Attending 100+ churches, this is what I think of Mormonism | with David Boice

  • We are stoked to have a conversation with David Boice on the show today! David is the host of 52 Churches in 52 Weeks and today he tells us his story of faith and adventure.
David talks about having a falling out with his church and decided to distance himself from churches to focus primarily on spirituality. However, he had a prompting to attend 52 churches in 52 weeks. David says that through his experience of attending different churches, he was humbled to learn how many differences there were in worshiping Jesus Christ. He has now visited over 100 churches!
He explains his first experience visiting a LDS Church (otherwise known as a Mormon Church) and how surprised he was in leaning about the people and the teachings. His biggest surprise about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the emphasis on Jesus Christ.

In the New Testament, Jesus' message was simple: Love God and love one another. How does the LDS church help people to attain that above other churches? I attended an LDS church and a family told me that I was sitting in "their" row. I felt unwelcome.

      I agree.
I grew up Catholic , left at age 16 for 7 years , and came back last year.
Upon my return to God, I had a bad encounter with an LDS member and that made me mad and in my anger I started to criticize the LDS church and the believers. Became anti Mormon and really hated the LDS
Then I realized that this was no way to be a Christian, so I prayed that God could change my heart from hate to love and he did.
After that I began my journey on learning all things LDS , then while scrolling through my youtube feed I saw a video from @Hello Saints and have been following him since the very beginning and have learned A LOT
Now I have been learning about Mormonism for over a year, and attended a temple tour recently (although I was a bit uncomfortable at times but still a nice experience) , plan on attending a few Sunday meetings soon, etc.
I too have made it my mission to learn about all of the other Christian churches , I love learning about what everyone believes.
So far Ive attended a Baptist service , Byzantine Catholic divine liturgy (Mass) , I plan on attending a Greek Orthodox Divine Liturgy soon, I have plans to visit a Lutheran, Episcopalian, Methodist, Baptist, LDS , etc services.
I really hate how divided Christianity is and I often think that this isn't what Jesus would have wanted. Which is why I returned back to the Catholic church.
But still, I love meeting my fellow Christian brothers and sisters in Christ.
I spend sooo much more time learning about other Christian faiths , I really believe that we should all come together as one.

I grew up LDS and was fortunate to have a father who did a lot of fireside’s regarding the restoration of the church using a movie size screen painting my aunt painted of the Plan of Salvation. I knew where we came from, why we’re here and where we’re going when we die. Because of this, I thought everyone who went to a Christian Church knew and believed these things. Even though I have learned much about other belief’s I always came back to the LDS church because there’s so much more knowledge restored by the Lord and I found my questions from the Bible explained many times in the Book of Mormon. I love how a new convert said the Bible and Book of Mormon are like a Husband and Wife! In the Book of Mormon the things happening in the world today were written about and help me in my own preparation. I feel sad that some people refuse to read these words from those who lived on this continent long ago. They are of great worth for these last days.

Question? When you went door to door were you up front with what LDS believe and what Joseph Smith preached? Example; Do you tell them the KJV under your arm is a corrupted bible and the BoM is superior? Do you tell them your LDS corporation is the only true church and every other denomination is false. Do you tell them Brigham Young said the only path to to the highest salvation is through the LDS membership and their priesthood? Big question do you tell them the Book of Mormon was translated by Joseph the stone seer gazing into his treasure digging rock with his face stuffed in his hat?

