The vast majority of knife defense techniques are bizarrely ridiculous, and will usually leave you filled with holes... which is crazy. Who would teach a method of defending against knife attacks without actually TESTING it?!
And yet, the Bullshido persists, throughout some of the most popular knife defense styles in the world... like Kali, Pekiti Tirsia, Krav Maga, Systema, and just about every other style that I researched and tested.
So, the purpose of this video and the entire free training program that it introduces is to cut through the nonsense. You will be able to tell which methods of knife self defense will never work, you will have all of the defenses to knife attacks that ACTUALLY DO work, and you will increase your chances of surviving something like this dramatically.
In a knife fight, nothing will ever be 100%... but if you can win more times than you lose, you're doing a great job.
Check out the free course, learn some REAL knife fighting skills, and let's put an end to the BS.

I have seen several of your videos and I respect your knowledge. My question is; are Krav Maga and Kali effective in an urban setting. Please give me your opinion on the FightSmartTrav video because I wanted to join a Krav Maga or Kali classes when quarantine is over. Again I think your an awesome, please get back to me if possible.

If someone comes with a knife, you aren't likely to escape unscathed. That's just how it is.
A knife isn't only sharp... but it also has the full power of a punch behind it potentially... and if they miss, they'll do it again... and if you redirect their stab, they will just slash... if you dodge and kick the assailant away, they will return.
The only effective ways to defend against a knife is to
    1. Gain FULL control of their knife hand and isolate it (Kumura and omoplata are good options for this)
    2. Break the knife wielding hand, or wrist
    3. Incapacitate the assailant with a direct hit to the nose, throat, or groin and get the fuck away
Think about it like this... A knife is a punch with a blade at the end.
How many boxers do you know that can win a boxing match while dodging ALL punches?
None... that's how many. ESPECIALLY if they are trying to enter the fray and claim the weapon at the same time.
At a close distance, a knife is more dangerous than a gun. With a gun, at least when you redirect the gun and clinch the assailant, the gun is incapacitated. A knife, on the other hand, is ready to slash you up.

I think you are 100% right... Except... It depends on training.
I mean let me put it this way, untrained guy without knife vs untrained guy with knife, guy with knife wins every day. Obviously same idea with the boxers, and all the examples you give here.
If you run up against a trained guy with a knife, you're fucked, you best run, because even if you're trained to deal with him, he has the advantage, so that's where your comment is totally on point, there is nothing you can do against someone who has equal training to you and is wielding a knife.
But... Fortunately, most people are amateurs with their weapons or fists. While I don't think training will give you 'advantage' of a person wielding a knife if they are at least somewhat physically imposing and ready to use the weapon, I think it could bring you to parity, because trained to counter a knife versus untrained use of a knife is probably the scenario this prepares you for best...
Obviously, since you are unlikely to know the skill level of your assailant, your best bet even if trained is going to be avoidance, not confrontation, but if confrontation is inevitable, I think training can serve an obvious purpose in preparing you against an adversary who is lacking any sort of actual training.

@@paragon1782 I don't believe you. There's probably a reason why numerous martial arts have taught throat strikes since forever and why they are banned in MMA. If they are so harmless, why are they banned? A glancing blow that does not land right can be walked off and if you're talking about real situations the big difference is that it was a glancing brush that was not aimed at the throat in the first place so they were not even articulating their hand or foot properly to hit that area. I notice some people like to say things like "a kick in the groin does not work" even though it contradicts medical science. I think MMA fans and tough guys do that because they are embarrassed to admit to their weaknesses and furthermore since they don't train or prepare for that in their MMA gym it's convenient for them to pretend that it's not a thing at all.

Basically, in a fight between an unarmed person and an armed attacker, if either of them use a specific martial art, then the unarmed individual has to have three dans or an equivalent higher skill level than their attacker to have a chance of beating them. If you don't or can't confirm whether you do, you should run. People with weapons will always have an advantage, especially if they've trained themselves to use them effectively.

One of the most important things I learned from Traditional Silat about self-defense from sharp weapons is never to try to disarm the opponent's hand, because the basic concept of a sharp weapon is an extension of the human body (especially Hands). The only way is that we fight it with the possibility of our body parts being injured or opening an escape route for ourselves, it can be in various ways depending on the circumstances and the situation.

