  • We start working on the 1958 Morris Minor 1000, first looking at how the vin # tells us it's a different year car than it is titled / registered as. We then get into why it wasn't running very well including a closer look at the carbs and choke mechanism and an interesting issue with the spark plugs and wires. A short test drive proves we’re on the right track to get this car back on the road to its owner.

This video is so helpful ! My running symptoms are just as you described. I had to come home yesterday after a short run ( a couple of miles ) as I seemed to have only 3 cylinders. Also the choke mechanism isn't working properly.
Thanks a lot, I'm off to follow your guide this morning. Colin UK 🇬🇧

Expect number three cylinder to have a crack through one if the valve seats, and number 3 cylinder to be worn and burning oil. Both from design flaws in the block and head. They even made a special piston for #3, with an extra oil ring in the piston skirt.

ya, my '52 TD, as it was advertised by the previous owner, was actually one of the last hundred made in the spring of '53. apparently, he had found evidence in the documentation provided to him from the previous owner before him that the car was a '52 and never really questioned it.
of course, it doesn't really matter one way or the other...
BTW, was wondering if that's one of the same engines that was found in the transverse mounted front-wheel drive Minis.
just curious as BITD (early 70s), i hung around, much to their annoyance most likely, a britsh car service shop in columbus, OH. it was on N. High street between Hudson and Dodridge and owned by a short-tempered red-headed guy by the name of Eric Jones (d. 2008), where he and his wheel-chair bound partner rallied Minis. i was fascinated with its front-wheel-drive, transverse mounted engine-over-transmission design, having never seen such a thing before.

It really only matters with purchasing replacement parts on a model that had continuous updates throughout it’s production run to insure your getting the right parts. To some it really matters for correctness, to others not so much

What, no closing summary, that’s it? 😤

Those chassis “repairs” would condemn this vehicle to the scrap yard in the UK. I wouldn’t even drive it there either, I would have it trailered and be grateful that it hadn’t killed me already. What a wreck it is. I’ve never seen anything so badly repaired in my life.

The owner is planning on replacing the rails with new ones
