Some clarifications on this method that didn't fit into the video:
- This method is was designed as an alternative to typical speedpainting methods, it's just another way to paint among many but it's a way that I've been painting lately that I find really satisfying.
- Are there faster methods? Yes... but that's missing the point. This is a sort of "Step Two" if you are bored of systems like Slapchop and want to spend maybe 45-70 mins on each figure rather than 30 mins.
- This method was designed around this idea that I have trouble focusing on one task for too long, and I have trouble finishing things, so I broke the tasks of miniature painting down into smaller and smaller steps with a very low barrier to entry to each, made it a lot more easier for my brain to make progress on things when approaching large armies for games like The Old World!
- Hope this insight is helpful :)
As my Grey Ziggurat of potential grows ever higher, I'm always looking for ways of reducing it's stature. Slapchop doesn't really do it for me, but this is a system of work thats not a million miles away from how I currently paint so I'm going to give it a shot on a few minis ASAP and see how it suits me. Cheers !
can i ask what the point of the washes are if you paint over them anyway? wouldn’t it just be a waste of paint?
@@miya1285 I'm not as good as dana, but im guessing it is to increase underlying contrast.
I commented 2 years ago that I was using your videos to start my black templar army... I've yet to paint a black templar but I'm sure as he'll going to use your videos to paint my crimson fists
Have you started them? 😅
@@SamFisk About to WMOLF them up right now. not super 100% on my colors yet but worst case i just reprime them!
Go for it. Painting's a really fun thing to do with your free time. I'm sure they'll look awesome!
This is the most miniatures hobbyist comment possible.
Please continue to get more unhinged and eerie with your edits. I find it really helps set your video style apart from the rest, as much as your vibrant saturated painting style. Thank you for the video as always!
Excited to see the return of SCRAMBLIN
I've accepted HowlCorp into my heart and already I have 10 skaven painted and no enemies. Anymore.
This is definitely a great table ready army. Reminds me of vintage toy paint jobs.
Thank you! That's exactly what I am always going for!!!!
I see new Dana Howl video... I drop my brushes and get locked in! Every newbie painter should watch this one.
Not sure what all these other comments are, but I very much appreciated this specifically only for me video!
always appreciate getting to see the HOWLCORP vibe return, thanks for the vid, CEO.
What intrigues me about the "wash first, then layer" is that it ensures, even if you miss spots, the model will still have tons of color. Rather than just being the base prime, that will stand out like a beacon. It will instead be whatever the wash color was. Between that and the later glazing step, it is very accommodating to a sloppy, painterly style. (Or for painters who haven't yet developed good brush control).
I feel SO SPECIAL now. Personalized service. Well done! I like this system of yours. Having new things to try out keeps painting fresh.
Hey, it was for me! But I’m happy to share
What a kind and healthy community@@03dashk64
We appreciate your dedication to innovations in the field of acronym science.
Satirical painting guides are the best painting guides.
This is great advice. I've been painting for years and never really gotten past painting by numbers and adding a wash. And every time I try to improve my skills I get overwhelmed by the amount of techniques available. This seems doable for me. Thanks Dana for making this video specifically for me.
Back when I wasnt nearly as experienced a painter as now, i used something similar to this to paint a squad of Pink Horrors for a GW store 100 minute competition. White prime, metal jewelry, red wash for the pink and i had 10 models for about 10 minutes per model! It really does work
dang, that's some inspired scramblin!!
Thanks Brent :)
Those Empire guys are packin' some serious weaponry.
I like this method for larger armies like you say. I can't help but chuckle every time you say "Squaaaarrrrreeeeee Spaaaaaaacce"
Really appreciate the advice on turning speed paints into washes. That’s a new idea and I love it. I’m going to try the shadowing now thanks.
Worthwhile IMO to keep in mind that there is no better or best in miniature painting, just aesthetic choices :) there is a hyper focus on smooth gradients and detail in the hobby but thats just one visual aesthetic among many we can create.
Stock footage for that real Omega Mart vibe. Bravo, Howlcorp.
Been having a rough week, this is just what I needed going into the weekend!
love to hear it!
