There are not enough words to define Joe Zawinul. No doubt he was a genius, but this is still an understatement. He was bigger and will be dearly missed. Thank you Joe, for your magic music and extraordinary creativity. I can say I was fortunate to see you in a live experience, which I will never forget.
Without fail, listening to Joe's music I always get the greatest feeling that's he was so successful in celebrating the greatness of the human spirit. A world class improviser, composer, arranger, and band leader, you are sorely missed Mr. Zawinul. God bless.
I remember seeing this on my little over air TV on PBS at college in 99. I knew Joe from Weather Report but this blew me away. This band was incredible. Long before youtube, this wasn't easy to find. Glad it is here for all to see.
Either of the first two tracks for my national anthem please... more stage diving ...and you know you could never have a bad night out with Badrena. Legends the lot of them. Thanks for posting.

What an incredible unit these guys were. 45:0646:5147:5659:05 Victor - 47:06 59:16 (how quickly he changes course with Zawinul at the first note Joe played)
One of the few keyboard genius's of our time. Saw him live twice, was a gift to hear and see him. Once with Weather Report, then The Afro Fusion group. He was brilliant.
One of the four keyboard geniuses spawned by Miles Davis’ group of the late 60s - but the only one to entirely focus on electronic instruments later on.
Herbie, Keith, Chic and Joe. That is an amazing roster of keybaord players as it is.The four pillars of modern jazz keybaords. Then you remember earlier he had Bill Evens, Red Garland, etc. His sidemen were all giants and that's just keys. Too bad Keith Jarrett swore off electric instruments entirely other than his brief tenure with miles. It would have been cool to hear him in a Rhodes or something. I especially love hearing tasty synth solos in jazz. Joe was the best, or Herbie
For me Joe is the one whose work with electric instruments endures. His very organic approach to electronics still sounds as fresh as when he made it back in the day. Herbie and Chick's synthesizer work pale in comparison. They were/are brilliant on acoustic instruments (saw them at Umbria Jazz in 2013 playing duets mercifully without synthesizers, and they were brilliant) while Keith had the good sense to leave electronics alone for the most part.
@@djweetabix1079 Don't take it personally. I am only offering an opinion. I saw all these bands back in the day and, for me, Weather Report and Joe hold up the best in 2022. I wish I had seen the version of Return to Forever with Joe Farrell, Flora, Airto, Stanley and Lennie. That was quite a group and, for me, infinitely more interesting than the electric version which followed. In no small part because of Joe Farrell, a much more interesting improviser than Al DiMeola. But it's only my opinion. Cheers.
