In the realm of trading, you always want to come out on top in a deal. Sometimes, both sides come out successful. Take, for example, the Matthew Stafford trade (so far): The Lions got draft picks to help them build for the future and the Rams won a Super Bowl out of it. However, there are other deals where the trade ends up so lopsided that it changes the course of history. The big one, in this regard, is the infamous Herschel Walker trade.
Minnesota felt they were one piece away from a Super Bowl run. Dallas was merely trying to get what they could to rebuild a broken and decrepit franchise. Many believed that the Vikings fleeced the Cowboys at the time.
History showed us otherwise. This video will explain everything that went into one of the most infamous deals in NFL history (hopefully). - Sport
The important thing about the Cowboys dynasty is that they had to scout the right guys and develop them properly. Just another great example that if drafting was easy, Mel Kiper Jr. would be good at it.

In 1990, the Cowboys didn't have a 1st round pick because they used it in the 1989 Supplemental Draft on Steve Walsh (after taking Aikman #1). Part of the Walker deal gave Dallas Minnesota's 1st rounder. And who did they take with it? Emmitt. That alone won the trade for the Cowboys.

the Minnesota 1st round pick for Walker was the 21st overall pick. Dallas bundled Minnesota's 1st round No. 21 pick and Minnesota's 2nd round pick they also got for Walker in a deal to move up from #21 to # 17. They thought Emmitt would be gone by the 21st pick. They burned two of the Walker picks to get Emmitt, but he was totally worth it.

I remember suggesting you making a video on the Herschel Walker trade. Even though as a Vikings fan this hurts to see I am happy that newer and younger fans understand the original "bad trade" granted even then Herschel going to the Vikings was considered a slam dunk at the time I would argue that even then I would have still called it a bad trade for the Vikings.

It was always a great trade for Dallas and I cannot even begin to comprehend how anyone could have not seen that at the time. (What's the point of keeping an individual maxed-out-value player on a team struggling to win ANY games at all?)
As for Minnesota? Hindsight makes the trade look godawful, and there's no getting around the fact that they were sacrificing their future on a short term gamble. But it WAS a gamble with a chance of paying off in the form of championship contention for the next few seasons. I'd still call it a pretty bad trade as throwing away your future development for a temporary shot in the arm - especially on a single player in a sport with dozens of players per team - is a guaranteed eventual loss with a chancy upside, but evaluating the trade in the context of when it was made, it wasn't QUITE as stupid as its present day reputation would have you believe.
The Cowboys were awful and gave up their best player. That's how it would have been seen at the time. Teams did not take the draft seriously at the time. Jerry Jones was the first to do so and it paid dividends.
You should do more historical videos like this, the Vikings can't seem to catch a break at all.

The Vikings came out on top four times (1969, 1970, 1988, and 1998).

There’s an interesting part of this story that was uncovered recently. Jimmy Johnson actually nearly traded Michael Irvin to the Raiders, but Al Davis flat out told him over the phone “you need Michael Irvin”. What would have happened if they went through with this and Irvin became a Raider?
Imagine if Al Davis hadn't been feeling charitable that day. The Cowboys dynasty of the 90s might never have happened, and the Raiders would've had Tim Brown on one side of the field and Michael Irvin on the other.

Even if Walker lived up to the deal, the Vikings still weren't getting past the 49ers, or the other NFC powers of that era.
Part of the reason the Vikings rebounded fairly quickly by '92 was because they did find a really good running back: Terry Allen
Who ended up going to Washington. MN didn't get a real running back until Robert Smith.
I remember all that well. It was a big trade at the time, kinda like the Ricky Williams trade later on. Tree is correct: if the Vikings had won a Super Bowl, we all would've seen this differently. That's the things with big trades, you don't really know until later on if they were busts. You can't blame the Vikings for taking a swing - bc you never know. Same with the Niners trading up for Lance. These NFL teams are under a lot of pressure to win - so they have to take swings. Sometimes they hit a home run, sometimes they strike out, but they will always stand in the box ready to swing. Same with this current Bears-Panthers trade. Who really knows if that was a "fleecing." This time last season, everyone was saying the Broncos fleeced the Seahawks - how did that turn out? lol.
Along with Stafford Goff trade sure eff those picks, they did win a title

Of course Walker had to run all over the Packers that first game. I had Vikings fans rubbing it in my face, and they were crowing about how they were going to go to the Super Bowl. How quickly that all changed ... And I loved Jerry Burns' post game press conferences. I'm not sure, but I think the rant you showed at the end of the video was the one where he said something like, "One of the best O Coordinators in the league, and they put his picture up on the big screen, and you fuckers boo him!" A local radio station erven came up with a bit, Coach Uncle Burnsy's Fairy Tales, where someone did an impression of Jerry Burns telling fairy tales to kids, and they had to bleep out all the profanity. Ah, fun times.
You're right about the Fairy tales. It was Jeff Passolt who, at the time, was a sports broadcaster for Twin Cities local TV affiliate, KARE channel 11. He was a frequent guest on 92.5 KQRS Morning Show radio with host Tom Bernard. Passolt did a great impression of Burnsie. It was 30 years ago and I can still recite it word for word. It was called, "Burnsie's Bedtime Stories."