FYI man. In FMA you really have to quickly poke the opponents eye or hit the face to create distraction after you block and grab. after that you create an angle where you can break the arm and for sure the knife will drop. This what makes kali a dangerous art and it's being used by some military forces all over the world. You can hardly disarm a knife when your partner grips it hard and you're just doing a demo. The actual thing is the one that works. Most of what you saw in yt are only principles, drills and basics that only applies to an average opponent. However you can still apply it depending on the angle and position of you and your enemy. In FMA, you need to master all the techniques and practice on improving alertness before you realize it's effectiveness. That is why Kali is not for lazy people who just wants to feel good in learning martial arts. Most people end up going to gyms that teach "feel-good" martial arts. I hope you're not one of those teachers, brotha.

As a retired tactical instructor, ive seen combat with knives. Ive defended from knives. and ive easily removed knives, in highly dangerous situations.
Why i was able to do this is i have no dedicated knife defense tactic.
Knife fighting tactic, yes... defense, no.
To overthink the removal of one specific object over all others, kind of deadens the ability to be reasonable about it. It gets pretty fancy, dont it? THe movement of one i have in mind....was the knife was removed when the attacker was coming at me...at the greatest extension....then i simply had it at the attackers throat, waiting for the deadly aggression to end. All i needed was the arts i already knew, which were rooted in aikijutsu. It was so fast, the attacker was subdued quicker than the attack was made.
You cant spar knife violence. Its not a thing that can be faked while learning.
Nobody holds a knife the way they do when ready, in actual conflict.
and nobody is more ready for armed conflict, than they are prepared for in their natural combatives...and to be honest, its all in the basics.
control at the wrist. In basic training of martial principles, its at the wrist that we start to gain control of the hand. Do that and anything in it is yours. Anything. Knives arent mystical objects that are special.
    good luck, posers.
Nobody on fucking youtube needs to know how to fight with knives. Its the last weapon and rarest weapon i ever taught anyone, cuz brains in people are stupid about them. THe fear of being cut makes them fools, or fear makes them rely on them needlessly. You gotta get all your know how without knives. There is no fake cut. Good luck knife training with fake combat focusing on them. It Doesnt work. The threat of the knife isnt the edge. Its your stupid mind. If you get in a knife fight on purpose and get cut...fuck you..that's your fault for being a damn fool. The reaction and speed it takes to be skilled at knife defense requires one already be combat sensitive and sensible. Otherwise, you goddamn stay right the hell away from knives. If one is at you.... get the hell away from it. most fools tactics show the person actually standing there to fight the knife guy. Wtf for? you dont need that knife. Unless you have business to stand there....learn what cops have to. find that out, and leave it alone otherwise. Rape defense? Well if youre a woman you could be at risk of rape and if youre wise youll dedicate to learn how to defend your sorry ass before anything happens. Stop breeding losers who cant survive.

That wrist jamming forward move isn’t one I’ve seen in any kali class, however, what you showed was different between different systems. For example the krav maga and karate ones involved coming outside their arm with your hand and slapping their hand, while coming inside their forearm with the your other and slapping it simultaneously in a scissor like motion. The kali video involved grabbing the thumb-pad (fleshy part of palm below thumb) with one hand and twisted his hand in, and then using the other arm’s forearm to push the guy’s palm down towards his own forearm (like if you were trying fold his palm flat against his own forearm). Can’t say that is affective or that you would even be able to get in that position in an actual fight, I have no idea. I can say though that if you had set up your friend’s hand the way that kali guy had his fiend’s, you would drop the knife. You didn’t demo that. You just grabbed his forearm towards the base with one hand and did some shallow oddly position hits on his wrist with the other. That is not the mechanism that makes him drop it in the kali video.

No, he demoed a more realistic version of it with a person who didn't just let it happen with a loose wrist. He is actually generating a superior amount of force compared to those slaps in the kali demos and that is accounting for the demos being 100% staged. Fact is, the other guys wrist didn't even fucking flinch. He gave the technique MORE credit that it was due and it still had near zero effect on a passive opponent.

