Incredibly proud of Ren, I knew him and his sister growing up and know the challenges he faced. Swelling with pride seeing these videos.

@officialWWM I love reactions, but it's definitely the laziest content possible. Bar breakdowns by rappers or vocal breakdowns by singers are a little more transformative but let's be real, if you're watching reactions it's cause you prolly don't have people in your life to share songs you love with so reactions can give you that sense of listening to something with friends. Also, if you're interesting to watch it's easy money so I don't knock anyone getting that bag 😂

@@system0fadowner251 You're kinda right, the people in my life do like music, but from the old ages and awful genres or some I do like, reggae! So I can never really share my music, but I do have some ppl who I talk to abt my love for music, coz it's very therapeutique and that's why I love Ren so much! He made me realize I didn't have it that bad, if you hear what he's been trough and how much it cost him, mentally, physically, financially, coz he spend thousands of pounds!! I've been stuck in a void and am slowly trying to climb out of my depressions and stop abusing pills and weed. I've even joined a gym, haven't been to fitness in 25 yrs. Only in the last few years I travel with my sister to Italy, Greece, we've been through former Yugoslavia and my boyfriend and I bought a motor boat, so the summers are better, but I kept retreating to my room, using too many downers, so I slept a lot. Now I have a less addictive medication to get totally clean. Hope I make it, coz my sister and I want to go to Bali. I've only been to European countries, she's been all over the world and back. They go every year, twice😞🤭

Ren met Sam Tompkins when Sam was 15-16 years old, singing his heart out. Ren was having a rough day with his health so he was heading home when he saw Sam. He went up to him & explained that he’d make more money if people could hear him better. Ren sat & accompanied him on guitar, not even knowing some of the songs (!) Sam said that Ren changed his life that day, giving him the confidence to make singing his career. There’s a short video clip of that day floating around online somewhere. 💜
It's that generosity of spirit that makes Ren truly special. "A rising tide lifts all boats."

I thought the exact same thing. It comes from someone who's experienced sadness in life and realized that some of it was caused by their own actions. Once you become cognizant of these actions that you can control that are bringing you sadness, at least you can then try and reduce your experiencing of sadness that you can't prevent. That's what I felt when I heard it, but to each their own. Cheers

Using “recreational sadness” to describe their experience comes from a place of willful ignorance and zero compassion or even empathy. Those same people can be cognizant of their sadness yet still remain unable to control it. Ask someone who is truly suffering from clinical depression if it is their choice. Nobody on earth battling that would respond that they’re just doing it for fun. “Recreational sadness” only exists to those who don’t understand mental health issues. I’m grateful to have never suffered like that, but I lost a sibling to suicide and there was not a single moment throughout the years she spent fighting that was “recreational.”

As an addict who's been in recovery for nearing 30 years, this song really touched me. It spoke of the scitzophrenic nature of multiple personalities existing in the same brain, struggling to dominate each other. Near to the point of insanity, itself.
Ren also relayed the hope involved with pushing through the darkness to another side.
In my addiction and in my recovery, I have experienced much of both ...

Congrats on your sobriety. 16 years myself and this song made me cry ugly and felt like 10 lbs were lifted off my shoulders. Sober people aren't weak willed, they are like steel. We've been in the flames more than most could endure and once we shed our Addiction we KNOW NOTHING can break us. My recovery has allowed me to endure more than most and I can say confidently that that's because of what I had to overcome to get here.
We are blessed and I wish you nothing but love.
I LOVE that you keep sharing this song with so many. This is the kind of song that deserves as large an audience as possible. Thanks for spreading the Ren love. I'm not sure if you've listened to "Money Game" 2 yet, but if you have, you should make reference to it when Ren does the "she sells sea shells bit" in "Hi Ren", most people don't know that it's a call back to "Money game"2. It's ties in beautifully, not just because of the call back, but because the call back isn't really even needed, it works with or without that knowledge. (But more so when you know) Just more Ren genius. If you haven't listened to "Money Game" 2 yet, you really should.
Ren was walking home from busking w his amp and guitar heard Sam Tompkins singing without equipment. Nobody was paying attention, but Ren caught a bit of his song and thought his voice was brilliant. Ren stopped and told Sam he bet people would stop if he had a mic/amp. He set up his equipment for Sam and accompanied on guitar. They attracted a crowd and the rest is history.
Dude, you are fucking killing it with this reaction series. The folks you're bringing in have been FASCINATING! The way 1Ton actively listens just oozes intelligence and expertise. I've watching this performance literally hundreds of times, and I still came away with an even deeper appreciation after he broke it down. What an absolute treasure.

