I don't think they were going to be empty anyway. The BOOM is always gonna be on point no matter who the director is and a big portion of the crowd is always going to be there for the BOOM
I marched under Liddell and am a friend and former student of Mr. Taylor. Glad to see some positive changes being made. I think "Doc" might have gotten a little lax his last couple years compared to his first 6-8 years. Glad to see Mr. Taylor back, fresh, and motivated after some long time off from the BOOM. I still prefer Liddell's run-on. I just think it's more flashy for everyone to come forward then zip back, but I'm glad to see the cleanliness of the Taylor and early Liddell years back.
I will agree with you as the BOOM definitely sound great, but there is a noticeable change that I believe will get better and better through the years.
The only thing missing from the Taylor era now is an old school Wavey Dave. Whomever wears the suit from here on out needs to go back and look at some old clips of him when he could really get down and add some new fresh stuff to it. Taylor has brought the marching back, though I still see people getting lazy here and there. It's 200% better. I see he brought back the mark times as well. Hopefully we'll soon see stuff on the field we never saw under Liddell or Taylor.
This is definitely a different sound for JSU. It seems as though they are playing to their audience. It was a pretty good show considering; quality songs, and not all the chaos that they are known for. I did notice that the "funk" that they are known for was missing, but I enjoyed it. I'm sure the material will change when their audience changes.
I think she did a good job. She sounded like she doesn't have it quite like she wants it, but when I was watching the auditions I thought one of the guys who auditioned first was the best, though both ladies did have a lot of energy in their auditions.
Actually if you go back to the pre-2001 BOOM's under Liddell the sound as extremely clean. Also, WT did march with the band during those years as well. Doc didn't take them out until a few years later when he winds started coming in very large numbers. Go back and listen to Liddell's supposed " down year" of 99. Even then the band had a great sound. He had a great staff with Adams and Magruder on the team. Not sure what happen in his latter years.
JSU clowned... I thoroughly enjoyed this show overall. For some reason, the cultural pride of it all really gave me chills. Poor Mississippi State didn't know what to do. LOL!
Hi! MSU Alumni and former FMB trombone player here (was a student at the time) to answer your question from the perspective of another band nerd. I was pleased to hear more dynamic control than I had heard from the Boom when they came to town in 09 (my last year marching). They were MUCH cleaner than that band as well. It was an enjoyable experience. Only thing that pissed me off, was our home fans staying to support the BOOM but vacating the stands as soon as the FMB took the field.
There were some Boom members on the sidelines standing in front of where they were sitting. Dowell Taylor only wants the best marchers. They probably were'nt ready just yet this first game.
Good sound, great routine by the J-Settes, STRAIGHT lines, WT Back in the mix. . .Good Job Boom! The show was a bit boring, but under the time constraints, it's understood. Whats even more hilarious though is the people from TSU who were witing for this video to be posted so they could see what songs they had to learn so they could try and make it better only to sound a complete FOOL as always!!! LMAO. . . We'll see who's talking next Saturday!
The reverse used to be true. TSU used to play every little rap and snippets from every R&B song from that season and the year before and brag that they play so many more songs during the game than everyone else.
Dr. Liddell is one of the best band directors that we've ever known. He took a famous band and made it more famous. Now that he has retired, it is time for a modest change. Change is sometimes difficult but it can be also good. Band members don't let the old cliche "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality take over. The Boom had become predictable over the years. It is time for some improvement. If this is a small glimpse of what the future looks like, the other HBCU's wont have a chance.
I think a lot of people are so excited about Taylor being back, they are overly excited. Right now some moves are being made in the right direction, but there isn't a whole lot of difference I see other than being clean on the field again. I know it will happen at some point, but I think some of us are seeing a bigger difference than is there at this point. Its similar to these TnSU people who improved a little bit and act like they had one of the great games of all time in Memphis LOL.
Hi, big HBCU Band fan here. I am aware that JSU has a new director for their band, but I have another question. Has the band shrunk considerably from last year? Because from my observation they are down at least 50 members from last year.
I give Mr. Taylor credit for some of the band's improvement, but now that I go back and look at the two seasons Murray was in charge and the one season Liddell was back, some of these improvements were starting then. I think that time off helped Liddell and Murray was younger and full of ideas. When I look at the last two Honda performances they were pretty good. I think Taylor's biggest contribution was kinda a small adjustment relatively, putting the mark times back in makes a big difference.
Yeah anybody who don't know what they're talking about. A lot of people were giving TSU a thumbs down when they were talking as they left the stadium last season. The people who would say otherwise are probably the same ones who think whichever band dances the best won half-time
They didnt march off the field playing a song. That was new lol. Also they were very clean. First games are usually the basic halftime shows. They all play their traditional school music and the basics first. All bands warm up after the 1st few games
That's probably my only issue with Mr. Taylor. I have no problem with being hard on members and some people quitting in camp, but I don't think size is anything to avoid. I've always wanted to hear a BOOM with Taylor's sound(or Liddell's from the early 90s) but with twice the size whooo!!!!
