The thing I respect about Jimmy(and there are tons of things) is when he talks about remastering the Zep catalogue. He has such a passion for it, the joy he gets form listening to it, how much time and effort he puts into it. I have seen plenty of musicians remaster their albums and it's usually: we spruce it up, tweak this, changed that. Jimmy turns into a a several year project. I respect that kind of passion and dedication.

Well, he hasn't done anything musically of any substance for so long, he's clearly got time on his hands to keep himself dazed and amused. Hilarious that he spends his entire time now living in the past, yet, the last thing he did of any substance was Presence, hahaha!

@@bellabunnell3174 Irrelevant. The likelihood of any band remaining together for 50 years actively writing/touring is of course extremely low - virtually nil. That doesn't stop individual artists from remaining creative and there is a swathe of them. Jimmy Page has done squat creatively for literally decades!

***** Nope. Zeppelin conquered its fame and status (at least in the USA) not as a studio band but as a live band. Page was one of the best and most spectacular stage rock guitarists who has ever lived. Anything live from them by 1969 up to 1972 is just great. After this period, his playing started going progressively down hill.
As Plant once said "He (Jimmy) was the Led Zeppelin".
***** The first Firm album is better than anything Robert Plant ever did solo. Plant and Jones were great, but it was more Page and Bonham that made Zeppelin.

Jimmy Page forgot more about recording and studio work then the rest of us will ever know. I will say he is still my very favorite guitarist and has been for 40 + years!!
well I don't think hard rock has progressed much since JimiHendrix ,in studio or live , but LedZeppelin surely competes in the same league, 'A' list hard rockers in studio and live performance and my personal fave Jimmy!

Unlike many other rock stars both Jimmy and Robert are so well spoken it's a pleasure to listen to their interviews.
When ever you think anyone even comes close to touching Jimmy, you just need to watch The Song Remains The Same ..Dazed and Confused.... when the bow comes out.... its all over.
Jimmy might get a laugh about my intro to Led Zeppelin during 5th Grade Show n Tell 1972, fellow student played Black Dog on the class record player. When our teacher heard "...gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove" The teacher made him stop playing the record. I was hooked!

Do some research and you will find that Jimmy ripped most music from others but never credited them. Get ready to be shocked.... I was, as I have been a Page fan for decades....now I don't know anymore what to think of him.
I think many people who are coming here to hear Pagey would agree that he is the best for us in terms of inspiration .
Because he was able to take a pre existing style ( namely Blues ) and take it further into a whole other realm.
Like nobody else has done with such a wide range - His inspiration AND the ability to tap into what he has called

By the time’Page formed Zep, years of being a session player, he had mastered production as well..Not many great players of all time could produce or would try they would hire a producer.. From mic placement to overlaying and writing the music.. Master productions were created by him.
9:20 I think Jimmy Page is the only classic rocker I know who has said he can read music. Lots of other rock legends say they can't read music just bc they never learned. No hate either way, I just think it's cool Jimmy has that extra skill.
I always thought he can’t read music in score, (I think he said reading sheet music, score of music when mentioned that, ), it was a surprise for me. It is true, most of rock music stars can’t read, all the Beatles for example. But we have Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe in this too. Freddy Mercury, Brian May, the Queen guys knew too. Maybe the Pink Floyd? Alex Lifeson (Guitarist from Rush) said he studied classical guitar for one year and a half but he couldnt read music very well. Geddy Lee? I don’t know.
John Paul Jones also reads music and does scores nowadays. For both Jimmy and John Paul it was a necessary skill for doing studio work back in the sixties.

Don't get me wrong, Hendrix could be a "better" guitar player than Page, but Page is miles ahead in terms of overall musical understanding and composition and production.
How do you know? Never listened to Electric Ladyland? Jimi was a visionary way ahead of his time.
Then go to a Hendrix site and talk about how much you like him there.
I don’t get that. I feel that Jimmy is a better guitarist. jimi was exciting and woke us up to something beyond blues rock. It was an experience his way. Psychedelic rock. Jimmy is so much more than that. He is a true artist, a virtuoso a master with staying abilities who won’t take us on a magic carpet ride and then burn out before we could catch our breath and move on in the experience.😢❤😊
I really think by the time the third album came out, people started to see how four musical geniuses became one highly technical format for things to come. I mean, this was like the dream team of musicians who mastered their own abilities, but also had the vision to grow not only as individuals, but as a band. In reality, there were five members. A guitarist, a bassist, a percussionist, a vocalist, and a band.
In short, so many people who “Discover” Led Zeppelin these days see them as the best “Rock and Roll” band of all time. I get that, and growing up with them I probably thought the same way in the late 60s and 70s. But when I got older and started looking back, I realized that it didn’t really matter how you classified Led Zeppelin. The fact that any one of these members could have went any direction with any other band and still be the legends that they are with Zeppelin.
They put out there first for albums in 29 months. Unbelievable talent.
great interview !! few people, unless musicians, realize he was top level studio player at an astounding young age. then produced all Zep albums, then personally re-mastered and released onto CD format, also created alot of technology for sound, recording that is the baseline for all to follow.

