My grandad told me the same thing about the toilet paper Mandy. He was a soldier in WW2. He specifically said you pull the sheet off your finger to clean your finger and then use the middle bit you tore out to clean your fingernail. And yes, I'd always suspected it was a joke that soldiers told the new recruits. 😅
Even though you are coming to the end of the show, there are 100s of hours of audio of the 3 of them talking. All 3 series is just a small amount of the stuff they have done edited together. There is so much more for you to enjoy 😊

@@MandyCaneLane there are compilations of the xfm shows and podcasts available on youtube, monkey news, rockbusters, white van karl etc. i don't know if you'd do reactions to some of them since there's no video, but people have and still got tens of thousands of views. rockbusters might be the funniest thing they did, if you're into music it would be fun to see if you can get any answers to karl's cryptic clues. "karl vs steve - all the insults" is also hilarious, it's mostly karl absolutely destroying steve
A bed without a mattress is a bed frame or divan. If it's sold as a bed, it should include a mattress. Check what's included before buying.
In the UK, sofas & armchairs used to often be highly flammable until laws were brought in to require them to not be.
I'd be surprised as hell if that wasn't also true in the US.

In 1975 the first laws were implemented to use flame retardant materials. But then...laws had to be made to NOT use flame retardant materials, cause they were toxic. Things got a little confusing for people buying baby stuff, as people were saying both "Don't use hand me downs! Make sure it's flame retardant!" and also "Make sure it DOESN'T say flame retardant!"
Plus, everything still had a flame retardant on it, just a new version, but people got it in their heads that it was all flame retardants!
A rubber dinghy would be comfortable, like an airbed.

The reason the episode is called "Earth" is because all the clips are taken from "The Ricky Gervais Guide to: The Earth" audiobook... one of my Ricky Gervais "guide'' audiobooks I listened to on repeat back in 2011. In fact I believe most of Season 3 of the Ricky Gervais Show are like that, the episodes are named after the Ricky Gervais Guide audiobooks where they took the clips from.

i gotta admit she knows what shes doing longing it out over months for the youtube engagement algorithm, but i worry for her views after its done, alot of these comedy reactors fal off a cliff after theyve finished both idiot abroad and gervais show and dont understand why they getting claimed on every new show they try and react to, not knowing that from day1 ricky put a clause in contracts that put no restriction on 3rd parties uploading to youtube, lol he did that all in the aim to get karl as famous as possible so even 15yrs later people still shout "head like a fucking orange" every day karl walks in the street.

Ricky's "It couldn't support life full stop." is a trap scientists can fall into. For the knowledge we have at the moment, maybe he's right. But that's assuming we know everything (which we should not). For example, it was only the last couple of decades that we found out just how resilient tardigrades are, it's entirely possible that there are a whole bunch of lifeforms over on Pluto that we've never experienced or even comprehended.
The "tip" in the UK and Ireland = the dump as you guys might say. Or officially here it's called the "civic amenity site" - the place where you can properly dispose of and recycle various types of large goods and waste, which is paid for by the taxpayer.
ive heard that 2 fingers and 1 sheet of loo roll thing too, cant remember where, i think like most of karls stories he'll vaguely remember something and just fill in the gaps he doesnt remember by making stuff up.

He's got a point about the bags. I mean that money isn't going to saving turtles is it? It's law here so I guess the government get money as tax for environmental projects, but they only sell the big bags for life now. I just buy one every time, I refuse to reuse them, I use them as bin bags. If they end up in the sea, that's the mismanagement of landfill and refuse collection.

Part of the idea was if there was a charge for bags then people would bring their own instead of paying for them and fewer bags would need to be made in the first place. It inconveniences the impromptu shopper but even someone as disorganised as me can usually remember my own bags if I know I’m going shopping. Usually.

I've also heard the toilet paper thing, it was a joke , to try get people to try it i assume 😅 but i can understand if you was short of paper in the army in a jungle, as grim as it is, itd be better to use your hand and use the paper to clean your hand as itd take less to do

I love Karl gets Mixed up between Donating and item and using a Charity to just get rid of older stuff he doesn't want any more but isn't willing to pay for to get taken away. Lol!

Tip = rubbish dump. Tipping your rubbish at the designated rubbish area as opposed to "fly tipping" they mentioned, chucking it anywhere
What is so entertaining about this show for me is that there is a sort of Laurel and Hardy dynamic between them. Ricky and Stephen are Oliver Hardy whereas Karl is Stan Laurel. It's generally implied that Stan Laurel is the clueless fool but in truth Oliver Hardy is the biggest fool (often due to his assumption that he is always right).
The 5 cents helps stop excessive use and the use of reuseable bags, of course.

I think a mattress is classed as soft furnishings but I’m not sure, my brain is full of toilet paper talk now. 😅
BTW, I think the idea regarding charging for carrier bags is to dissuade shoppers from just chucking bags away. (That was a boring comment weren't it?) Now instead of the seas and rivers being full of carriers you have to wade through them at home. If you have a carrier bag drawer at home you may be doing the right thing as some conspiracy theorists believe that when the financial systems collapse carrier bags will be used as legal tender. (Phew, I think I saved the comment.)
The toilet paper thing is genuine, as a ex soldier I can testify, the piece that you tear off to make the hole is actually to clean under the finger nail if needed..

I think a few videos ago I mentioned there are silly laws out there. Only allowed to move on Saturday mornings is one of those silly laws. Also, sounds like Ricky would say a chair is not furniture unless it's with a table. Cause that was his logic with a mattress. Well, it's not with the other stuff, so it's not a bed, and therefore not furniture. But it's part of the bed, Ricky! Just like a chair is part of a table set. Like a dining room table.
The only Alf I know is the show. Good show.