The problem I have is that it's too close to the 1769 KJV that was in Joseph's possession.
He said he was using a stone in a hat to translate ANCIENT GOLD PLATES. If these plates are from before the 1769 KJV Bible, they couldn't contain the errors and mistranslations from the 1769 KJV. According to the Book of Mormon, these records were engraved on golden plates in a language called “reformed Egyptian” and buried by the last prophet, Moroni, around 421 AD. Joseph Smith, the founder of the movement, said that he was guided by an angel to the location of the plates and that he translated them by the power of God using a device called the Urim and Thummim.
One of the challenges to the authenticity of the Book of Mormon is the presence of many linguistic similarities to the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, which was published in 1611 and revised in 1769. The Book of Mormon contains not only the same words and phrases as the KJV, but also some of its translation errors, anachronisms, and textual variants.
For example, one of the most cited examples of KJV errors in the Book of Mormon is Isaiah 9:1, which reads:
Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.
This verse is quoted verbatim in 2 Nephi 19:1, but it contains a mistranslation of the Hebrew word kaved (כָּבֵד), which means “honor” or “glory”, not “grievously”. The correct translation should be:
Nevertheless there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan.
This error was introduced in the 1769 edition of the KJV, which was based on earlier editions that had corrupted or misread manuscripts. The Book of Mormon follows this error, suggesting that Joseph Smith used the 1769 edition as a source.
Another example is Matthew 5:22, which reads:
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
This verse is quoted almost exactly in 3 Nephi 12:22, but it contains a textual variant that is not found in the earliest and most reliable Greek manuscripts. The phrase “without a cause” (εἰκῇ) is absent from these manuscripts, implying that Jesus condemned all anger, not just unjustified anger. The phrase was probably added by later scribes who wanted to soften Jesus’ teaching or harmonize it with other passages. The Book of Mormon follows this variant, suggesting that Joseph Smith used a late and derivative text as a source.
There are many other examples of KJV errors in the Book of Mormon, such as Isaiah 2:16 (which mistranslates “ships of Tarshish” as “ships of the sea”), Matthew 6:13 (which adds a doxology that is not original), and John 1:18 (which uses “only begotten Son” instead of “only begotten God”). These errors raise serious questions about how Joseph Smith translated an ancient text using a modern one that contained mistakes and alterations.
One thing is certain - those errors could not have been on the gold plates. So the Book of Mormon was not taken from gold plates

At age 17 God used something I was very interested in to get my attention so he used a radio-controlled airplane. I watched him fly for two weeks while sitting on the other side of the grass field he was flying from. He finally invited me to come closer which excited me. The day before Sunday I asked if he would fly tomorrow, He said no I never fly on Sundays because I go to church and spend time with my family. I asked what church he goes to and he said Mormon. I had never heard of it and I said what is a Mormon? Now I am one and have never regretted it. I was born in Kennett, MO, and moved to Oregon at age 3.

As a missionary I jumped on every opportunity to visit other churches when I was invited. I went to many many churches. Not only was it a great way to meet people who wanted to learn about our church but it strengthened my testimony to see what was missing. Different churches have different levels of completeness but i felt there were always glaringly obvious things just missing from each one. I rarely felt that other churches were just wrong. Most of them were full of great people just trying to get closer to God and do the right thing. I never felt that they were wrong as much as there was just a lot missing that they weren't aware of yet. I learned most churches actually believe many similar things to us about grace and heaven and hell and the mercy of God and how to live righteously. It was eye opening to me to realize what many other churches teach about heaven is very close to what we believe about the telestial or terrestrial kingdom. How many really teach eternal marriage/family/progression? Its "til death do us part" and maybe become an angel in heaven after you die. In a nutshell the church of jesus christ of latter day saints simply teaches that there is more. More possibility for eternal reward, more holy places on earth, more scriptures, more prophets!

Fun to see David and David visiting in person! I'm one of the many who boosted the number of views to the 2 LDS videos of David Boice you mentioned. A quick note that the quiet reverence expressed toward Pres. Nelson at the during General Conference (and for past prophets) would be a reverence for the God-given priesthood keys he holds as the Lord's prophet. As Jesus gifted Peter, "I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 16:19), so we believe he also gifted President Nelson-and those prophets of the church who came before him-with the same priesthood keys.
I'm really curious about David Boice's thoughts about what another David has to say about his long search... David Alexander!