Love how eloquent and well spoken Jimmy is. Such a melodic tone of voice (I could listen to him read the phone book), never mind the cool look at his age now. Glad Jimmy is still gifting us with his talent, knowledge and the experience that beautiful grey hair has given him.

I was so lucky to catch the Page, Plant concert in the 90's which I will never forget. My generation is so lucky to have so many great bands like LZ in my lifetime. We have truly been blessed to have their music to enjoy for generations to come.

Led Zepplin was an amazing studio band. ^_^
(They are actually one of only two favorite bands I've ever had, and I am proud of that)
Jimmy Page is a pioneer of music. (Period) He may not be the best (technical guitarist) on the planet, but he may be one of the most versatile pros of the 20th century, (noting his vast studio work of the 60's Kinks, Burt Bacharach, Tom Jones, +), and one of the most important. What really sets him apart; but more importantly justifies the fact that 34 years after the most important body of his work has been done we are still talking about how great it (he) was, and still is, is his amazing versatility and knack for writing kick ass riffs, coupled with his production skills. Few would doubt that he was the mastermind behind one of the most successful rock groups ever. He loves what he does and it shows. What is fantastic for every fan of Page & Zeppelin is that he is still here, and still very capable and obviously still maintains a level of intellect and genius setting the groundwork so this wonderfully important catalog of music can continue to inspire the next generations of musicians. Bravo.
I normally don't get involved in CZcams comments for the obvious reasons, yeah know. But I would like to just weigh in with one more point that I think has been overlooked regarding the accusations of plagiarism on the account of Led Zeppelin. It's hard to now extend any amount of empathy towards Zep because it is now very different in the music business then it was 45 years ago. When you look at the first album, it is in reality a cover album. But that is what bands did, (specifically white bands from England) The Rolling Stones was a cover band, The Beatles leaned very heavy on other artist's music, if not an outright version of somebody else's song but drew their "style" and "feel". Any number of songs written by Paul McCarty in the 60's could have passed as a direct rip off of a Little Richard tune, or something from The Byrds or Buddy Holly. But this is what was going on, very prevalently in the 60's not only with The Stones and The Beatles, but Cream and others. These guys were fans of other's music and no one went out of their way to hide it. It was more or less looked upon as a compliment.
Now we (or whomever) can debate endlessly on the merits of Jimmy Page's legacy.
But the reality is the pedigree of TODAY'S guitar players who credit him for being the reason they first picked up a guitar is not exactly the thing anyone will ever be able to argue against successfully, that's just reality. Not being happy with reality won't change it. And some 200 to 300 million units sold worldwide to date makes arguing over their success hardly worth the time spent debating over equally a moot point.
***** You're missing the point, at the time these records were made they were not alone in doing this. It was very common. Any royalties owed have been paid long ago. So, who cares? They cover a bunch of blues songs. Let it go, Jimmy Page doesn't deny it. Everyone made lots of money, time to let it go. There is literally no controversy here.
***** One may even argue that thank's in large part to groups like The Stones and Zeppelin the audience for guys like Led Belly Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters was broadened by these recordings.

I think the dvd was showing the good the bad side and the happy life of zeppelin and the magic thay created. the fans brought out the magic and the atmosphere created by the production of the songs.
Absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to keep the Zeppelin catalog up to date sound wise. IMO, Zep did the right thing by calling it quits back in 1980. Things really started to go wrong in 1976, and never got back on track when they split, again, only my opinion. I think that for Robert, between his serious car crash, his son dying, the disastrous 1977 tour and then the death of John, who he was very close to, he'd just had enough. Jimmy was still on heroin and who knows what JPJ thought. Taking Zeppelin on tour without Bonham, then or now, would have been the wrong thing to do.