Some things never change with Vikings fans. They sure talk a lot for a fanbase that's won NOTHING. Heck, even Bears fans have 1985 to gloat about (granted that's ALL they talk about, but Brewers fans still can't stop talking about 1982, so all's fair.)

Fun fact for you: In his last year in Dallas in 1988, Herschel Walker received an MVP vote while playing for a last place team.
Something that wouldn’t happen again until Justin Fields this past season.
The 1988 Vikings before trading for Walker were actually a pretty darn good team.
In particular their pass defense which allowed the lowest passer rating of the 1980’s, and 25 points less than the average of their opponents.
But Herschel Walker wasn’t worth the draft picks they gave Dallas, and while a better running game is useful (and if you look at the running backs they had in 88, they were pretty good for touchdowns but not efficient), it wouldn’t take the team to the next level like they thought it could.
Looking at Minnesota in the first half of the 90’s in particular, they probably could have used those picks, and it’s definitely a terrible trade, and one of the worst in NFL history for what the other team ended up getting.

Flyers can't be a legacy of failure as they have 2 Stanley Cups and were the first of the '67 expansion to do so(no other of that expansion won until the Penguins did it in 1991). But I often wonder if the Flyers handled the early 90's drafts differently. In 1990 if they drafted Jagr instead of Ricci then draft Forsberg in 1991 like they did and never made the trade. Imagine a Forsberg/Jagr/LeClair line(if they still make that trade).

That is very true regarding the flyers 2 cups. I was thinking of the video he made about the maple leafs as reference (they have won 13). But the moniker of failure applies much more to them then the flyers.

What's crazy to me is the micro management here it's on point that's a lot harder then people would think it to be all those extra picks after the trade.
Actually, I won the Herschel Walker trade. I worked with a group of Buffalo Bills fans in the mid-90s who all went to University of Buffalo. They invited me to their Super Bowl XXVIII Party. Since I was the only non-Bills fan, I was happen to take everyone's bets. I walked out with a stack of cash. Needless to say, when the Bills and Cowboys met in a rematch in Super Bowl XXIX, I was not invited back to the party.

Secondly, fuck the NFL dude was diagnosed with a concussion following the domestic violence episodes in the aughts. He was another victim of the NFL machine and their attempt to cover up concussions to keep players playing.
As for his decision to go into politics. Well, there I have no idea. He isn't the most politically savvy nor is the most firebrand. He's really just super milquetoast. He would have never stood a chance at winning if his opponent was a real politician. But nowadays, you're more likely to find grifters and celebrities as politicians than actual political persons.

I remember that trade well as a Cowboy fan. But I had faith in Jimmy Johnson to pick good college players from those drafts picks that the Dallas had accumulated because he had recently coached in College and knew who were the best college players were. Jimmy was the sole reason for the Cowboys' dynasty in the 90's, It was definitely not jerry Jones

I think the Tunsil trade has the potential to be the modern day version of this trade. Depends on if the team can capitalize but man the Dolphins have capitalized on that trade
Ehhhhhhh it's debatable. Sure the Texans gave up a ton of picks and cap space but Tunsil hasn't disappointed in the slightest. He's arguably the best tackle in the entire league now and will undoubtedly be a cornerstone of the Texans franchise for years to come...that is, if they don't flip him to a desperate team for even more picks.

The thing about this trade is a couple years later the Vikings hired Denny Green as head coach and gm. And the 90s went pretty decent for them. Imagine if Green had all those picks at the beginning of his tenure. They made the playoffs more often than not in the decade including the 98 team that should've won the SB.

The thing that still pisses me off about the 98 team is that the NFL was robbed of potentially an all time great Superbowl between Denver and Minnesota. They were clearly both incredible teams. Atlanta pooped all over the field and gave us a dud instead.
Issiac Holt actually moved in right across the street from me in Plano in the summer of 1990. He gave me a ball signed by the entire 1991 team. It sits proudly in a glass case atop the bookcase in my living room to this day.
This is indeed a juicy video. I remember getting Hershel Walker's autograph at NAS Pearl Harbor when he came down for the Pro Bowl in 1989. Still have it after all of those years. Mom was a Texan and was heartbroken when Landry was fired, but once Dallas started getting the dynasty, she got over it.

If you haven't read it, I highly recommend the Jeff Perlman book about the 90s Cowboys "Boys will be Boys." It covers this in great detail and all the other crazy shit around the Cowboys. It's amazing.

As a Patriots fan, I believe I'm starting to see that with Bill Belicheck now. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being an albatross on that team in the near future.
The guy is a football genius but not in the same way most other great coaches are; he was simultaneously the best head coach and the best general manager in the league for the best part of two decades. Honestly, it's ridiculous what he could achieve all the while surrounding himself with generally less than stellar coordinators (though his position coaches have consistently been top notch over the years).
I sincerely believe he can make a comeback. His teams in the past few years have been fighting for play off spots deep in the season even though they lost arguably the best qb ever (dollar for dollar, it's not even close) and are in the same division as Buffalo. I think New England is really not so far away from becoming a fixture of the post season again.
I wouldn't bet on a superbowl win because that's just not happening unless you have a generational talent at qb anymore and that's basically the luck of the draw in the draft, but I don't think Bill is finished.