    • @francineplatt7303
      @francineplatt7303 Před rokem +1

@@BGCflyer It IS amazing! Here is part of the story:
The recorded accounts in the Church are that the restoration of priesthood authority was given to Joseph Smith first through a heavenly visitation by John the Baptist to ordain him with the Aaronic Priesthood (under the direction of Peter who is under the direction of Christ), followed a few weeks or months later by Peter, James and John ordaining Joseph with the Melchizedek Priesthood keys.
      The Church's website states:
"Through the priesthood, God accomplishes the work of salvation and exaltation. The priesthood authority and keys needed to direct God’s work on earth were restored to the Prophet Joseph Smith. These keys are held by Church leaders today. They call and authorize others to assist in God’s work."
"A priesthood line of authority is 'a sequential pattern of ordinations that can be followed back to the early beginnings of the Church and ultimately to the Savior.' This orderly chain ensures that God's priesthood authority has been received in an unbroken line from Jesus Christ and that 'no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.'
From Joseph Smith History, we read about the first account:
"We still continued the work of translation, when, in the ensuing month (May, 1829), we on a certain day went into the woods to pray and inquire of the Lord respecting baptism for the remission of sins... calling upon the Lord, a messenger from heaven descended in a cloud of light, and having laid his hands upon us, he ordained us, saying:
"Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah, I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and this shall never be taken again from the earth until the sons of Levi do offer again an offering unto the Lord in righteousness."
... "The messenger who visited us on this occasion and conferred this Priesthood upon us, said that his name was John, the same that is called John the Baptist in the New Testament, and that he acted under the direction of Peter, James and John, who held the keys of the Priesthood of Melchizedek, which Priesthood, he said, would in due time be conferred on us, and that I should be called the first Elder of the Church, and he (Oliver Cowdery) the second. It was on the fifteenth day of May, 1829, that we were ordained under the hand of this messenger, and baptized."

I’m sure you have had many overtures to explore more about the LDS church than I can imagine. Let me make one more suggestion for your consideration. About 50 years ago, I read the book: Marvelous Work and a Wonder by LaGrande Richards. I have read it several times. While on a plane ride a few days ago, I was reading it again, and I thought about you and your quest for learning. The book does a wonderful job of describing many things in the LDS faith in a way that for me at least helps clarify so many rich doctrines and practices in the LDS faith. I just wanted to make that suggestion for you to read it if you can. Thanks so much for your great approach in your process! Perhaps a second round of the General Conference on April 6-7 may provide additional answers as well. May God continue to bless you! Kurt Southam