@@zaferoph I’m sorry but you do not understand what you are talking about, and I would encourage you to rewatch the kali portion and what he did. The kali version involves grabbing the thumb pad with one hand a striping the knife with the forearm of the other arm. There are no slaps. If you understand how the wrist works you can easily understand why it would cause the guy to drop the knife. What he did is extremely dishonest and lacks the twisting of the wrist that causes the knife to be dropped in the first place. I agree. My dad, my uncle and I train in knife combatives so I completely understand where you are coming from. While I agree with what you are saying, it still doesn't hurt to know some of those knife disarms. In a fight, you have to expect that anything can happen. You might get lucky with a bs disarm. My basis for surviving a knife fight is always run away if you can. Nothing cowardice about wanting to survive. If you are unable to escape or trying to protect loved ones, the best thing you can do is to grab control of your opponents knife hand/arm with both of your hands. Next best thing to do would be to disorient your opponent but that would have to be done quickly because your opponent still has a free hand. So once you've gained control of your opponents knife hand/arm you'll have a split second to do something. Example: punch or backhand to the face or kick to the groin. Because what also happens is that your opponent will stiffen his entire body making it harder for you to perform a disarm. So once that is done then you can proceed to a disarm or perhaps even a takedown but keep in mind that with a takedown, he'll/she'll still have the knife so be sure to run away after you perform a takedown. I highly doubt he/she will run after you with a drawn knife.

It's definitely something a legit MA class would always tell you but what you training isn't meant first response, it's meant last resort for the worst case scenario. You can't run, you're injured, no escape route, you have people behind your back, family, children, and you're the only one who is train for the worst case scenario.

So I imagine it's tested in multiple angles, with various speeds, different types of knives (karambit, etc.) calculating trajectory, point of impact, damage, and then fully tested? (also reaction time testing). things like reactionary movement (if it doesn't work, plan B), and you say that they were tested hundreds of times, were they under the same conditions, different conditions, situational, closed and open spaces, and sometimes you have to defend AFTER the first strike, whether that's from the sides, your back, or your front. How much distance/time do you need in most cases?
I mean like, for example, a crowd of people walking around, surprise attack from a random individual, very fast, low-ready forward grip straight towards your gut?
Especially during a struggle, they'll be using their other hand to hold onto you or to strike you, or have brought you to the ground, stuff that you wouldn't really plan for. But then again, I suppose that's what the initial defensive part is for, to completely disable/disarm an attacker.
I imagine you'd get that research done from having trained in them extensively, and taking said seminars, while also asking questions from so-called 'experts' in those areas. There's gotta be knife survivors out there that can be interviewed.
Also, would someone's physical attributes (like size) play a part?
Good on you for trying out all the techniques and reviewing real knife attacks. There's a lot to learn from that. I was actually looking into the most effective systems I could get into for using knives, and defending against them, and I came across your video by chance.

    • @thedildozer1626

We used to practice by using a big magic marker. Wear a white t shirt or shirtless and marks equal cuts and punctures. Our conclusion was that you're going to get cut. If you could limit the damage to your hands and forearms we considered that pretty successful defense. We were learning those knife defense moves in a TKD class and me and a few other guys thought it was BS so got together and came up with the marker idea. The most effective thing we came up with was a leg kick when the attacker closed distance. All the fancy disarms and redirects went right out the window. Using both hands to try to control the hand with the knife was pretty effective as well. If you have people to train with you might want to pick up some big magic markers or sharpies and give it a try.

I was a teenager, without much knowledge or skill of self defense, just instinct to protect my self. Another teen at the time, about my age or younger, trying to bully me, had a pocket knife, only 2-3" at most, still enough to harm me if I let him, held it in a blade upward threatening stance about 3 ft from me, but in a stand off position, not advancing. I asked him "you really wanna do this?" and he responded "ya, what?" confused that I asked him. He was too afraid to attack me anyway, I think he was put up to it by others, they were too afraid to challenge me (despite me lack of knowledge in fighting), but wanted to see what I was made of, and put this kid up to it. Again, I remind you, we were teens. I was maybe 14, this other kid was 12 or 13, but bigger for his age, was probably same size as me.
As he responded saying "ya, what?" and I could tell he was confused, didn't know what he wanted, about the moment his words came out, without hesitation or thought, my right foot went out, high and crossed over, and struck his hand holding the knife, if I remember correcting, this was 20 years ago. As my foot struck his knife hand he released it, and the knife fell. He was in utter shock, and even look like he was holding back pain, and was looking at me as i stood there, knife on the ground off to the side, between us. I asked him, "well, you gonna pick it up?" I remember that moment still, thinking to my self, if he attempted to reach for the knife on the ground, I was gonna tear into him. After he stared at me for another second, he barely muttered "no" before he turned and ran.... like he seen a ghost! I picked up the knife, folded it in, and walked away. He never bothered me again! He tried threatening me with the longest blade of a Swiss Army knife.
I had many fights through JrHS and HS, and though I never had any skills training to fight/defend myself, I always had the will to protect myself. I won some fights, and lost other fights, but one thing for certain, my adversaries never challenged me a second time. I might have lost a few, but I assure you, they didn't walk away feeling like a winner! One thing I learned, though your gonna hurt, you continue to push through, and make sure they feel the same pain as you do. They'll remember who your are later.
Three rules of fighting taught to me by my older brother that stood the test of time.
Never back down from a conflict, or turn your back to an adversary.
Never start a fight your outgunned in.
Never make empty threats or have a cocky attitude when fighting.