They sound good and the Jsettes are in point. Please be aware people... Dowell Taylor does not like a big band. He is known for having a smaller band with a big band sound. #SonicBoom
Good recording.....the only thing i cant stand is that when you go to football games like this, your view is limited....glad to see jstate do another field show.....and if this game is going to be on a regular basis, they should try and play some at veterans.....
As a rival and fan of the Sonic Boom, all I can say is, they need to remove that interim from his title. It seems he has been prepping for this potential day for quite some time. We'll see you kats at the Boombox. Should be interesting.
Like I mention earlier tsnu will get the business next weekend!!! We have a Master mind as a Band Director and yes he will adjusted and play to the competitor. Yes the numbers will go back up. So all you tsnu fans stay in your lanes.
I think I have to disagree with you on that one. The band did sound good on the field under Liddell. I really don't think the sound has changed a whole lot this season. Taylor has cleaned it up a little, but some of that is the band being smaller too. Also, the band was starting to clean up a little during Murray's two years and last year. If you think the BOOM didn't look and sound good under Liddell then you never saw the band from 92-2000 maybe 2001.
so we want get too far off base..... i said "the slaughtering in the 5th. cause they were silenced half way through the game for a penalty. and actually the comments came from friends who after high school played in the band(BOOM) stated that TSU won the 5th.
I'm not sure its hatin. I guess they've gotten used to the BOOM of the last 6/7 years, plus some only been watching the BOOM since maybe '04 LOL. People from Taylor's era always asked for him back; I was always cautious they not appoint him a band god. Students are still different today, and no one is perfect. He's not above criticism or incapable of mistakes. Plus, he been out the game a while. Other bands are a lil better. Just saying he's not above scrutiny, and Boom is not "there" yet
i like you......as far as improvement it will be for JSU cause their sounds IS BETTER. not hiding behind any false pretenses about JSU cause i am a fan. but i went to TSU so for them to NOT trying to sound like that other band? i can't wait til next week so TSU and JSU fans can argue who has the best band without people saying that "MAN JSU IS LOUDER THAN TSU but TSU sounds better" oh we got cut off because of a penalty not because of the boom.
I can't wait until Saturday the boom will have more time and the energy is there. Lines are straight, music is clear. Uh ohh tnsu. The Boom is going to murk y'all. The only thing can save y'all will be the rain.
I have to disagree with you. The BOOM did a great job performing this show. For the first game, it wasn't bad. The drill could have been a little more complex, and I wouldn't go with this song selection against SWAC, but it was a very good first game show. SU's first game wasn't just off the chain either. We do need better songs this week and definitely a better drill. SU was much better this past week than week one, but they pulled out an all-time Classic SU show as well watch?v=zk-WodSsA20
Oh yeah even if I go for your argument that TSU won the 5th, It wouldn't be a slaughtering. No one slaughters the BOOM. If TSU won the 5th, trust me it would be close.
.....I'VE FINE TUNED MY SENSORY APPARATUS with a little paul. i knowthis was their first game and you really can't get much from any band after their first fieldshow. but after hearing this, YES my confidence level is up and i can tell in your response YOU were not that impressed. also..as far as the business any band is only as good as their last performance. last year EVERYBODY knows TS TS TS TS UUUUUU got in JSU'S ass even after we were cut off. especially the 5th quarter.
when are they going to change up the way they enter the field. Dam can we get a new entries. I like JUS and they go ham all the time but I want to see something new.
we will see saturday when it goes down once again lol.......don't forget to practice your chant TS TS TS TS UUUUUUU ARISTICRAT OF BANDS LOL. HOLLA BACK
Tsu does not have much versality. Just bescause over half of their book is over 30 yrs lol. The "up to date" tunes u are referring to arent even played well. Jsu plays both classics and new school. Yall cant handle the boom in the stands.
I'm talking bout the 5th and before the 5th. The penalty really has nothing to do with anything. I'm sure all the people who stayed in the stadium after the game were not pro-JSU or JSU-bias people. From the 1Q-4Q, 5Q, and Half-time; TSU just was not on as high a level as JSU. TSU wasn't even as good as usual. And let me tell you something about former BOOM members. We never think the band did that grad and some like Sgt Kevin think the band hasn't been good since they grad LOL
if you heard the 5th you would have hard TSU play some "up-to-date" music. just cause they don't play alot of RAP TUNES don't mean i'm in denial. TSU choose to play different types of music to sow their versatility and dynamics.
I don't think they were going to be empty anyway. The BOOM is always gonna be on point no matter who the director is and a big portion of the crowd is always going to be there for the BOOM
The first song is "Back in Stride" by Frankie Beverly & Maze release date 1985.
I marched under Liddell and am a friend and former student of Mr. Taylor. Glad to see some positive changes being made. I will agree with you as the BOOM definitely sound great, but there is a noticeable change that I believe will get better and better through the years.
That brought tears to my ears, memories of my days at JSU (JSU Rocks the House)
The Dowell Taylor era is back yall!!! this is the JSU i remember from the 80's!
The only thing missing from the Taylor era now is an old school Wavey Dave. Whomever wears the suit from here on out needs to go back and look at some old clips of him when he could really get down and add some new fresh stuff to it. Great first game show!! looking forward to this week, I feel like the Boom gone get magically bigger Saturday lol
I think she did a good job. She sounded like she doesn't have it quite like she wants it, but when I was watching the auditions I thought one of the guys who auditioned first was the best, though both ladies did have a lot of energy in their auditions.

