Mobile Suit Gundam Review / Brutal Deaths / One Year War/ The Doomcast Episode 302

- Way more brutal than I remember, Mobile Suit Gundam was apparently a 1979 kids show, but killed major characters like it was written by George RR Martin. Absolutely nobody was safe in a show about the harsh reality of war. If they made you care about them, they were about to get murked.

I can't believe you forgot to talk about the most brutal death in the whole series: Char straight up decapitating Kycillia with a rocket launcher.
Bits and pieces of her and her crew flying around while things go boom. Shit was nuts.
I was gonna comment that
After Watching Origin, Kycillia tried to kill char as Casval so serves her right
I forgot about a lot of these. The deaths are even more horrifying in the novels and series like Thunderbolt show the brutality of what a war like this would be like in quite a bit of detail. Tomino certainly didn't glorify war lol. There's a realism and a human quality to the original Gundam that a lot of shows since don't seem to capture completely.
Of course, because this is war, the gorgeous robots in the UC series are just the outer skin, and the anti-war is the core, is such shame current Gundam series are just Bandai’s advertising implants.
@gensokyo boyz IBO is pretty meh in its storytelling. They had good things going, but then it devolves into shallow advertisement.
@@damiester1 its basically a mafioso/gangster story with get this FUCKIN GIANT ROBOTS, and we all know how that story goes, if you ever watched a Mafioso or criminal documentary they always show their rise and fall.
Tbh the same "wAr iS BaD mKaY" gets a bit repetitive so they have to change it up
Did the message change? They just got creative at telling it.
It’s also got more and more progressive and addresses racism (Seed/Seed Destiny), identity (WFM) and more. It has ups and downs, but the anti-war core is still there.
Actually they didn't kill Amuro because Bandai saw the toy sales and convinced Tomino that they could make sequels out of Gundam.
That cannot be true as to my understanding, the toys did not take off in sales until a few years after the show was cancelled. The show on its release was very low rated and I even think a few episodes were cut due to this. It was a futurama/family guy/star trek effect where a show becomes popular after its cancellation. So in essense, this statement cannot be true.
@@Uthandol That's the thing. The novel was the original Tomino script for Gundam. The anime was the final draft after arguing with Sunrise and the promoter who wanted a Super robot show to sell toys. That's where the famous Gundam colors and more ridiculous Zeon suits come from. As well as the entire core block concept. As they wanted to rip off shows like Getter Robo.
Not true. Bandai had nothing to do with the original series
@@aliastheabnormalnope. The zeon suits were never meant to get toys so the designers could make what they want without having to be marketable
@@angellara7040 I never said that. Also Gundam didn't sell until the plamo kits came out.
There's a reason it's called soldiers of sorrow... Miharu honestly blindsided me... and what happens to her siblings???? 🥺
The ending of that episode hit hard af
One of grows up to join the AEUG and the other one was killed in a Newtype Research Laboratory.
I've been a Gundam fan for a long time, but I only recently watched the original movies. My reaction was literally "This was marketed as a KID'S SHOW?!?!"
The movies are way more violent than the show was from memory
Kids love war crimes
TEEN'S SHOW... Gundam was aimed at adolescent boys ("Shounen") to sell them Gunpla and Plamo, plastic models of robots and ships. Those ain't toys.... Facts.
I love the complexity of MSG and MSZG especially. I love, that you find out narratively the hard way, that the Federation is also a very oppressive oligarchy, that spills into fascism with the Titans and CONSENT.
And in fact you can get a hint of that from the japanese name of the series "Kidō Senshi," which is more accurately translatable as "Mobile Infantry," which is a reference to the Mobile Infantry of the Terran (Earth) Federation from Starship Troopers.
minor charater, but who remember the guy burning alive inside his Zaku while it was attracted by Earth gravity during an unwanted re-entry...I'm Italian, we had Gundam aired back in 1980, Italian dubbing was great in some point,I was still 11 yo back then ,the guy started burning into the cockpit and repetedly screamed mom I'm burning mon I'm burning aaaarrgh aaargh...guys I had goosebumps back then and still have remembering that moment,it was an horrendous death...
that guy's death is brutal. Char tells him they can't help him but at least he forced the Gundam to burn too. And then that turns out not to be true, so that guy got cooked for nothing 💀
I really want a remake following the same style as origins & Cucuruz Doan's Island movie, or least a few movies if they dont want to remake the entire 43 episodes series, and keep it as gritty or more with the deaths and the effects of warfare
Miharus death caught me off guard. Not only cause Kai is my favorite character but because how real her death was. Being killed by the shockwaves of a missile isn’t something you see often I was in genuine disbelief on her death. Like if this show was made today it would have been a more typical or honorable death scene like her getting shot or something
Degwin: Gihren. Gihren, your Hitler is showing.