    1) defending against a knife is EXTREMELY difficult, and you WILL get cut
    2) the striking the hand techniques work because a person actually using a knife will never grip a knife that hard, it’s practically impossible to actually grip a knife that hard and attack properly at the same time,

I do like your videos. You most definitely bring up great points. To answer your question why are they lying...the reason is they’re not entirely lying... in every tactic that is taught on you tube seminars and even class time. One your learning how body mechanics work in a controlled environment. There is usually one small part of the tactic that will work when executed with the right time Also there is the element of surprise where in your videos y’all no what’s coming. As far as you tube and seminars go they’re designed to help martial art schools gain members and show off a little and have fun. As far as researching and testing. Great advice how ever you should always question the individuals that teach those tactics and that are versed in that system as well. Especially if your not versed or share that particular skill. Especially when the moves and timing are incorrectly done. Also the fma gentleman in your videos don’t use or put down other martial arts people in there videos they put down a tactic not by name. I did Krav for six years. I instructed the level 1 stuff as a helper to the main instructor. We would try the knife defenses with white shirts on and lipstick on the tips of the rubber knife. We would then go all out trying to stab each other and do the defense / disarm. I would say the disarm worked about 15% of the time, with the other 85% being a lipstick mark that shows you just got stabbed. Even our instructor basically had a 1 in 4 ratio (at his best). We all believed that a determined knife attacker is a very bad situation. At least our Krav instructor did not claim that it worked all the time. It's worth a try if you're being attacked, however. Grabbing a chair or kicking out with a boot or running -- all better. Maybe the FightSmart people have finally got it down, but I'm dubious. I will say the gun disarm/defense worked really well in Krav and we tried it with airsoft guns and we attempted to squeeze the trigger before getting disarmed. It worked 90% of the time. So....I'd rather be attached by a guy with a gun (AT CLOSE RANGE) than a knife.

Yep, I also did Krav for six years. We all determined that a determined knife attacker is a very bad situation. At least our Krav instructor did not claim that it worked all the time. It's worth a try if you're being attacked, however. Grabbing a chair or kicking out with a boot or running -- all better. I will say the gun disarm/defense worked really well and we tried it with airsoft guns and we attempted to squeeze the trigger before getting disarmed. It worked 90% of the time. So....I'd rather be attached by a guy with a gun (AT CLOSE RANGE) than a knife.

      @axolotldamage8867 Před 4 lety +5

@Elmo Blatch, as a Krav Maga practitioner, I can confirm this! It is best, rather than attempting the disarm, try and use something like a chair to use as a weapon and to create distance. If there is no weapon of opportunity, then try and make space and use kicks to the legs. If all else fails, or if there is no space, then use the techniques to parry and disarm.

The number one thing you need to remember is not how fast or strong you are...it's Balance! One thing I have with me at all times is a wet towel around my neck and a knife. And fighting someone with a knife, you need to see how he is holding the knife. Yes, you will get cut! All the things I see in the movies are all BS. I have a pocket made into my towels, to carry my knife... It's a good place to hide your knife.

When fighting someone with a knife..... Think of flag football.
Remember how you would dodge someone trying to take your flag? CREATE ENOUGH DISTANCE TO RUN OUT OF THE COMBAT ZONE. Get something in front of you, like a table, or a pillar. If they go left , you go right. Don't let them close the distance. If SOMEHOW you are compromised try your hardest to grab the sleeves of the knife hand in ONE GO. If you slip, run again immediately. Try your best to get away. Don't have too much pride to run, you need to survive.