I love watching painting videos from positive people like you and Brent, you guys make the process of painting for someone like me who has some barriers to being a supreme painter (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) easy enough to get very decent results.
Thanks for making this video for me. Incredible how you knew exactly all my problems without ever meeting each other.
Wow! Love this video. Thank you so much. My painting has already improved so much thanks to this video. I kept putting off painting my "Mighty Nein" mini's until I got "good enough" but after watching this video I took the plunge and painted them, and they look great. Thank you!
Finally got around to following this guide, up until now I’ve just been slathering paint on without really knowing what I’m doing. I’m at O with a minotaur friend and if I stopped here it would already be better looking than anything I’ve painted to date.
The use of Fluorescents to add vibrancy to colors is an excellent technique, and it gives me a better appreciation of those paints. Thank you for putting this tutorial together!
It's wolfchoppin' time!
yesssss its HowlCorp and a painting tutorial! Love it!
Nice one. As you know that I'm a procrastinator, WMOLF is ideal for me as everything magically comes together so brilliantly in the end. I especially like that fluorescent colour glaze.
Painting metals first is such a great tip. I hate painting metallics and getting them out of the way instantly makes picking up the model to paint more appealing. The additional note of getting a base layer/shade layer down with speed paints so you can get on to the fun highlighting is great.
Anything to make it more exciting to pick up a brush and a model IMO is revolutionary!!
Really nice approach and opens the door to some arty experimentation.😊
It's nice to find out you love and cherish me over all other viewers. I always had a feeling I was everyone's favourite, and this only confirms my suspicions! Great video!
Please understand that I mean this in the most positive way possible, but at each intermediate stage I thought it looked awful... then at the end it looked amazing, beautiful. I'm not quite sure how you managed that.
I feel like a lot of my painting methods are like that lol
I adore the presentation of this video. 😁
this looks like a lot of fun.. i'll be trying it!
This vid was for me?! Thank you! 🤓
this is lovely
I'm do glad that I happened upon you channel in the secret grotto.
Could you show the coverage of the new flourescents over white in a future video?
really cool painted minis. Thanks for sharing. I'm happy to learn this style and methodology.
This video was made just for me!
Your approach to painting always helps take the stress out of starting, thanks for another great video!
I might try this on my next bulk unit paint up.
What appeals to me is many other speed technique have a very opaque base colour with contrast paint over shade and I don't actually enjoy that aesthetic as much as traditional painting techniques.
Very interesting approach to speedpaint, specially the "metallic first" idea. Your fluorecent painting style is as refreshing as always.
Why are all these other people watching the video Ms. Dana made for me? I will try it. We shall see.
Love the personal content, thanks Dana. Always knew I was your favourite
Wow, you do good work. 👍👍
Thank you!
Scrambling is the way, it definitely became a stable part of my process!
Thanks Dana, I really want to try this!
this is the greatest intro of all time
Very fun and interesting technique. I think I'm going to give it a try for my first serious attempt at batch painting. Thanks!
Thank you for this video. And thank you for the laughs too😊
Thank you for making this video for me
I like it. It requires thinking about the shadows in advance which might be a bit unintuitive for some, but otoh that's a fun challenge.
works great for larger armies!
Interesting. The effects are great
That shading reference doc is bonkers! Nice!
Wow, I can't believe Dana made a video just for me!
This is a great video. I think this style fits my enjoyment better than slapchop. Definitely gave me something to try! Subscribed 😁
Oh wow, I didn't expect a video just for me, but it's much appreciated!
Love seeing a new take. I've been painting some Empire dudes with a lot of yellow cloth and a pink/magenta base with ivory zenithal has been working out well for me.
I have contemplated this type of painting method at least with shadows first then adding paint. The metallic first make it very interesting.
I can't believe Dana Howl made this video just for me.