Besides his greatness as a guitarist and producer....Jimmy is the "vision" of Led Zep. Although all 4 musicians were great in their way, this band was the culmination of Jimmy's professional life....and he was the leader of the band, without question.

Jimmy was such a great artist in a number of ways. The producing really changed the sound and variety in Zeppelin. Outrider tour I thought he was going to die - lots of guitars and a lot of strenuous music.

Great interview. I love the reissues they all sound wonderful to me. The reference mix to Royal Orleans sounds like it has John Bonham on vocals for instance.

Was there some sort of a popularity race between Page and Plant that I (or even they) are unaware of ?
He doesn't want to get together with led zep, yet he sings led zep songs. Jimmy knows that plant won't get back with the band, so the next best thing he can do is remaster everything, and release things we have never heard. Alternate versions and previously unreleased songs are pretty close to a live show.
Plant is on a head trip and wants to move on from the very vehicle that put him as the front man for the greatest rock and roll band of all time. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here. ❤😊

Jimmy Page is a pure genius in the studio and this is a wonderful and insightful interview that I really enjoyed. You can see the passion he holds for the Led Zeppelin catalog and how deeply he values the details and nuances of each recording project with relation to the time frame when the works were created. I love his empathy and great recollection of detail. As great of a guitarist Jimmy is (and how important he is in the rock guitar lexicon), it does not surpass his genius in the studio, as a producer, writer, arranger, and engineer. Jimmy Page is the complete artist and real life wizard.

Tl;dr people are those who have a Very limited ability to focus. Therefore they miss out on more than half of what is going on even within their own realms of interest, witch only serves to further discourage themselves from ever learning anything new.
I highly suggest that everyone reads books, especially the tl;dr types, for they are by far the ones most in need.

I am a Zep lover but when it comes to the technical part of listening (vinyl vs. digital remaster) I am a neophyte. 2 questions: 1) Is CD the only way to listen to the remaster or can u buy a download and listen through good speakers?
2) what does a remaster bring out that the original lacked?

I think the vinyl remasters sound great. How about some Mono stuff James?
The good Led lasted 6 years, from 1969 to 1974-75. After that we witness a slow decadence until Bonham death, which was the final cut. It was not a long life for a band but never other group reach the height, the zenith that these 4 guys got.
Of course presence and in through the out door weren’t as good as the others, but it’s still very good. Coda is great Too

I like how he refers to the group as " The Led Zeppelin" and not Led Zeppelin. My favorite is Achilles last stand, and 10 years gone. Has the queen knighted him yet? It's amazing to me as a yank how old musicians or actors are earn tiltles. knights & Dames would be a good name for an album name. I like him because he shares the success of everyone in the group. I would love to hear him today. I wonder if he has any under studies. Every guitar player I've ever know hates to show others how they play. It's like trying to crack a nut. It makes me laugh that Keef writes off Zeppelin. The Stones were, and still are, a parody compared to these guys! Night Flight has been called the closest song to the Stones, but, to be honest, Night Flight is a song The Rolling Stones wish they could write!!

I think people blow these things out of proportion. Keith said he "always felt Led Zeppelin's music was hollow." Which let's be honest, I think Led Zeppelin's playing is better than the Stones, and Jimmy is a better guitarist than Keith in pretty much ever conceivable way. However, it's all my opinion. Keith probably genuinely felt Zeppelin's playing was empty because he values music differently. I wouldn't even take it as a diss, again just an opinion.
@@brycea.339 Keith practically wrote off every other English band of the time, not just Led Zeppelin, though he admired Page's skills as a guitar player. I don't really listen to the Stones these days. Their music doesn't have the variation that Zep's does and does not stand the test of time as well, for me. They were mostly into 3 minute hit singles to begin with and it all just seems about the rhythm with them. Their lyrics aren't as interesting either. Led Zeppelin have much more to offer I think - more to chew on - more depth.