And thank you for risking your viewers seeing God alongside you, terrifying risk, that's the ultimate goal... of your work and videos, keep 'em coming, He just might!!! Thank you!!! And 23:23 time stamp "spoiler alert" following up comment from me about the ending of the book, what happens to the Nephites, I just want to remind everyone that while it's true what Cameron said about it being a tragic ending, it's actually a twist ending in that the Nephites were actually succeeded by "Nephites" not just Lamanites because in fact who are the Lamanites of the final chapters of the Book of Mormon but rather Nephites who had fallen away and started calling themselves Lamanites when in fact they were a mix, quite possibly primarily of Nephite decent. In fact, when the brethren stumbled upon one of the millions of skeletons scattered across the Great Lakes region of America on down the Mississippi valley and across, he said that it had been a Lamanite who was a Prophet of God who had lived on the western coast of America and had died in the final wars. And so, there were probably just as many Lamanites among the Nephites and who perished alongside the Nephites, as well as ample ancestral lineage Nephites who made up possibly a large portion if not all of the offending Lamanite armies and nations which wiped out the native self-identifying Nephite nation. And so it's a poetic last laugh by God, on those who identified as Lamanites and prided themselves on having wiped out the Nephites when in fact they may have themselves been Nephite ancestry and in fact wiped out the Lamanite blood just as well as Nephite to similar extent or more so. It just goes to show that it's never safe to raise an arm in violence because we always end up doing just the opposite of what we had intended and indeed when pointing the finger there are always three fingers on that person's hand pointing back at that person. During the initial passions that instigated the 2nd World War around 1938 in Europe, one such incident that incited the masses to destroy half the planet, was when a supposed decedent of the House of Judah shot a supposed citizen of such and such nation... when later it turned out that each of those two persons, their nationality, origin, religion etc, was switched, opposite that. Identically in the late 1800s there was a man who shot a US President, and at around the same time as that incident, but in a different city far way, the US President's son had fallen under the wheels of a rail car, when suddenly a man, by mere coincidence the brother of the assassin, rescued and saved the life of the US President's son (Edwin Booth/Robert Lincoln)! When we think we're hurting our enemy, it turns out to be our own who we've injured, maybe that's why Jesus said love and forgive everyone even our enemies... because it might turn out that they are in fact ourselves, our kin, our dearest friend, etc, etc. And if only the militias of those two states on that fateful morning, who surrounded that tiny jail cell in that tiny two story jail house, accosted 4 unarmed men (unless we count the 2 pepper-pistols as weapons which when fired point blank caused minor scrapes), locked in a jail cell, largely unarmed, by more than 100 state supplied, state armed (latest technology weaponry), state trained soldiers, had followed that motto of Jesus, they would not have slain innocent men, no-less the first and possibly only US Presidential candidate ever assassinated, who many experts say would've averted the Civil War and abolished slavery 20 years before anyone had ever heard of Abraham Lincoln (a thousand times better than how it was eventually carried out, dare I say slavery wasn't entirely abolished at all). And so in the end, don't we see that it's a twist ending, that poetic justice is served, and we find out later the fact, and fall to our knees uttering, truly Thine ways are just, and as Moses uttered, never before did I suppose that man is nothing, when shown all the planets of the universe. Hallelujah indeed! NOTE: The fact that Edwin Booth was tailing Robert Lincoln indicates far more reaching implications actually since coincidence doesn't exist. For anyone who never know about some or any of those historical events, you can learn more by simply googling it to the googler of all googlers none-other-than google itself, and enjoy! :-D

Favorite statement of the whole interview: “How can I reach out and be as Christ-like as possible?” That’s really the point of learning about any church, right? How does any church help with that goal?
    Favorite Book of Mormon story:
    1) so many!!!
    2) 3 Nephi 12-18 = the BEST conference talk ever given with solutions to every problem I’ve encountered so far.
Thanks for this great gift today!

@@lanbaodeLDS is tied to Freemasonry and has another Gospel and another Jesus. Just look at the symbols on the front of their Utah museum. Not a cross to be found but the all-seeing eye of horus, pyramid, Jesuit SUN symbolism and much more...
The top leaders of the Roman Catholic Church worship the Sun god of Babylon, which is ultimately Satan worship. They fulfill the prophecy of Mystery, Babylon the Great; as they worship the pagan gods of Babylon, under the guise of Christianity. No wonder this church is so closely tethered to Rome via Ecumenism.

@@ReadRomans10 what you know about the Catholic Church is just a caricature and and misrepresentation fed to you by your (false) teachers. The idea goes back to what is now a debunked anthropological theory by Alexander Hislop in his 1858 book The Two Babylons. It’s been repeated or amplified and spread by anti-Catholics since then but scholars today simply dismiss his claims as too unscholarly and just driven more by his antagonism (rather than scientific study) against Catholics. As you and your teachers hold this view, it just shows how outdated and stupid are your knowledge. Poor minds. Poor hearts (hate the Catholic Church). You can be smarter than that. To really know and understand what the Catholic Church officially teaches, go beyond your (false) impressions and perceptions molded by your (false) teachers. I invite you to take up and read the Bible side by side with the “Catechism of the Catholic Church.” And know that the Catholic Church is the original, true, and full Christian church founded by Jesus himself some 2000 years ago.