Gihren: Hitler was a weak ass bitch. I am built different. Watch me, father.
Degwin: Dear God...
1:48 I think that's the difference between Gundam and Ideon (besides the real vs super robot difference) is that Gundam is anti-war but can still be watched by kids.............Ideon is not.....it is NOT a show I would want kids to watch..........it's Lovecraftian horror disguised as a super robot anime
Kill 'em all Tomino wrote or directed Gundam and Ideon. After everyone dies, the ending of Ideon showed a dead character having a baby after her death. Really strange, but the way it was handled was so beautiful. Gotta watch it to believe it. There's a reason why Tomino has that nickname!!
6:23 - how did i never notice this...
First time seeing your channel. You made some really great points about one of my favorite anime franchises (my favorite anime is its sequel, Zeta Gundam) in a quick and concise way. Great video.
Excellent analysis! Your points are part of what makes the first Gundam series so good and ageless in its themes.
Man, I remember being so relieved by the ending. It was stressful as hell not knowing who was going to make it.
This series very much does not shy away from the brutal truth of war. People that you might otherwise like are fighting on both sides.
You forgot to add that Degwin compared Ghiren to Hitler and warned him about his downfall and Ghiren only took it as a compliment. And there's the fact that after Degwin lost Garma, he lost interest in continuing the war and was about to start to talk about peace with Revil.
Gundam is a AI controlled mobile suite, though we called it machine learning back then.
But as episodes go on, Amuro is getting exceed AI's ability.
That's the hidden message Tomino wanted to deliver, which is 'New Type' humanity is going to exceed computer's ability which only can predict futures based solely on the past experiences.
Yes, absolutely this anime is not for kids but filled with a lot of messages for teenagers who are going to build futures.
2scoops for Spacenoid Independence.
Not a single hamburger 🍔 in gundam
Bernie! 😭😭
Aw
and nowadays they say anime is only for kids .... wow
They've been saying that for a lonnnnng time.
It's much better nowadays. Back even a decade ago, many people associated anime with kid cartoons. It has been that way for decades (probably because 60s and 80s anime imported to the west were heavily censored and many western cartoons (outside of Bakshi films) were kid oriented).
Blame 4Kids for censoring/changing the show for the audience that they were never meant to appeal.
This is fantastic anime that every mecha fan should (this anime was design for teenagers not kids). This anime show captured perfectly how the true wars look.
Ps. You should watch original Gundam Zeta.
Everyone dies... Yep... Thats sounds like Ideon, Gundam's predecessor...
Thanks for sharing this
You missed one death and it’s the greatest headshot in history
Do u happen to know what gundam series has a romeo and juliet type theme where a enemy young girl falls for a boy on her enemy side and they plan to see eachother again but the girl ends up being blown up in a gundam fight in space by that same boy's team. At the end the boy is alone looking at a sunset & his older bud that just killed his new gf is consoling him about the girl flaking , not knowing that he killed her because no one knew her identity. The boy thought she dumped him but she was just dead.
Man I’ve been wracking my brains for 2 days because what you described sounds exactly like something that must have happened in a series but not MSG or Zeta at least.but I can’t think if it’s 08th MS Team or what. Anyone?
It's been lingering on my mind for years, all I know is it was on toonami also. Ending credits is a girl singing a sad song.
I think you might be talking about MSG 0080 War in the Pocket. The roles were reversed though. It's the guy that dies
@@stevencruz5137 yep you are correct I think.
👍👍
Yes you think Amuro Killed his father only to find out he survived and has brain damage and is insane only for him to die very stupidly! Girin Father actually compared him to Hitler
I don’t think Zeon or it’s followers are like Nazis. Gihren sure but that’s about it. Each of the Zabis are entirely unique and think differently. What Nazis want and Zeon are entirely not the same. One wants independence (Like Americans and countless others) and other is full of racist genocidal Maniacs. Amuro does die in Origins.
The principality of Zeon are about aesthetically Nazi as you can get.
Gihren is basically the kinda guy that has portraits of great historical leaders and conquers throughout history. Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Napoleon Bonaparte, and for some reason he sees Adolf Hitler as no different and considers being told that he "follows in his footsteps" as a complement, as if he was told he followed in the footsteps of Alexander or Caesar. Similarly whether he's aware of Newtypes existing or not, he believes that the people who live in space are superior to those on the ground, cares nothing of them and would be just as happy to subjugate them as exterminate them.