Man's got his head on straight, he's picking up on things quickly and digesting it rapidly, color me impressed so far, ok, yah, picked up on the two part conversation pronto. It'd be funny as hell to have him listen to The Hunger because we know that's Ren showing off and switching flows faster than you can rationalize them.

My understanding of the Ren/Sam dynamic is that Ren more or less found Sam busking when he was ~15? and took him under his wing so to speak, and then their relationship evolved from there (If you haven't heard Sam's latest release yet, its _GOOD_)

1Ton's reaction is the exact same as mine the first time I heard this. Ren's entire catalog is otherworldly. There aren't musicians like him very often.
Plus, knowing his battle with Lyme disease makes his catalog that much more intimate and genuine.
We've only see the beginning of this young man's career.

Hi ren is the only song I've ever heard that consistently moves me to tears because I relate to it so much. I'm still waiting for my eye in the storm moment, and I'm still learning to relax, but it inspires me to go on putting one foot in front of another and keep going and pushing through it all.

Ren Gill is from the Welsh-speaking area of North Wales. He sold his first CDs when he was 12, and this June he's due to feature at Glastonbury (as are Elton John, Cat Stevens & 100 other groups). He is currently in Canada as part of a 2-yr treatment programme after his immune system was critically compromised. This was a result of him being wrongly diagnosed for years, until finally the specialists realised he had contracted Lymes Disease. The Welshman plays several instruments.

I've seen this Ren vid easily a dozen times but every time I get tears.
Might be wise to play Money Game 1 & 2 to people after they've watched Hi Ren, so that they have context as to what it means when he talks about selling sea shells. Everyone chuckles at that part of Hi Ren, but it's just because of the way he says it, not because they understand the reference - which was Ren's biggest exposure prior to Hi Ren.

It's obvious how much your friend knows about music. He knew within a minute that Ren is multitalented. I've seen a lot of reactors recognize his talent, but is the first time I've heard someone list the several talents within such a short time.
I think a lot of reactors have jumped on the Ren bandwagon for views alone, regardless of talent on show. However, I do believe you are in it to highlight his craft to fellow artistes and bring Ren to a larger audience. Big thumbs up from me.

@13:30 1Ton as a writer myself, you describe perfectly the internal battle of writing. “Balance what the world wants to hear, with what you wanna say.” You want to write what the world wants to hear but still make sure the message, is what you want to get to the world. 1ton, I will be checking out your art next.
Consider showing some of the more original performances with Sam Tompkins or The Big Push. You keep showing cover songs when Ren and Sam have several original songs they've written and The Big Push has dozens of originals. When you show cover songs you're excluding showing all the other things that they're capable of. Them performing their originals, shows it all. Further, the Music Crowns version of Blind Eye is probably the best performance available and it's live as well. Consider mixing things up a bit if you show future people Blind Eye rather than the busking version and this holds true for a few of the songs. Also it might be fun to go back and check out some very early Ren stuff. You can find performances from 12-14 years ago when he was just a kid. I think the oldest one I have is when he was 17 hanging out with some friends and someone recorded. But he was also in the band Trick the Fox when he was young and their CZcams channel is still up with some of their songs.

Don't remember where I got this, whether it was written or an interview, but it was from Sam... he said Ren walked by where he was busking, 15 yrs old, no amp, no mic. Ren was headed home after a day of busking and he stopped & listened. Complimented Sam on his voice, and said he needed to use a mic and amp to put himself across.... Sam didn't have one. Ren set up his gear, handed Sam the mic and sat there and played guitar backup for him for the next two hours... all of the take to Sam. He took home $200 that day instead of his usual $40, and he said it changed everything.... I just love this story, because it says so much about both of them...
If I remember it correctly, Ren offered Sam the use of his guitar and amp and Sam said he could’ve play guitar, so Ren just set up accompanied him.