"The question to be asked: is [it] the Church founded by Jesus himself some 2000 years ago?"
Yes, it is His church church that He restored some 2000 years ago after it had been, to a large extent, horribly corrupted during Old Testament times.
After that restoration some 2000 years ago and its flourishing for a while, the church again became corrupted because of reason of the Great Apostasy which ushered in the Dark Ages; or, more accurately, the Dark Age. But during the Great Apostasy, there certainly were a lot of people who tried their best to reform the Church back to what it was actually like when Christ had instituted it during His time with a majority of them ultimately failing but not for lack of effort but rather because they just didn't have any true power and authority given to them by Christ to restore His church again in the way He wanted and in His timing.
But, eventually, He did restore His church - or rather, more accurately, restored the true gospel since it was that (the gospel) that was taken from the Earth by the Father because of humanity's perversion of it while the church was left on the Earth - in the 1830s through Their authorized servant, Joseph Smith Jr to never be taken from the Earth ever again but to endure forever more from the time of the second restoration of the true gospel onward through all eternity defying every attempt by unhallowed hands to again try to pervert and even this time to destroy the true gospel with malicious lies, slander, calumny, defamation, denial, obfuscation, obscurement, outright threats of annihilation etc.
But the church will most positively come through virtually unscathed and burnished bright as if it had gone through a refiner's fire which, metaphorically speaking, it essentially has been going through, does now and will continue to do until the Great Jehovah Himself will say that "the work is done" similar to what He said to the Father while He (the Son) hung on the cruel cross of Calvary ie Golgotha when He finished His preparations unto all of the children of men ie mortal humans for their physical salvation given to them as a free gift. But also spiritual salvation which, unlike physical salvation, is not a free gift although it was freely given. Spiritual salvation is not a free gift because that's what Jesus Christ literally paid for with His blood, sweat and tears and so we must pay Him back for that price He paid and He asks us to pay Him back for it in really easy terms and conditions of donating our time, talents, skills, information, learning, knowledge, understanding, comprehension, wisdom and other such resources that we might have at our disposal for the building up of the Kingdom of God and HIS Christ here on the Earth.
Make any sense? I sure hope it does? God bless you and yours and take care.

I want to say Thank you to you, David. I agree with the other comments about your kind and interesting observations. I have enjoyed listening to you very much! So, I watched the temple tour video. I have some questions & thoughts.. you said you randomly found out that your great-grandfather was a member of the Church!?! That made me think that it must have sparked a myriad of questions for you like it did for me. Was it just him (how far back were your ancestors actually baptized members), what was that first conversion story? Did you ever find out more about that, like did he attend regularly? Did his wife? Why was your grandpa not baptized, etc.?
The other thing I was thinking was that it might be nice for you to attend another temple tour where people are quiet and where guides actually tell you some info about each area. My guess is that since you said you came kind of last minute and right before it closed that maybe they just didn't have the volunteers there anymore who were ready to say something (like its usually a 3X5 card paragraph they read aloud, or memorize & tell about the place, i.e. the baptismal font). Or maybe you could ask a member or a family to go through with you and answer your questions as you go along if no one is guiding again? Just a suggestion that might make it a little more of a rewarding experience xo

The quickest way to find the right church is to ask heaven father in faith and the holy spirit will manifest the truth to you think of your eternal life rather than an observation podcast heavenly father knows you heart and if you are saying the good and also intend to include the negative by your judgement your not ready god won't be mocked but its great you went along maybe the spirit led you I'm a latterday saint and we don't bother about talking about the negatives in other religions we just preach our own and allow all people to worship how where and what they may be prayerful fast i know the church is true and pray you will find this too thank you for your loving respectful beautiful spirit jesus loves you very much and will be your constant companion

I grew up in the United Methodist church, and young kids were put in the nursery during church services.
