Frankel and his final season: Newmarket racecourse gallop

  • Nine from nine in a remarkable racing career as a juvenile and a Classic-winning three-year-old, Frankel returns with a racecourse gallop on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket ahead of his final and highly-anticipated four-year-old season. He should be even better as a four-year-old, says trainer Sir Henry Cecil.
With the Group One Lockinge Stakes at Newmarket the first target of the season for Frankel - and having suffered an injury scare weeks previously with an overreach, his back leg cannoning into his front thanks to his impressively long stride - this racecourse gallop, a very public one, had symbolic worth as well as a practical one in simply preparing a racehorse for a seasonal debut one.
Frankel gallops on the Rowley Mile unde regular racecourse rider Tom Queally, with regular work companion Bullet Train and Jet Away, smart horses who are well capable of running to a level of 100+. Unsurprisingly, Frannkel just breezes past them.
Enjoy a true superstar, indisputably one of the finest in turf history, enjoy this racecourse workout with extended thoughts and commentary from Nick Luck and Graham Cunningham.

I was there for this & the crowd cleared a space round Henry, so he could focus on that gallop without distraction. We knew Henry was on his own last furlong by this time. I believe, absolutely, that Frankel, & his two brothers, gave Sir Henry at least another 3 years of life. Bless them.

Make no mistake Frankel is the greatest racehorse of all time. In the long history of the thoroughbred there have been many exceptional horses but I truly believe that there have been two who have transcended the words, exceptional and great. Arkle and Frankel.

Great footage. I enjoyed that nearly as much as I enjoyed watching him in the flesh at the Juddmonte. @ dressageandalusian, Farrh really struggled against this powerhouse at York and it was a no contest. Frankie was ecstatic to have come second to the best, and he admitted he was privileged to ride in the same race as Frankel.

Come on mate if everyone agreed to disagree on Yutube it would be a boring place to discuss racing! I've enjoyed this! What I will say with regards to CDA that was his favorite ground, he's won by massive margins on that ground and looked pretty invincible. Frankel quite clearly hated the ground and he only went a furlong out anyway still managing to stick nearly 2 lengths on the best mud loving 10f horse in the world. He done it easy and missed the break. Don't let the winning distance sway you

Dawn Approach is already race hardened and unlikely to imrpove much further I think. So yeah you're right. He always seems to hit a flat spot before he gets into gear and I wouldn't be too surprised to see him beaten by something in the guineas. Be it possibly Kingsbarn if he runs or Olympic Glory is my personal fancy.

  • @joshuadoherty562

Canford Cliffs was a 5 time group 1 winner too mate and Dream Ahead. He has beaten some top class rivals. They've won 53 g1's between them. St Nic is a Breeders Cup Turf winner 4x G1 winner etc. It's going to be difficult to have faced tougher opposition anywhere else mate. As for our next King, I don't think we'll see one of his or STS mould for some time. But I expect Camelot to improve next season and Dawn Approach looks a good one. 6 from 6 and 2 g1's as a 2 year old.

  • @GBeret83

I think you're spot on with the 10f races he'll likely try this season. The only one on the list I think questionable is the Prince of Wales's Stakes at the Ascot meeting. I'd be awfully surprised if Henry Cecil doesn't run him in the Queen Anne Stakes over a mile there instead of the Prince of Wales's Stakes at 10f?

Little brother Noble Mission handled 10f quite easily over Guineas weekend, and there's no reason to believe that Frankel won't handle middle distances, too, IMO. Just wish Henry Cecil would get this notion of him being just a miler out of his head. This horse is special, and he's bred to stay much further than a mile. I have little doubt whatsoever that if given the chance that Frankel would even stay 12f, and could become an Arc or King George winner if given the opportunity? But TJMO.

  • @GBeret83
    @GBeret83 Před 12 lety

I think so, too. Don't get me wrong, I dearly love Frankel. I think he's an amazing creature with the kind of ability that you just don't see in ordinary horses. With no disrespect whatsoever meant to Goldikova, Cecil is probably right. Frankel's probably been as good as Europe has seen at mile on turf since the days of Blushing Groom back in 1976-77. I know Blushing Groom made one hell of a stallion in America. But he's bred to stay much further than a mile, so bring it on and let's see!! LOL.

I've heard Sir Henry Cecil liken Frankel to Blushing Groom and Shergar at their best. Blushing Groom was also hell on wheels at 8f and less. He tried 12f once. But was beaten in the Epsom Derby by The Minstrel. Shergar was destined to be a 12f horse from day 1, and there were few if any better at the distance. If Frankel were retired today, most would remember him as the greatest turf miler ever. But until he stretches out, you can't compare him to horses like Shergar, Brigadier Gerard>>>

  • @joshuadoherty562

I'ts a shame we never seem to send our very best over to the BC or HK races. St Nic is probably a top 5 over 2400m behind Nathaniel, Danedream, Camelot and actually probably a few more. Excel is 2nd best miler after Frankel. Dundonel is nowhere near the stand out 2 year old. The Fugue isn't as good as snowfairy etc. There is a hurdler Galielo's cross or something running too I hear. He ran at Cheltenham festival (jumps) last march, should be intersting to see how he gets on.

  • @Tivashley

I think Frankel would beat Wise Dan in UK and reverse it in USA. Aussie horses run badly in USA and I doubt BC would have even won the sprint. I hope Excellerbration does well at stud but I am unsure if the Exceed and Excels will do as well Fastnet Rock's sons at stud. Gee Helsinge had a beauty at the last sales by Redoutes Choice. With All too hard running second at3 to Green Park in the Cox , She is capable of throwing like Eight Carat. She also has a full sister to BC on the ground.

To be fair he ran 2 weeks ago on heavy ground. He was never going to win that. With the best horse America have had for about 10 years was running too. He was only 2 lengths down on that. That's considering travel, and lack of recovery from a heavy race just 2 weeks before. Not to mention he's never gone lefty before. Frankel beaten a fresh Excelebration by 6 and 11 lengths. He was only beaten by 2 to 3 here with all that on him by the best American horse since Ghostzapper! It speaks volumes

He isn't a 12f horse, so why would he run in the arc, it's a bit like saying BC should run in the cox plate. What would he prove by jumping on a plane.
