      Make sure to do the Forte version of that one as well. The original version of Masstaden is still mixed pretty good, but the original version of Thousands of Evils is mixed pretty badly, not gonna sugarcoat it lol. It’s still enjoyable, but the forte is the only way in my opinion

      Same, Thall.
      Did you ever get to listen to the Omnislash EP? I got into Vildhjarta before Masstaden, back when Traces was an instrumental. The song Shiver probably saved my life. It was from a different time, so it doesn't have nearly the production quality Vildhjarta pushes these days, but i'll be damned if it's not still a banger. I've long been hoping they'd remix it, but alas, i'm still waiting.
      Edit: Shiver and Lady Luck (Don't Fail Me Now). Two absolute bangers I highly recommend. Really wish they'd get the (forte) treatment.

    Vildhjarta is just nuts man. Every song they write would be like a medley of the best riffs of any other band, but they do it every song. I can hear thall creeping into so many band's sounds, and it honestly puts a huge smile on my face. What Vildhjarta did for metal, and in turn what Buster has done is just amazing. They make the music I always wanted from metal when I first got into it. Just pure heaviness, not for the sake of being heavy, it is just that the art these guys' makes just happens to be heavy. It is "THE HEAVY" expressed as naturally as possible. They sound inhuman.
    I honestly love HLB even more because it is like Vildhjarta's younger pissed off brother. All in all though, even though I have never really been into the band Meshuggah, the metal community owes so much to them and the bands that they inspired. I hope thall continues to sneak into other genres.

    Man you would not believe that amount of hate this band got back in the day, especially with Dagger. For a lot of people their music was nothing more than chugs and 000s which is so, so far from the truth. Glad they're finally starting to get the recognition they deserve. Also glad that they're still able to put out new music cause for a long time that wasn't a certainty. Anyways, glad you like them! Easily my favorite band ever. 14:30 you have no idea. They've been my favorite band since this album came out. Masstaden cd has been in my cars cd player for the past 8 years, ever since I got the car. It's the default radio. When I heard all those riffs from across this whole album, hodgepodged together in nationalsang I wanted to grab people by the shirt collars in excitement. Vildharta is truly one of the most unique bands we have in music. Buster even said they are his favorite band and if when goes to write a riff or make music in his other projects, it is completely influenced by Vildhjarta. He even declined to write or add his own riffs to under vatten because he doesn't want to alter or change the path that his favorite band is on. Really loved your reactions to these albums. This band means so much to me and when people listen to them and "get it," it is like a sort of spiritual communion for me. So, thank you. EDIT: 23:00 damn dude... lol you literally started feeling the same feeling I described in my comment. When their newest album dropped, there was a top comment on their album stream that said "it's an honor to be here experiencing this with you all." and I feel that in these reactions too.

  • @AshtonFitness
    @AshtonFitness Před 2 lety +5

    I'll NEVER forget the first time I heard the riff at 56:46
    I was walking down a road to my house. That riff kicked in and it felt like a grenade went off in my brain. It blew my F*CKING MIND. The creativity needed to even THINK of a riff like that and actually pull it off is insane. I'd never heard anything like it and still haven't since.
    Now, I've been playing metal guitar for 14 or so years. I always dreamed of coming up with a riff like that but was never quite able to get it to sound good enough, or brutal enough, or fluid enough.
    When I heard these guys pull it off successfully, it felt like my brain had an orgasm, exploded, and then remoulded itself into something better than what it was. For me, that was one of this band's most defining moments. It was actually one of the defining moments of the entire genre.
    It set the bar so irreversibly high that my brain could no longer be aroused by most metal music. How could anything else compare to the dark, haunting, and poignant brilliance of Vildhjarta's compositions? How could anything else compare to their unconventional yet beautiful creativity?
    I've said this before and I'll say it again. Vildhjarta massages that part of my brain that other bands can't reach. They can't even get close. Everything else that tries sounds contrived in comparison. Even Humanity's Last Breath can't do it. The ONLY other band that can do it - THE ONLY ONE - is Fractalize. They're just about on par with Vildhjarta.
    I love Vildhjarta. The end.

