    Wearable gimbal which can also turn into a hand-held solution - this is the shortest summary about the W2GX by Feiyu-Tech. Let’s find out how good it actually is!
    Starting with the unboxing process - it has major importance here, because shows how well the device is packed and also - that the box is supposed to be used as a carrying case; Inside you have enough space to. With its universal ¼ inch thread mounting hole, it is easily worn with chest harnesses, shoulder straps and helmet mounts. It can also be attached to desktop tripods, selfie sticks and handlebars.
    The WG2X is a successor to the WG2, and a big difference is the angled arm, which with the new model is different.
    It is a three-axis stabilizer, and here we have the first quite remarkable feature - the panning and tilting motors are supporting unrestricted 360 degree range of motion - which beats most of the competition not only on the wearable gimbal market.
    As for build quality - the WG2X has an aluminum and ABS construction that makes it 27grams (almost one ounce) lighter than the predecessor.
    Mounting of an action camera is particularly easy - the mechanism allows tightening the camera and prevents it from falling down. It is a very reliable mechanism and is well aligned to the more dynamic nature of the gimbal. The operation modes are three - here’s the pan follow mode - the horizon and vertical levels are locked and the only axis followed is the panning - which will result into left and right movements.
    The second kind of mode is the so called following mode. And - the third mode - all locked - maintains the selected direction.
    The gimbal can easily turn into a hand-held stabilizer - with the huge disadvantage that it lacks a control wheel or joystick. But, the Feiyu tech team has found a great solution to compensate for this as well. Manually set the desired position, keep the camera in position for half a second - and - it will maintain the setting.
    On the software side - smartphone app is the Feiyu ON - it looks a little outdated. But despite these shortcomings - it is okay; Perhaps the reason I liked this gimbal so much is that it has most of the features controllable without the app.
    Apart from my very positive impressions, here are some disadvantages to mention - charging port is still microUSB - in the year where Type C sees such a serious growth! And since GoPRo is a target - it makes sense to use the same connectors as the Hero series.
    Battery life is also limited - around 2.5 hours. This is not too bad, because the maximum shooting time with single battery cycle of a hero 7 black is around an hour and a half - but still - could have been slightly better. Oh, and it is just splash-proof, so likely a bad idea to be used under heavy rain.
    But if we scale all that - with great responsiveness, a lot of very useful and easy to access features and a few - ignorable disadvantages - with exception of being waterproof - this is one of the most affordable and most advanced wearable gimbals.

    1:35 instead of attaching a camera mount to the chesty, a better solution is to just drill a 1/4" hole into the chesty and attach the gimbal directly with a screw through the rear of the mount plate. If you're doing something like aggressive mountainbiking wear a chest protector underneath because that would be a nightmare to fall on!

    You should mount your cameras with the lens on the inside (closer to the center) because it will be moar balanced. The lens side is heavier.

  • @SkillipEvolver
    @SkillipEvolver Před 4 lety

    I have a tricky question for you.
    Wonder if you could help?
    I'm planning to use the WG2X + hero 8 feiyu mount (to use with hero8). However , I want to also use my PolarPro ND filters at the same time.
    The design for these is a shoulder design, like a corner piece of plastic which goes over the lens area. It adds probably 4/5mm around that top left corner of the Hero8 (if you're looking at if from the back screen).
    I can see that you can insert the Hero8 not *all the way* in the WG2X mount, so that the arm/clamp part which goes over the front of the camera could be positioned a bit more over the LCD screen (but still keep the camera secured). In this way, I could allow a bit more room on the lens area of the camera, to accommodate the PolarPro shoulder plastic.
    But my concern with this setup, is that although this could be fine for the horizontal nature of the feiyu mount, the polar pro plastic shoulde piece still adds some millimetres on the top side on the camera, which I am doubtful the Hero8 mount would allow.
    Essentially what I am trying to achieve is to be able to use a gimbal along with ND filters, wearable. But as far as I can tell, this scenario has not been thought out very much....

    • @TechMishka
      @TechMishka  Před 4 lety

      You are right and might not work well...As far as I remember the GoPro shown here is Hero 7; The Hero 8 is bigger and doesn't fir that gimbal.

    Has anyone tried this while skiing? It would be interesting to know how it performs in such a demanding terrain.
    ReelSteady for GoPro mentioned here is a little bit tricky, i am using the latest trial version and you cannot use videos shot lower than 1080p or 25fps. In addition, you have to disable stabilization (hypersmooth) so if you think of using it on videos already taken bear this in mind.
    from their website: "Supported Shooting Modes
    : All “Wide”, “4:3”, and “Superview” modes at a resolution of 1080p or larger, 25fps or more, with in-camera stabilization disabled.1080p or larger, 25fps or more, with in-camera stabilization disabled."
    If you keep this in mind, the stabilized video produced is really good.

      I've been using first version of this gimbal while skiing. Very stable, no problems at all. I'd like to have removable battery, beacuse if it's really cold, it runs out in less than an hour. Just ordered this 1, mostly because of weight.

    Also have does this suffer the same issue as the original WG where any lateral movement will trigger the gimbal to initiate a roll? example is if the original was mounted in a car, when you turn a corner the gimbal would initiate a rolling motion on the longitudinal axis.

      Lanny, that's actually a great question! Gimbals provide mechanical stabilization based on their gyro-sensor. But it adds weight and I don't think it will feel comfortable.
