  • What If Megalodon Sharks Didn't Go Extinct?
    NEW CHANNEL - Fortnite Central: bit.ly/2HeBjNR
    Hello and welcome back to Life’s Biggest Questions, I’m Ron McKenzie-Lefurgey. The Megalodon was an enormous aquatic carnivore from the Early Miocene era to the end of the Pliocene. It was a superpredator that preyed on everything from whales to turtles, using its powerful jaws to bite through just about anything in the sea. But what if these enormous beasts didn’t go extinct 2.6 million years ago, but remained to this day? Let’s explore. By the way, while this is in no way related if you happen to be a fan of Fortnite, the new game sweeping the world, head on over to Fortnite Central. It’s a new sister channel that talks about all things Fortnite. Now get ready, it’s time to ask the question: What if Megalodons Didn’t Go Extinct?

      Mynameismaya11 Well, they wouldn't be around the parts we swim in. Megalodons would most likely be in the midnight zone in the ocean, which we haven't discovered 90% of the ocean yet.

      @MrRedforman1 Před 6 lety +2

      Everything near the surface has been discovered. There's just a lot of depths that haven't been discovered yet, but the Megalodon wouldn't be able to survive in the deepest part of the ocean. They would die and are all dead.

      @phillipmarsh1197 Před 5 lety +107

      Dominican41 Your point? As mentioned in the video, the entire ecosystem would have to be different to support populations of such large predators. Then, as mentioned by others, they lived in shallow regions of the tropics. Then there’s their teeth. Shark teeth fall out very frequently, which is shy modern shark teeth are fairly easy to find. Yet we rarely find Megalodon teeth and when we do they’re fossilized. I’ve heard arguments that they might have just moved deep into the ocean or perhaps under the ice caps, but that’s still not reasonable. Again, they lived in warm waters and water only gets colder the deeper you go and the closer you get to the poles. Plus, there is no way they found a sustainable food source in either of those locations. If you believe in evolution they you may say they just formed adaptations to live there, but I’d argue that such drastic changes would have to have been made that they could no longer be considered the same species. If you don’t believe in evolution, then they’re still dead on the premise of not being adapted for the different climates.
      I’m sure we have yet to discover many undersea giants, not the megalodon.

      Nope. What we haven't explored to that extent is the deep sea, the body of a meg wouldn't be able to withstand the pressure. There's only so much physics allow, a giant shark being able to survive the pressure while relying on keeping on moving in order to be able to breath, while also having to hunt huge amounts of food isn't one of the things physics and the deep sea allow.

      Large ocean predators, whether they're whales or sharks, would have to be close to abundant food sources. The depths of the oceans and open oceans, just don't provide this. They'd have to be close to shorelines, reefs, continental shelves, or at the colder poles, where there are large amounts of krill and fish.
      If they existed...we'd would have seen them by now.

      If Megalodon hadn't gone extint, humanity probably would, because we would havê no chance of confronting him in early days, and he would have stole all the sea food, if the bioma didn't adapted drastically (like, for example, animals becoming more nutricious, reducing the amount of hunt necessary to feed the megalodon, or reproduce faster, to compensate for the hunger of this predador), straight up eat all that got in the sea or, even if we didn't ever leave land, it would have great problems, because it could happen that some evolutionally lines that we know today got messed up, like new animals beying forced to go on land, because of the lack of food or to escape the predador, and so probably more danger for the early us. Or at least we wouldn't havê discovered the ocean so quickly, which affects a great deal of our history as specie. It may not seem at first, but the only reason we evolve this much is because, for odds of the destiny, great predadores, like dinossaurs and this shark, got extint. The dinassous is just direct: if they didn't got extict, our ancestor at the time (which was the similar to a mouse) would have never evolved enough, because, to survive the multiple dinassours and other animals that hunt him, he needed to be that small, beying able, just to refer one advantaged, to hide in every little hole. Large animals like us, would never survive there (easy spooted, difficult to hide, more nutritious and easy to grab), so the "mouse" only started evolving to large mammals until reaching us, after all this predators vanished.

    The Megalodon’s only *POSSIBLE* location it could live in is in the Deep Marina Trench. If it came up it wouldn’t have enough food and the water pressure could kill it. So, if it was alive, odds are it lives on the Deep Marina Trench, and won’t come up.

      KillerWolf25 even with that, we can track blue whales and know their migration patterns. Why can't we do that for Megalodon? Maybe not by 1700 but if we wanted animals that big to be extinct we could do it. There are about 10000 blue whales ( lowest reported numbers) we wouldn't need to kill all of them to force them to extinction, we could just kill them down to a tiny population then let the inability for them to find mates kill them off, after 100 or so years that species would likely be extinct ( like the current situation for wild tigers and wild snow leopards)

    • @Feja2503
      @Feja2503 Před 6 lety +46

      Because of science. Also the 5% thing is misleading. It depends on your definition of explored. only 5% of the ocean hasnt been mapped. The only thing we dont have is ; have everything mapped in a high quality and seen everything with our own eyes. Which basically comes down to; we can see every big thing down there. Just not have the detail to see a crab. A megalodon however would be big enough to see.

      Okay, here's a story:
      So, one day, my family and I were staying in a hotel, and decided it would be fun to go swim in the pool. Now, I was about 8 at this time, and I could swim pretty fast. I had been on a swim team for about 4 years, and was good at it. I was comfortable in the water. My sister and I got ready, and walked to the pool, or at least we tried. We knew there was a pool, as it said so on the hotel's website. We couldn't find any signs showing us where the pool would be. So, we asked the front desk. They gave us directions, and we started walking. It was a very long walk, and led us to an empty pool behind the building. It was in a strange place. My sister and I grabbed our goggles, and walked over to the steps that led into the pool, and I saw that the water was quite mercy. My sister carelessly walked in, and began swimming around. I on the other hand was terrified. If I couldn't see what was in that water, I wasn't going in. My parents, while understanding, got kind of mad because they didn't want to just have me sit there all sad that I didn't want to go in the pool, but still wanted to swim. So, when they finally convinced me, I reluctantly crept into the water, and started walking towards my sister. I walked a few feet, before the ground of the pool that I was walking on, dropped off. Given, there was no warning sign, or even indicator of the depth of the pool. I got scared, and fell down, but then swam back up, realizing that it just got deeper. My sister laughed from the other side of the pool. I didn't wanna go under the water completely, because I could still not see, and was TERRIFIED. So, I kind of floated over to my sister, who was laughing at me and swimming away. When she got to the other side of the pool. I felt something grab my foot. I got scared and kicked at it, and it let go. I swam away to the wall and hopped out of the pool scared. I know this doesn't really have to do with megalodons, but I was still scared. I stayed out of the pool, and waited until my sister was done swimming.

    Who said they went extinct?
    In the Mariana Trench a expedition probe was sent down from a boat and was eventually cut off signal. The team eventually pulled the probe out of the water. The probe was very damaged, but lodged into the probe was a tooth that is similar to a Megalodon Shark. *how to game theory amirate fellas*

    They've just explored 5% of the oceans and found some fossils and have come to the conclusion that it went extinct. They didn't consider that 95% of the remaining ocean may still contain them.