Wow. The ‘ugly phase’ of this technique lasted for about 95% of painting time but boy did it come together in the end - great job - consider this skeptical viewer convinced
Me: _W.M.O.L.F - yeah, I'm never gonna remember that._
*My intrusive thoughts:* _Wolf Mom Method_
Yup , I'm for sure going to accidentally refer to it like that, probably while in public with a bunch of my fellow Grognards.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Howl Corp *shows burning collapsed building* - thats my kinda humor
This method seems perfectly suited to the grimdark style in many Warhammer interpretations. I have struggled in the past getting things dingy enough, but this seems like it goes HARD to dingy and then it's my responsibility to bring it back in the high areas to an acceptable level. I'm going to test this out on one of my models. I'm curious now...
Cool 🏰
Love this!! I’ve been having a hard time finding a decent white primer for brush-priming. Can you share what you used here?
Looks more like good old nethergunking to me, even if you put your own spin on it.
I love the Howling Griffons (Space Marine) chapter colours applied to the minis (or are the Howling Griffons very far descendants from these soldiers?) Thanks for making a fun video, Dana!
This is really similar to my older style of painting fantasy and more organic models (as opposed to hard-edged sci-fi armor). I start with a white or very bright prime, and then use a neutral brown wash (the old Secret Weapon Baby Poop made by Les Burley's recipes if you wanna DIY these days) to define shading and help my poor old eyes to see the model, and then bring up the colors from there with a few passes of thinned down paint and one highlight layer for rank-and-file minis (more for hero and centerpiece models). If I want a cooler tone, I've played around with a blue or green oriented wash instead, but I hadn't gone really far with that. It's served me well for a really long time.
What modifications might you suggest for a model with a lot of black. I have been hesitant to paint my Lion El'jonson
For the overshading, how watered down do you like it? If you are going over it with regular acrylics anyway, does it matter if its not watered down much
What brush on primer do you use? I have been using the Vallejo white "primers"" bottle but seems a bit thin as the primer is actually going into the crevices rather than on the surface part of the model?
Hi There! I'm a little new to painting, are contrasts much different to regular acryllic paints? Could I use regular acrylluc paints for the wash step? Thank you :)
What brand of prime is used in the video? I personally have issues getting the surface look white enough
i hve to recommend this method to my brother, its speedy, messy, colourful... might be exactly his thing
Scrambling the death bringer
What is the miniature on the round base you painted?
He's kitbashed from a few other minis! The body is from a Warcry Fire Cultist guy, and the other parts are from some of the new Cities of Sigmar range!
Another color to wash instead of just a darker shade of the base color, so cool! Your finished minis dont look painted, they look like they are painted and sitting in light filled space.
: )
Good work flow
Saphire?!
Howlcorp gets me, i too enjoy human activities while painting!
👍👍👍
Interesting video, really hate those models 8^)
So, are you painting an Empire army for the Old World now?
insert beloved human activity: listening to star trek lo fi on repeat
Is this realy faster?
I love your use of colors. Beautiful.
inside you there are two WMOLFs:
Why are all these people commenting on my video?
I still think that "squarespace" could be longer
Just for ME?! 😊👍👍👍
That rifleman’s package looks a bit …odd? I can hear him complaining of a medieval camel toe. I think that each half of ‘the codpiece’ in that style of legging usually picks up the colour of the opposing leg. Looking at the OG Romeo & Juliet movie as a reference.
Love the tips-will definitely try out the new process. Thanks D!
I’ve got a metric ton of Reaper Bones minis from their Kickstarters. I’m 100% going to use this method to try to get through some of that backlog.
Adding red glace to yellow really triggers me. Yellow fabrics dyed with birch, don't have a red shimmer
It's meeeee! I'm the special corp boi! Not you! Close the video right now (after liking and subscribing of course)
I am so very jealous of your painting skills but in this case, not so enamoured of your colour palette. Especially that last bit where you washed that brown over the figure obliterating the previous colours. But that is the beauty of artwork. You do so very well and not everyone will like the result but that is not your care. Rock on.
Wait, it is not revolutionary? I learned to paint by following the lies of instructions on official mini paint boxes and lemme tell you, some companies should be sued. Thank you Dana even if you put this tutorial as satire.
I just meant the way I presented it at the beginning was a bit of a joke, the actual method I fully believe in!