I wonder who comes up with some rules, cause some of these rules, like the five pence for a bag, seem to be world wide. Where I am, they also started charging for bags. Except, anti-plastic, not anti-paper. The paper disappeared long ago, suddenly, but had sort of a come back lately. We, here, have been saying it's the plastic that's been ruining the earth, killing fish, etc.
Looks like the toilets in Egypt are the same as in Japan and that part of the world. Your face on that part was funny. I need my seat. You're already focused on trying to get it out, and some of us already have more trouble doing that than others, but then you have to focus on trying not to fall over while squatting, too? Give me a seat! Let me push in peace and relax. Like Karl said. Where's my "enjoy the go" with or without Charmin? The squatting would distract me from doing my business. It adds to the trouble trying to balance. Just think of an old person using the squatter. They have to sit down, anyway. Also, if I had to pay to use the restroom, they would lose money. I'll find another place to use it. Even in an emergency.
Others sometimes give comments in a similar idea as mine, but I think I'm the one who mainly gives a bunch of commentary on bits throughout the entirety of each episode regularly, and I hope it's entertaining.

The toilet paper bit, might have some basis in reality, not the way he described it though. But yeah if you're in the jungle etc, they'd definitely discourage you from improvising with leaves, since there's every chance they could be poisonous, and there are a lot of blood vessels very close to the surface in that general area. So toilet paper conservation would be a thing. And yes you want a clean behind to help prevent tracking methods such as dogs.
Actually to avoid this issue, snipers in the British army, who may have to remain in the same place for a few days to get a brief window of opportunity on a target, I believe have a specific ration pack that is quite binding, so they don't need to defecate, or to reduce the likelihood, during that time. Basically the opposite of laxatives.

Oh, the semantics of Furniture, you're adorable! I am 46 and have never bought a bed, I am at that age where I need to get one because I've been using used mattresses given to me since my teens. Time to buy a bed. Lol, so he sent Karl to my dad!! My dad had 5 broken VCRs in a stack with a brand new one on top making #6, when I asked why he still had the 5 broken ones he said he intended to fix them. Needless to say I had to get rid of 5 broken VCRs when he died.
But do you consider a bed furniture? 🤔

I've had that issue buying a bed in the past to be honest. I didn't have a bed, it was shown with a mattress, it was advertised with a mattress, didn't specify it doesn't come with a mattress, and the cost of it, I assumed it would have a cheap crappy mattress with it.
I never knew about this separate bed and frame issue until the first time I saw this podcast! I empathise with Karl; it is a surprise for a customer to discover that they get only the frame. On the few occasions that I bought a bed (one of them was around the time this podcast was recorded), both bed and frame arrived. The beds were bought from a well-known department store. Ricky making a big issue out of Karl's shock is Ricky being contrary again - a mixed blessing.
@@sudeshkrishnan4564 Well it was still better than sleeping in the bathtub, once I got a couple of duvets down until I could get a mattress. Mainly because that bathtub sloped at both ends and I'm quite tall, and I have 2 fairly large dogs who insisted on sleeping on top of me in the bathtub :)
Minor point, but oxygen is a consequence of life, not a precursor. It would disappear from the atmosphere pretty quickly, except it’s emitted constantly by the plants and algae around the world.

The difference is, I say that without the slightest hint of sarcasm. On the subject of mattresses ... can I just say I'm with Karl on this? (Again, you say?) Yes! Mandy, no need for the "sorry." Because Karl really had this episode in the bag.

How do they stop you moving on a different day. Would they call the cops if they saw you moving on a Tuesday. Can't be enforceable. Or the seller keeps the keys until you've moved in. Seems a breakable rule.
Shouldn't pay for carry bags. Different if you buy one single item like milk. They complain about carry bags they want to think about packaging everything you buy is in plastic
There is alot of Karl left out there on the internet, we just need to find it, not sure what hes up to now, but i remember he had a podcast during the pandemic and lots of Ricky Gervais show still to go, you'll be missing out on alot if you dont check out the un-animated stuff like the "do we need em?" series, might not translate to a video reaction video though alot is just audio, etc...
I've listened to these podcasts for years...I've never understood Ricky's view that a mattress isn't an item of furniture...
What I don't understand is why they don't just make the bags out of something biodegradable, so that they're not harmful to the environment. There's no way a few pence is gonna be enough to deter people from littering with them.

Never come across them with raisins in and I grew up not far from where Karl did - presumably a regional variation?
Ricky was wrong too. In the beginning before the big bang, there was no space, so the point which banged, couldn't float anything like space we know. We don't know how it started, but the big bang created the space.
Just incase you didn’t get it fly tipping is throwing your rubbish away in non designated places I.e. the tip. Pretty sure you worked that out though lol

I think Ricky is over-excited in this episode, and that stifles Karl a bit.
The toilet paper survival technique is one of the many preposterous traps adults put in place to test the naivety and gullibility of adolescents, such as sending them off for sky hooks, or to go ask for a 'long weight'. I'm sure there are hundreds but I probably fell for them all and still use them as common knowledge.
Luckily the TV show QI rectifies a lot of ignorance, debunks old wives tales and things some bloke told someone in a pub.

Karl’s right on the bags. You can’t frame it as a moral thing and then just charge a fee. If it’s wrong then ban them. Otherwise it’s just another excuse to get money.
Originally they were made to give the 5p to a govt. scheme which passed it on to environmental charities. Now it is 10p I believe, but supermarkets are charging 30-40p for a bag and pocketing the rest of the money. It's an absolute racket.