@@fortynights1513 For me it's because he's such a legendary gm that he can coach so good. I think out of every coach in the league he is the one who understands his own roster more than anyone. He knows precisely what his team can do and he doesn't tie his ego to a specific playstyle or tactics. He never tries to fit a square peg in a round hole. Once or twice a season, he does something crazy like that time in the play offs where he decided to run iso out of I-formation with cordarell paterson running behind a fullback. I think any other coach would have tried to keep to the normal play book in spite of injuries not allowing it and they would have lost, his patriots went to the afc championship like this it was amazing. I think it was last season when he just decided to not throw the ball when playing buffalo under a rainstorm. Won that game also just playing Navy offense.
He understands what his teams can do and can't do and he will always gameplan around what they can do instead of forcing them into his system. Honestly as a x&o's nerd, it's awesome to watch.
Bill Belicik was no genius when he coached the Cleveland Browns. One winning season in five years and one playoff win.
The "genius" came about because of Tom Brady. It also helped that the Patriots' division opponents were pathetic for almost all of the time Brady was there. Belicik beat the Mike Tomlin coached Steelers like a drum.
He does not have Brady anymore and there are no Bradys on the horizon.

He was 5 years ahead of me, but my Father was his HS Coach. Fun fact- He set a HS Record in the High Jump, jumping 7'2"!!! I was literally standing next to the Landing Pad. One of the most impressive human feats I've witnessed in my 52yrs on Earth. Anyhow, keep up the great vids.

Obviously the league was different in the 80’s, but one running back used in tandem probably won’t help you win as much as a quarterback could.

As a Cowboys fan, I love Hershel but him getting traded was the best thing that happened to us. If a certain owner wouldn’t have wanted to be the man we might could have won more SBs with Jimmy at the helm.
There's a very good chance they get the 1 seed and face the 9ers at home, and if they beat the 9ers they certainly become the first team with 3 straight SB wins. Maybe even 4

@@allthingsgaming6 NBA is infamous for horrible lopsided trades. Getting a pick wrong or trading it away stings even harder compared to the NFL. It’s easier to replace players in the NFL.
The 80s Cavs were infamous for this. They traded most of their picks and were so inept that the NBA passed rules so they couldn’t ruin themselves again. Players they could’ve drafted with those picks were HoF like James Worthy, Dominique Wilkins, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone, and many more

Best case scenario with the Panthers trading up and the Bears sticking with Fields is it both works out for them. Panthers get a franchise QB and the Bears get to add some offensive pieces for Fields and hopefully some big dudes to protect him for more that 3 seconds.
Bears probably thought that whoever they would take wouldn’t be worth a first overall pick, and that it would be better to trade down and take a first rounder a few spots lower.
In particular because they already have a young quarterback.

If I could suggest a similar idea for a video, I would love to see you analyze the trade of Eric Lindros from Quebec to Philadelphia. There was lots of stuff to unpack on that trade, and it changed the trajectory of Quebec from pushover to dynasty.

The Eagels have appeared in the playoffs 29 times in 89 seasons, gone to the super bowl 4 times and won once. Having lost to the best AFC team and their supposedly GOAT player twice. I can't wait for you guys to beat Mahomes...in 2039.

However, the rest of the NFC East will still hold things over the Eagles that we all have done; Gone to the big game and won it more than lost it, had several hall of famers that actually won rings, and have constantly made the AFC(The Bills in particular) our B**** versus the eagles who have fans that boo Santa Claus, their team the moment they are doing poorly, and cry in the rain about being robbed by the GOAT in the Superbowl. The only seven-game reverse sweep in MLB history. WHich is incredibly fitting considering how that series basically ended the curse, and the two franchises involved have had their fortunes drastically changed since.

Only 2 World Series Championships, 2000 and 2009, they were the better team in the 2001 World Series, but got beat by another good team, Arizona Diamondbacks, they really should’ve won in 2003, but they were also tired from playing a 7 game series against the Red Sox, finally they won the World Series in 2009, but it was more of a relief more than anything. And they haven’t ever since then.
@@justinturley7071 I don't mean to imply that they have been. But from a Mariners fan, I'd say the Yankees are above average compared to the rest of the MLB. In addition to the five LCS I referenced, they also have the title in 2000, and the other two World Series appearances.
Only two titles, and I'm sure fans of their team feel underwhelmed considering how much they spend, and their general reputation (the past decade and a half won't compare to earlier generations of their team let's face it). But they've still arguably done more than at least half the teams in the league since 2000.

It's very interesting to know how the perspective of that trade was completely different than how things actually turned out. You'd think with the fact that the cowboys were able to get such an amazing deal under Jerry Jones, they would have figured out how to do that again since then and win more Super bowls but I'm thankful they haven't.
