      @@unfolding_gamedev Defold lacks tutorials, if you take Unity3d or godot they have many tutorials which makes it easier for someone is new to get familiar with the Engine. While it is unfair to compare defold to unity3d, it does paint a picture as to why not many people would choose defold over the other engines

    It's incredible that they went from being owned by King to being open sourced.

    • @romulino
      @romulino Před 3 měsíci

      King was really nice to them, I used to work there, lots of cool stuff like defold happening before the Activision acquisition.

    • @vaishnav_mallya
      @vaishnav_mallya Před 3 měsíci

      @@romulino I see. Perhaps my point was misguided but I heard from other gamedev channels that King was extremely into monetization and micro transactions. If that didn't affect the engine, then they're doing good. However it's a bold step to being open source and fully free. Unity's actions may have sent Shockwaves all across the industry that rugpulls are extremely bad for their image.
      I do respect how a lot of small game engines have their own niche community that keep it alive although engines like defold has grown a lot in the past few years.

    It's great that the engine is developing, hopefully in the future it will become more user friendly.

    Awesome, thanks for these videos! I'm learning Defold and even though it has been a bit difficult for the lack of tutorials, but I'm liking Defold a lot, I just wish they will give us a bit more tools out of the box. Like the curve editor they have, has so much potential, but is barely used for changing a few settings for particles only 😥. Anyways, thank you so much for these videos and tutorials, they have been very helpful!

    • @unfolding_gamedev
      @unfolding_gamedev  Před 3 měsíci +1

      It depends how you utilise it :D You can write a low or high performance game in both engine. It really, really depends ;)
      My current tests show that I can make way more performant things in Defold that in Godot done in analogical way

    Defold severely lacks cross platform VIDEO support.
    This is a real problem for a 2D only game engine, since 2D games usually need videos for plenty of things, like cutscenes, tutorials, animated backgrounds...
    This shouldn't be an issue on a modern game engine, given that everything under the sun supports at least H264 video decoding nowadays.

    Hi i saw a community addon for defold called defkit it basiclly gives us visual scripting like in gamemaker studio and I am not sure if i should give it a try since i don't have any programing experience but i love game development and want to start with defold but I hate coding but i also want to try to learn lua so i would like your opinion on this matter and i want to thank you for the amazing tutorials

    • @unfolding_gamedev
      @unfolding_gamedev  Před 2 měsíci +1

      It's a very old asset, I am not sure if it works out of the box, as some things may have changed. When I started learning Defold I tried to use it, but it was very limiting back then, I think it's better to start something simple following some of the tutorials, because you will learn more of gamedev. If you would like though to start with something simpler - you can check out GDevelop as it offers really easy blocks and is pretty good for learning, but it's worth (and imho a must in gamedev) to learn programming if you want to create games solo - if not, you can find a suitable role in many different domains ;)

    I love your videos, but it's a bit confusing watching all of these game clips, when not all of them are made with Defold. A lot of times I'm like "oooh that's a cool game", and then I rewind to see the small text in the corner that says it's from another game engine.

  • @BackForwardPunch
    @BackForwardPunch Před 3 měsíci +1

    The biggest issue I’ve had with defold is that all sprites in a sheet need to be the same size. so you end up having to know the largest possible size for some animation and end up with space all around and cannot reposition the sprite frame by frame. Did any of that get updated?

    • @unfolding_gamedev
      @unfolding_gamedev  Před 3 měsíci

      I know what you mean, but sadly no - adding offset to each of the sprite in atlas is still on to-do list. Although, one thing is that support for Texture Packer is introduced, so you can draw huge sprites with a lot of transparent pixels around and you can pack everything with such data (offset) from it.

    • @BackForwardPunch
      @BackForwardPunch Před 2 měsíci

      @@unfolding_gamedev Yeah, that was one issue that made it pretty hard to work with, I was working on sprites but had to keep resizing to largest possible size. I actually really like the workflow on defold and like that it produces an executable without bloat, but that was making it hard to work with. Also wanted to be able to change hitbox, etc per frame and did not have the option.

    Still my issue with Defold is using alot of CPU when running game either via editor or .exe.
    In editor usage is as high as 40 to 80% when 4 tabs opened and game ran via editor.
    Is am the only one facing it ?

    • @unfolding_gamedev
      @unfolding_gamedev  Před 3 měsíci

      I don't face such issues :( Did you posted about it in the forum or Discord? If you didn't manage to get help already, give me the link, I will look into the post and check out the details ;)

    • @Volt-Eye.
      @Volt-Eye. Před 3 měsíci

      @@unfolding_gamedev it is there with " High Cpu usage " title.
      I know Game Loop uses CPU but 40% ++ just for a 2D game ?
      And above that, for an empty project.
      Its not acceptable.
      Even only AAA 3D Titles use about 60 to 70% CPU.
      But on Defold I sometimes faced 70% CPU usage and that was constant.
      I never further posted or further reported it on Forum because I believed I would be ignored or spammed if I insist onto this topic.
      But the reality is Defold Editor is that it is Heavy and slow compared to competitors and many basic features are not present ( Drag and drop of files )
      I haven't picked up engine again since I faced above mentioned issues ( its been 1 year I guess )
      But it is improving and I am glad about it.

      I think if you have uncapped fps it’s going to use as much of the CPU as it can so I’d recommend limiting to like 30 or 60