Dean O. : Man how old are you. I was born in 1960. By 1967 I was hitchhiking to convenience Store's to buy the latest Comic Book or buy some candy. Back in 1963 a 17 yr old girl moved in with Elvis Presley. They met in 1959, she was 14 yrs old. Elvis was 10 yrs older. Her father a COLONEL in the Air Force signed papers giving Elvis a guardianship over Prescilla. 50 to 100yrs prior women were getting married at 14 and 15 yrs old, a lot of the time the men were much older. If you actually believe Lori Mattix
was kidnapped by Page, please. Her mother also gave her consent. Times were different back then. Had more common sense. I dated a girl who grew up in Israel. She was 17 and I was 20 yrs old. She had so much more competency and knowledgeable with common sense then me there was no comparison. Point being a person's age has no bearing on the competency of the person and the ability to make decisions with their body. Girls back then being only 14 and 15 yrs old are probably equivalent in competency to girls now a days that are 21. Everything has to be protected now or we might hurt someone's feelings and be careful and don't use words that might offend someone because that is just racist. Man you kids now don't have a clue what a true racist looks like because a majority of y'all have never met one. Grow up in the 50's and 60's they were around in abundance. Now if you don't back every minority initiative because you don't believe that is the right path to take , you are now a Hating Racist. How stupid is that. Let's not allow independent thinking and creative Ideas be heard. People that think as you do are the MADD thinkers who opened up a whole new revenue stream for city's and let's not forget rights being taken by using police powers to avert the Constitution. What I was pointing out is that
times were different with a different mentality and its ridiculous trying to use today's moral compass on a different time period.
I know the difference between a 21 yr old wanting to date a 13 yr old. My house got ransacked because the the girl I was dating had a 13 yr old daughter who some 21 old wanted to date and we put our foot down and wouldn't let it happen. But what if he was 16 and they were still dating when he turned 18 and she was only 15. Is there a problem now? If so why. My dad who was 17 met my mom and she was 13. When they went on dates my aunt and then later my uncle had to chaperone them. This was the early 50's. They were together till my dad passed away at 79. Do people really think they would sound at all the same if they did some sort of reunion tour? With all due respect to their body of work, their live shows seem to start dipping around The Song Remains The Same. The 1970 RAH show is probably my favorite. Just go watch that.

Houses of the Holy (1973 tour) was Zeppelin at their best in my opinion. Before the 1975 tour Page broke his left ring finger and had to develop a new playing style with his pinky for the first quarter of the tour... You can see it in some of the '75 shows that Page's left hand technique is a bit odd looking. His playing suffered too and he was unable to do some of his fast runs as good as the previous tour. Not saying the shows were bad by any means, they were still amazing. It's just a shame we didn't get to see Page at his absolute best.
I saw them twice, in 1969 and '70. Excellent show, especially in '69 when Plant put some overzealous rent-a-cop in his place for hassling fans who wanted to get closer to the stage. Not on it, just in the 25 ft gap between the front seats and the stage. Saw them in Honolulu both times.
Better that Jimmy Page remaster it than some other wonk.

Yes he was addicted to heroin I guess but he overcame it which is no easy thing to do. He could have easily died coming off that stuff. Music business is rough and groupies are no innocent angels- easy to look older and they wanted to be with him so where does their accountability come in?? I scratched Jimmy Pages guitar while doing work at his house in 2016, wasnt even my fault - he was on something and trying to have me hold his guitar and let go before my hands were there, i caught it but bottom swung and hit other guitar and scratched it. He has half way stalked me ever since calling all my employers, random messages here and there. He flips between he is sorry and I owe him a million dollars for his guitar. In 2021 I think while in an I'm sorry conversation he told me he had put a curse on me in 2016 and didn't know how to take it back. He still follows me and calls my employers to screw up my job. I can't say i believe in curses, but if i sat down and told you how pathetic my life is you might say could be something to that.
Sorry - but the 93 box set remasters remain the best. In regards to the recent remasters: Jimmy's ears are older, right?

Alternate takes are always cool 20+ years on. You start to believe that the song was a living entity in and of itself and not something molded and formed with many forks in the road. Then you see some contemporary albums with alt. takes and that makes no sense. There is no "revelation" there. //off soapbox
I'm sorry bit those last Zep remasters he approved weren't true analog like the Classic records versions that were done in 2005.
More bottom end,but that's to try and compensate for harsh and shrill sounding highs like cymbal crashes and Plants voice.
There's a reason those remastered lps are being returned to the bins along with unsold sealed copies.
Just like The Beatles stereo remasters from 2012.
This is why the Classic records series are going for almost a thousand dollars apiece.
Many times it seems great that the artist being involved with the remasters is a great idea.
But it is not.
Remember,an artist that produces and does the first mix down isn't the one who does the final mastering to the RIAA curve before a lacquer is pressed.
I've A/B'd remastered lps to the original pressings and many times they come up short somehow.
The Cars and Bad Company are other examples of this.t