    Couple months ago i was at a (normal haha) dance club here in Italy, in my under vatten t-shirt, and a random guy came up to me and basically told me he liked Vildhjarta as well (we were dancing so we barely talked tbh), it fucking blew my mind, i never expected to get a Vildhjy t-shirt recognized lol
    Also edit that i just realized and not sure if you know: they had 2 vocalists on this album and the EP, recognizable by the growls and higher pitched screams that sort of counteract each other. They contribute a lot to the chaotic feeling and are also a very unique component of this album.

    thall. Excited for Thousands of Evil (more like Thallsands of Evil am I right), definitely their most underrated release, probably because of the relatively poor mixing - which was massively improved in the forte version, making it much more accessible to those who couldn't bear the mix. Definitely react to the forte version.
    About the emotional stuff, it doesn't help that the background ambience makes the whole experience feel so lonely and dreadful lmao, that's basically the core of their sound imo. Heavy as fuck but also emotional as fuck.

    Your reaction is a profound one I thoroughly enjoyed watching. Thanks so much for sharing this. I have been transcribing the entirety (all instruments and backtracks/atmospherics)of this album for the latter half of this year and it's this kind of reaction that keeps me keeping on to the finish(currently on Nojja) This music is untouchable, your reaction is entirely valid. And to get a glimpse of how it was written through tablature is a whole other experience as well. Often times when working on one of the tracks I would find myself feeling just like this. I will eventually be covering all my favorite songs when I am done. Rock on dude see you in the future for the next album!

    @atomictoaster8013 Před 2 lety +5

    Mässtaden, as a whole 2 volume piece (plus the bonus tracks that weren’t remastered on forte) is, in my opinion, one of the greatest pieces of musical storytelling I’ve ever heard. I’m not talking lyrically, mässtaden is fairly average in that sense and under vatten is entirely in swedish so I can’t judge it in the same way - hell I barely know the actual plot bar a few key moments - but instead it excels purely in instrumental storytelling. Both albums, despite being recorded a decade apart, share the *exact same vibe* that, to me, genuinely pulls me into the location they’re creating. It’s one of the densest atmospheres in all of metal, with amazing flow between the tracks, to a point where under vatten feels like it picks up exactly after where it’s predecessor left off. I think both these albums are masterpieces, and I know that word has lost its meaning these days, but I still give them that status.
    On the video for under vatten, I mentioned Humanity’s Last Breath as Vildhjarta’s sibling band - and while I stand by them being a fantastic unit with a great discography, I feel like people often forget about Vildhjarta’s french stepchild band because of them.
    Uneven Structure may have already showed up in your Patreon polls, and I’m not even sure if they’re still active today - the drummer has joined ten56 and is doing really well there - but if you’re ever going to listen to them, there is one album that demands your attention.
    Nothing can prepare you for Februus.
    What it may lack very much in production, it makes up for so much in everything else. I’d argue it’s the logical step forwards if mässtaden is your thing - same era, related band, similar vibes - but rather than eerie and tragic, Februus is entirely built around being *h u g e* in every aspect. Including it’s length. While 56 minutes might not seem so big, bear in mind the 10 tracks on display are an illusion - this is one song, and it’s called Februus. And the lyrical depth is obscene too, it’s deep, conceptual stuff. Am I overhyping it? Up to you, for what it’s worth the production is very dated - it demands a remaster, but it doesn’t have the cult following it deserves. You gotta hear it, man, this shit will send you to the stars to meet Februus himself.

    My best friend introduced me to Vildhjarta with their Omnislash album (which I highly recommend) just before they released this album initially in 2011. The visceral feeling and emotions you felt through this play through is how I felt then and how I feel every single time I listen to it still to this day. They have been my #1 favorite band since I first heard them and seeing someone experience it for the first time gives me so much joy. So glad you’re into them as much as the lot of us! Glad I was able to provide a little (and it is in fact only a LITTLE bit of the) backstory, and I'm also really happy to see that the album could spark the positive emotions I was hoping it would!
    Funny that you would wear a Monuments shirt to this because I'm pretty sure Vild toured with them not long after the release of the original version of this masterpiece album!
    Given that you liked måsstaden THIS MUCH and you seemed to like the transitions in/between songs, I HIGHLY recommend checking out my favorite album of all time "La Partition" by Uneven Structure. Why? Well, first of all, ALL their 3 first albums/EP have one common property:
    they. have. no. pauses. between. tracks.
    It's all continuous! AND they have collaborated with one of Vildhjartas vocalists, so they're kind of somewhere in the same space as Vild but with they're own unique sound. Tracks Funambule and ending of The Bait, Our Embrace and Your Scent are just so heavy that it's hard not to laugh because of how ridiculously heavy it is.
    Looking forward to more great reactions to incredible albums!