Also Amuro dies in the original novel, not in "Gundam: The Origin" manga (despite Zeon's best efforts, even after the war they fail to assassinate him despite repeated attempts)
@@MichaelCasanovaMusic *coughs in Geara Zulu*
@@MichaelCasanovaMusic but aesthetic is the only thing about them that nazi.
@@mpo48 The creator of Gundam explicitly stated it was based on WWII with the Federation and Zeon being composites of the Allies and Axis respectively. Ramba Ral, for instance, is just Erwin Rommel with a different name. Later entries in the series developed both factions into their own thing, but yes, in the beginning, Zeon were just Space Nazis.
That´s a lie ! Char never betrayed anyone in his entire life, ever !
I can't compare it to GoTcha. There's nobody in that HBO series that I really like.
Gundam has never been a kids show. Most of the Gundam series are targeted at teens and young adults...
Original was literally created for and marketed towards children so they could sell toys. Tomino did what he could get away with, but it was absolutely a children's show. You also have to take into account that a lot of shows marketed to kids in 80s japan could be pretty hardcore.
Nope. It was a TEEN show aimed to sell GUNPLA and PLAMO. Plastic models are not toys for children. The official classification of the first show is SHONEN, which translates as meant for or aimed towards adolescent boys, not children....@@sanictheedgehog
The original show was created for and marketed towards adolescent boys
(Hence the official "Shounen" classification) to sell Gunpla and Plamo, plastic model robots and spacecraft. Those are not toys, they are quite more complex and require some skill to assemble. Facts... @@sanictheedgehog
Man... what happened to those Miharu's kid...
I just cant stand her death man. it just hit different. She was just a normal civilian caught up in war and spied the federation for some money. Not to mention she has her younger siblings under ten, who essentially have to live independently. This shit is just depressing as fuck.
Dead, Probably.
Spoiler alert.
The young brother experimented by Titans to create a Cyber-Newtype and died after doing test of prototype Psycho Gundam. While the sister became a hacker to help Kai's spy mission.
You gotta watch,
Gundam Origins.
Talk about murders lol
Wait until you watch Victory Gundam...
Victory gundam is basically slaughter of war
Wait until you see the whole universe get destroyed following the destruction of a GM... sorry, wrong franchise
or Iron Blooded Orphans, which is Victory Gundam's brutality but with better writing since it's not being deliberately sabotaged by Tomino in protest for the merchandising arm meddling in the show and forcing stupid designs for toy sales.
Subscribed to push you 1 closet to 1000
Worst thing is like in Gundam 00 when my fav characters die and the assholes I don't like survive
4:29 🤣
That's true. Everyone i like in Gundam died. I loved Gihren, but he was gone just like that. 🥲Always remember: War is terrible... if you lose.
... watch V Gundam. That one takes the fucking cake.
The ZACK-KU.
BTW Kai is Tsundere.
And then you get to Zeta Gundam
Thunderbolt and iron blooded orphans were the darkest of the whole franchise
Our new protagonist has killed 4 pilots while trying to escape a white robotic chicken
Ugggggg so brutal 😫😫😫🤮🤮🤮
You think this was brutal watch victory
...Zeon gased an entire side 1 colony to drop on earth. That's pretty Nazi.
Side 2. Totally Gihren's idea. Ramba Ral even gave him shit for it.
@@riskvideos thats the thing with zeon, gihren is the only one that has that kind of ideas, if you look at degwin zabis face in the scene where ghiren talks about nazis you can see the disappointment in his face, unfortunately for him though he cant do anything about it anymore and he gets killed along with revil when they arrange for a meeting to discuss peace negotiations, everyone in the zabi family was basically working against each other and that along with char helping them to kill each other caused their downfall
Efsf did nazi that coming.
bit of a gouf huh
Wait, like, everyone?
*gary oldman* EVERYONE!
It’s a pretty significant number of the named cast lol.
Zeon not only draws parallels from Nazi Germany, but also Imperial Japan. For instance, the Zeon military has run amuck and attacks anybody that even looks at them funny as they proclaim that it's in self-defense in the name of the ideology of Zeon Zum Deikun. If you know your history, that sounds an awful lot like Imperial Japan. Hell, the whole series could be summed up as "The Pacific Campaign in Space."
great points. i’ve always felt like zeon is more like imperial japan with a nazi skin since zeon was trying to free itself from federation influence like how japan was trying to free itself from western influence.
i also think the type of warfare mirrors the pacific war a lot more. mobile suit battles in space are essentially carrier battles. and there was also a lot of bitter jungle warfare.
It was a anime show geared towards Japanese kids not Americans.
Sieg zeon!
