      As a person who likes Indian food until it makes me cry, I always thought it was cool too. I grew up in an area of Chicago where it is all Indian - Devon and California, and I never sensed anything negative about it. I always hung out at my Indians friends houses and ask their parents about stuff like who's that elephant guy, what's his story, "oh, Gunpati", and the story is a good one, he could find the right head so put an elephant head on him. There are so many great stories like that, thousands. And I used to chew Pan in gradeschool with the tobacco in the wrap. I dipped pan until I was 30. I used to be able to walk around with the can of loose beetlenut too, the masala in the blue can with the little spoon. Then there was the hard core mix in the banana leaf you bought from any guy behind the counter. I seem to have bad relationships with Muslim Indians though, but love Pakistani people. I don't know why I wrote all this, caffeine I guess sorry. See ya.

      Nor did I. And it's not like it was super mean stereotyping or that it made "Ben" look of lesser value in any way. With anyone dropped into an unfamiliar culture, he was sort of naive, but lovable. Same could be said for an American dropped into Indian culture, too. I thought Stevens made a super lovable character with Ben. After Johnny in both movies, Ben was my next favorite. Later after the success of Better Call Saul, I liked what Michael McKean brought to the 2nd movie as...well...sort of a Jimmy McGill type character that comes to eventually befriend the robot. Could take his character as stereotyping East Coast people as all shady swindlers if we wanted yet nobody batted an eye at that one.

      As a guy from an Indian background myself I give full credit - the performance was great. I think the issue/hurt feelings come from the fact its always been hard to find roles in movies and tv when you're from our background (though this has really increased in the last decade or so). Plus a lot of the roles are stereotypes e.g taxi drivers or doctors so hearing a non-indian took that role means one of the limited number was taken away. I can't wait until the day more strong roles are given to Indian background actors - we may even end up having an American Indian version of Denzel in some badass roles! Still full credit the performance in Short Circuit was great.

      @@TheKhela89 To be fair, there probably wasn't a big pool of Indian actors to hire from in Los Angeles. Most were probably in Bollywood or London in the UK. By that point, who would have been hired in the 80's for the role, especially for a lower budget movie that put a lot of money towards the robot?

    To this day I honestly do not have a problem with Fisher Stevens playing the role he played in the movie. He brought such levity and spirit to a screenplay that I don't think Ally and Steven could have carried on their own. He brought a childlike atmosphere with a character that was so innocent and fun. I never thought the character stupid. I honestly thought he was kinda of a smart ass always cracking jokes. And the fact that he played the character as not having fully grasped the english language I thought was fine. I think we are getting a little to off putting about roles that were not meant to be mean, but were meant to have heart. Maybe Aziz was offended, and he says the term "black face" like it was racist, but no one is talking about Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder where he went full on black face, or roles played by an actor that are supposed to be from another country. Is it what acting is about. Fisher Stevens was PERFECT in the comedic timing of this character. I can't think of an actor back then that could have pulled it off.

      RDJ was supposed to be satire but what no one is willing to examine is since it wasn't like fisher stevens was a huge name..why NOT just hire an Indian actor? Since the character was so thoughtful and smart and funny why not give that OPPORTUNITY to shine to an actual indian actor?

    • @neosquirrel
      @neosquirrel Před 2 lety +7

      RDJ's character was deliberately ignorant of his skin color swap and the film itself blatantly calls it out--it's a reference to things like this when they cast other actors to play roles with different skin colors as an opportunity to be "bold" or "daring". Take for example the film "Soul Man", featuring the rising star actor C. Thomas Howell as a young white guy who takes tanning pills to darken his skin in order to acquire a scholarship into an African-American university.
      The movie was widely panned as blackface and in poor taste, and it brought down Howell's career entirely (he was relegated to b-movie status after the role).
      Fun fact: when RDJ's character says he won't drop character until after the DVD commentary, he meant it! RDJ stays in character throughout the DVD commentary and as promised, drops it at the end of the film.
      It wasn't designed to be edgy, it was meant to shine a light on the stupidity of Hollywood's film industry on taking good ideas and losing sight entirely of what they were trying to accomplish in the first place, and the A-listers of the industry were on-hand to make this film about it.

      @@nic-tv4090 Aziz made that clear. They offered Fisher the role but then told him they changed the character to Indian and if he could pull it off? Granted they hired Brosnon Pinchot but the dailies were not good according to the producer and director. My guess is Brosnon went way overboard with the role, whereas Fisher brought a human aspect and was more grounded. He did say in an interview he was more into method acting at the time. He didn't go into the role wanting to do a stereotype. He traveled to India and tried to pull together a voice and character, with a voice coach.
      The 80s were not like it is now. Globalism definitely has made it easier for international stars to make it big in Hollywood. In the 80s you didn't have a lot. The international stars usually came to Hollywood to make it big. Fisher was young, inexperienced and it was a different time back then. Even Aziz stated Would he do it today? No need. There are a LOT of Indian actors out there known and most likely able to fill that role.

    • @nic-tv4090
      @nic-tv4090 Před rokem

      @@chrisklecker but look at what your saying..it doesn't make any sense. The reason they were AGAINST hiring an actual Indian actor is Indian actors don't have a name anyone recognizes.... then they hire a white actor who doesn't have a household name to play the character. So clearly getting a hot young celebrity in the mid 80s wasn't that much of a criteria. Ultimately that decision was rooted in ethnic/racial exclusion in any case. For all of fisher stevens good intentions he BENIEFITTED from racial exclusion because he got a job that helped him make a career. You guys are the probably the same people who rail against affirmative action, all the while ignoring and doing mental gymnastics to excuse or downplay the VERY REAL affirmative action type instances (and there are MANY) that have benefited white people in this country since the beginning. An unknown NOT household name Fisher Stevens got to have the type of job and more importantly OPPORTUNITY that an actual Indian American actor (and there were some in the US at that time) didn't get. And you all are okay with it.
