      This 830 along with one of the ones that we've had since the early 70's has a creeper first gear in it. A guy should try and weigh one of those 830's up to like 30000 pounds and the thing still wouldn't power out I wager in 1st gear... When I'm pulling on our 830, I pull the throttle stop pin out and idle it way down to ultra low RPM, if I had to guess 400 RPM or less... I still spin the thing out at that low of an RPM. I grew up farming on one, and I love the sound of them!

      @@RJ1999x Don't forget with a short-chain the rear wheels will take on a part of the load's weight when pulling. There are a lot of variables like the friction coefficient between the load and surface.
      Your statement is too absolute and easy to show as false. Any tractor can pull a load that exceeds the weight of said tractor if the load is on wheels (lower friction).

      @@BigCroca His 720 Diesel gives him fits. He worked for Deere and saw the corporate Monster they were becoming 25 years or so ago. I can agree with that. He claims that John Deere sent a ringer in on the 720/730 Diesel for the Nebraska tractor test. Well no one's been able to prove that and I never heard of anyone trying. And besides if they could achieve that on that tractor anyone else could too. He's even tried to tell me on here in another post that a d-17 went around at 830 with the same size of a plow. I don't think so. Where I am from the Allis Chalmers are usually taking the backseat to the old 2 Cylinder Diesels. They are slower than the Allis tractors but they still pull more. I know for a fact that the Nebraska tractor test say that a d-17 has more drawbar pull than a 730. Why then in the same field will a d-17 not pull a 5 14 trailer plow but the 730 will. He says because it's not hooked up to the snap coupler hitch. Well sorry that's just not the reality in Northwest Missouri. And if the fuel economy wasn't the truth then why didn't other tractor manufacturers especially Allis jump on the advertising bandwagon to make it what it really was. But they didn't, no one did. Nebraska test Engineers were not one to take a payment under the table or let someone pull the wool over their eyes, after all that is why they were formed and why they perform such tests. He dised the 5020 and 6030 simply because he says they have no power. Why then could they put a Detroit in them with much more horsepower and have zero drivetrain issues. They built those tractors heavy and to take abuse and the Power. Never mind that today inroads have been made to get some big horsepower out of diesel engines anymore. But back in the middle 70s the 6030 was the king, the top of the class. There were some who tried to best it but no one could or did. Allis Chalmers had a horrible cab you couldn't see out of in my opinion. Most 7080s had a hole in the side of the block where they were turned up too far trying to get more out of it and they came apart. 6030s came from the factory rated at 175 PTO horsepower although most were turning well over 200 some even as far as 245. Deere really didn't like them turning that much but left them alone in most cases. My experience with one is such that we had to screw the tire beads to the rim of the wheels because they were spinning on the wheels and shearing the valve stem off the tube. All four tires were full of fluid and they had hung all the cast iron on the back of it that they dared. 6030s were an incredible tractor at that time. They weren't the most comfortable they weren't the quietest and they weren't the most feature filled tractor out there. But really did they need to be to get the work done they could?

      @@RJ1999x Apologies if your comment was just humor, but it is a fact that Nebraska Tractor Test 632 (October 1957) recorded HP-hour per gallon figure of 18.03 for the John Deere 820/830. Don't know what other tractors did, but the figure of 16-18 HP-hours per gallon is fact, not "myth".

    • @BigCroca
      @BigCroca Před 6 lety +3

      Rj why are you being so contrary and cynical? Just because you do not find a particular thing interesting or find that it exceeds your expectations- or in other words impresses you- does not mean others are prohibited from having such feelings. If A.M. WYO finds it cool you are in no position to criticize or deny him of that. Yes 1st gear has the most torque, but were you planning on doing a tractor pull in 5th? And besides all that I believe that what A.M. WYO was stating was something about the way that this particular tractor has heavy duty and therefore strong durable parts which would be a contributing factor towards such a products longevity, hence, or may I quote from the original comment; "its no surprise they keep on trucking" which in this case I believe to be referring to the product lasting a long increment of time. Which is backed up by the fact that these tractors were mainly produced in the 1950s to the 1960s, and the fact they are still running is proof of there quality and ruggedness, which would be why they could survive such long use. Finally, when it comes down to it, I do not believe this comment was about the 830s ability to pull weight, it was about it's considerably long lifespan. And may I again quote. "Its no wonder it keeps on trucking" often a statement, as I said before, to convey a specific items ability to last many years. Now all things considered I believe your response to A.M. WYO's comment was not only unnecessary but also irrelevant. Therefore I suggest you rethink it. Have a good day.

    A great pull, without doubt. But I think just as big an advert for the tyres used, which were set at very low pressure to maximise grip. Farmers probably wouldn't run their tyres like this unless doing work on boggy ground. I'd like to see the same pull with tyre pressure set to normal, where the wrinkling at the bottom wouldn't appear. Maybe these old girls are so torquey that it wouldn't make a huge difference. A fine video. Greetings from NZ.

    The shorter chain gives the tractor better traction. So instead of slipping the tires and keeping the engine running, the tires would hook up and gut the engine.
    The chain is short enough when you have to bump the wheelie bars against the pan of the sled to be close enough to hook the chain up.

    Doesn't a longer chain make it harder to pull? A short chain would pull more weight down on the tractor giving it better traction also it helps lift up on the skid pan making it easier to move because of less drag..
