I quit my job 6 months ago to be self-employed as a CZcamsr and digital illustrator. For the last 6 months, I have experienced a lot, lots of wins, lots of losses and lots of lessons learned. This is what I wish I knew before quitting. Here is my advice, and maybe my 6-month update.

This video screams my life! I'm an experienced Graphic Designer who decided to quit his 70.000 frs job 6 years ago as well. My colleagues, friends and family looked at me as if I was mad but I kept to myself and my vision. With so many challenges and so many lessons, today I'm proud to say that was the best and the most important decision I have ever taken in my entire existence 🙏🏽.
Keep at it with your head high up Mutombo, keep the faith and continue putting into practice all these points you just outlined. A single ray of light will open up to a beam and finally shine bright like the sun.🙏🏽💖

Lovely video, I only did quit my job 4 months after I went viral and was sure of the content and the income that CZcams was giving. One day I just made that bold move and I must say it’s the best decision ever. But it’s the beginning of self decipline, managing your time and putting in more work. I did sleepless night worked more and slept less. After seeing my first 1000$ on CZcams, I made 10,000$ the next month of going viral. So I had enough money to take that decision to enter CZcams full time. I stopped socialising during this months and only created more content.

I remember when your channel first blew up - it was clear you continued to put in the work because your consistency was on another level. Inspiring! I love such topics. Yes experimenting early is a very good idea. In fact, I think it's going to be an ungoing process due to the fast changing and unpredictable world of today. In about five years time, there may be a sharp twist on a lot of our priorities and choices in life. Those who are very versatile will blend easily.

When working at a job it is easier to stomach criticism because somehow the human brain makes that distinction where you feel like your work is being criticized but not your person. But suddenly when one is self employed, every critic almost seems to be personal because the business is now like a your child you are trying to birth into the world. So when “the work” is criticized, it hits close to the heart, it feels personal . At this point one can not longer separate one’s “work/art” from one’s Person.

There is this Stanford lecture by Pr Irv Grousbeck. He pointed out the importance of identifying what skills need supplementing and also getting a mentor.

Very very insightful video. I recently did a video on my channel, where i was ranting about the problems of self employment. How we don't tend to prioritize our own work and most often than not, our work suffers at the end. I find myself postponing the editing of my youtube video untill a wednesday or sunday comes stearing at me in the face and i have no video edited to go up.

The selling yourself part ehh, I’m on that table. The thing is friends will see something and be like that’s really nice, you could charge for that and that where the problem is.
I honestly don’t know how we can make it easier for people to learn how to sell. I personally think the problem (for me, at least) comes from being brought up to be humble humble humble. To the point where you are trying to convince someone that you are the best person for a job and you are afraid to point out your own accolades because it sounds braggy or disingenuous. I don’t know if that’s your experience with this but I’m trying to unlearn that. 🙏🏽

Hello mutombo, please can you speak a lot about bein a digital illustrator in Cameroon ? I’m a digital illustrator too and it’s difficult for me to make money with 😩 i can’t quit my job because of that 😢 plz excuse my bad english 😅
Awww my dear, even up to now, I don't make a lot of money from illustrations and my good months require me to do lots of illustrations, thus a lot of work. It's very difficult to scale, so after studying other illustrators, I have seen that most of them have products that they sell alongside their custom illustrations.
Having savings is key when still trying to figure stuff out. I plan to start advertising my services (paid adverts) so I will let you know how that goes.
I will think more about this and address this topic a bit better when I have more stuff figured out. ✨
Self employed is the best way to go nowadays,the money is all yours and you have freedom. It looks like you have more views on travel videos,why not do more of that? It’s cool being electrical engineer as a lady why not subcontract in that field?

Hahaha about the travel videos, the short answer is that travelling is expensive and the money those videos earn on CZcams barely even covers my visa fees, talk less of every other expense that comes with travelling. If I can find a host in the destination country, that will make things easier.

Omg I love this question. For me I do a good job of tracking, I can tell you where every 5 francs went but I haven't figured out the separation yet. I guess it makes sense to have a separate account for business... Separate MoMo, separate banks etc. When I figure this part out, I'll share. ❤