I miss the old announcer! Lol! I kno, I kno.. Im petty!

Personally I'm looking forward to whatever drill changes have been made this week. I'm sure Dowell Taylor and the staff will come up with something.
There were some Boom members on the sidelines standing in front of where they were sitting. Dowell Taylor only wants the best marchers. They probably were'nt ready just yet this first game.
This is actually a decent 1st week show. Glad to see a few things here and there getting back to normal over there..
See you're talkin' about before I was alive. That's 5 years before I was even developed lol
Thanks a lot
Good sound, great routine by the J-Settes, STRAIGHT lines, WT Back in the mix. . .Good Job Boom! The show was a bit boring, but under the time constraints, it's understood. If you watch the videos from 1984-1990 when Dowell Taylor was the band director WT did march with the band then.
I miss the aggressive blowin boom, but they still the best band in this great land of ours.
The reverse used to be true. TSU used to play every little rap and snippets from every R&B song from that season and the year before and brag that they play so many more songs during the game than everyone else.
not after what i just seen unless its some kind of trick......my confidence level just went up another notch.
So happy they made some changes. They look and sound very clean. No point of being big, loud and sloppy.
Anymore videos?

"Can't Stop the Love" album
u got stands?
I guess more clips aren't coming after all
a few more coming
They sound good and the Jsettes are in point. Please be aware people... Dowell Taylor does not like a big band. He is known for having a smaller band with a big band sound. #SonicBoom
Man this make me not even wanna go to Jackson state anymore. Dr. Liddell need to come back.
what happened to the old announcer!!!!!
drill was a breath of fresh air..
well put !
DDDWHATITDOO when and where did tsnu give the Boom problems in the 5th.
Good recording.....the only thing i cant stand is that when you go to football games like this, your view is limited....glad to see jstate do another field show.....and if this game is going to be on a regular basis, they should try and play some at veterans.....
Moves like jagger was blowin though :p and clean
they have the best moves like jagger version...
Yes the band has tremendously shrunk but the numbers will be back up. I believe there is around 159 members this year.
As a rival and fan of the Sonic Boom, all I can say is, they need to remove that interim from his title. It seems he has been prepping for this potential day for quite some time. We'll see you kats at the Boombox. Should be interesting.
JSU look smaller this year is this true?
cool......the one song i like hearing JSU play is HAM....beastmode...is all i can say. good luck
Like I mention earlier tsnu will get the business next weekend!!! We have a Master mind as a Band Director and yes he will adjusted and play to the competitor. Yes the numbers will go back up. So all you tsnu fans stay in your lanes.

They must've gotten smaller or somethin cuz I never seen WT march with the band in the drill. EVER
BTW people it's Rocks the House....no Oh Oh Oh Oh. You actually just keep singing Rocks the Hooooouse over and over
WHAT! ok.... ask anybody that's not a JSU or TSU fan who witnessed that slaughtering that TSU gave them in the 5th
best band in the land
so we want get too far off base..... i said "the slaughtering in the 5th. cause they were silenced half way through the game for a penalty. and actually the comments came from friends who after high school played in the band(BOOM) stated that TSU won the 5th.

Love the performance but hate the Announcer, she has to go !...but ...LUV DABOOM !!!
O nevermind!!! see me lol
This is a money game, put it use a move on. If they come to memorial you want get paid.
Doc needs to stay where he is
i doubt it
Msu only gave them 7 minutes to perform. Don't worry tsnu will get the business next week.
Retired...

i bet ole miss hates it when they all come around
😂😂😂
A&T has a better arrangement of Moves like Jagger
ok
I liked the show except Moves like Jagger. "I" didn't like the arrangement other than that good show
when are they going to change up the way they enter the field. Dam can we get a new entries. I like JUS and they go ham all the time but I want to see something new.

@ robert learn how to spell
That performance suck,I hope ur don't play like that when you met SU!!! Because I'll be scared to tell anyone I'm from JSU
This was boring. Unexpected from JSU. J-settes and dm's were good.
LOL that's too funny cuz TSU wasn't even remotely impressive last year.
