  • I am SO excited to show you the VERY FIRST Kimbo camper ever produced! There are only 4 on the road at the time of this video being posted, so this is an exclusive look at someone who is actually living full time out of their Kimbo. This is the lightest hard sided truck camper that I have ever seen, and feels huge inside compared to its outside footprint. I hope you enjoy taking a quick peak inside, and comment below what you think!

      The build may fail but this is made way better than most campers you're pricing this against.
      Tons of campers with wood or wood products in them fill with a little moisture then that causes more leaks to happen.
      This camper may not be water tight forever but you can just fix the seal and dry it out.
      If wood built campers get water in them, it rots then you have too scoop all that out and rebuild.

    One of the reasons I'm not crazy about the 4 wheel camper is the lack of insulation in the soft side that leads to significant condensation issues, especially when you camp in colder climates. This hard side camper would solve this but I'd be curious what is the insulation they use? What is the R-value of the walls? Pick up campers aren't stealth enough for me but this is a cool design!

    • @Down2Mob
      @Down2Mob  Před 5 lety

      You are correct, I have a pop up and it does get some condensation. But i was just camping in some snow for a week and it honestly held the heat in very well for a soft side. Hard side will always win though for insulation! That's a good question, I'm not sure what the R value is but I'd like to find out! they use some pretty good closed cell phone in between the aluminum panels

    I just checked out the Kimbo yesterday. They are super cool inside and out. I'm deciding between the 4 wheel pop up camper or the kimbo. They are coming out with a 8 foot bed this summer. Yes it cost more then others but the craftsmanship Is superior to most of the campers I've looked at.

      @Down2Mob  Před 5 lety +3

      Very cool Patricia! I would say if you dont need the clearance of the pop up, go with the kimbo! And in the same sense if you want to really push it offroad and have the truck in some precarious situations, I'd go with the pop up. I'm excited to see the 8 foot bed when it comes out. And as far as price, I'm not sure why anyone would think 23k is a lot of money for a brand new, hard sided camper. Especially one built almost entirely from aluminum. imagine - it is a cold and rainy day. the sound of the rain is deafening and the stove is causing condensation which is adhering to the "suede" liner inside. all in the name of saving weight, i guess. maybe there is a reason why they have only sold 4 😂

Besides that, although 23k is a lot of money for most folks that is still in range for fair market prices when considering brand new campers. Also if I understand correctly the Kimbo is constructed of either stainless steel or aluminum and these type of campers tend to hold their value for decades. Besides using high quality materials these are also hand built by a very small production company. So haters can say what they want man but I think you've got yourself a cool rig, one that only a few can call their own.

    The problem I see is the heater is mounted too high. I found out in my trailer that putting a heater on the table was convenient and out of the way, but it doesn't get warm below it. You'd think as the air warmed up it would heat up the air lower as more air was heated, but not in my experience, in a 17 foot trailer.

    Looks awesome, but in that tiny of space you’re better off with the Dickinson wood stove instead of the Dickinson propane stove... humidity!
    And me building out my own handicap bus for less than that while providing me double the space (and still no cost of the truck) makes more sense FOR ME..... to each their own of course, but since I plan on living in mine for three years while hitting all the provinces and states in Canada and USA, then all the countries of central and South America, the extra space in the bus would be more than a necessity....
    Nice looking rig, though!

    • @Down2Mob
      @Down2Mob  Před 5 lety

      I love your comment Rick, because your setup works best for YOU! Good point on the humidity.. I'd rather have the wood stove too. More effort to get wood but cheaper and more off grid feeling lol.
      Your build sounds sweet and I LOVE how affordable bus builds can be. But for ME, I want 4x4. I am willing to sacrifice lots of space for a 4x4, capable rig. Unfortunately, that also costs more money and means you need a solid camper similar to the kimbo that isnt going to fall apart. It's always a compromise! @Down2Mob  Před 5 lety

      @@mitchwinder1204 I'm not sure how that poor soul who built you that camper could feed his family and run a legitimate business that pays taxes and such. Was this a legitimate business that built your camper? To form a legitimate business that builds aluminum campers in the USA for $23k would be a hell of a challenge. But hey, if it can be done, why dont you try? I apologize if I come off harsh. That is not my intention. But let's be real. Labor costs are at an all time high, people whining to get $15 an hour helped get us here. Besides the fact that things NEED to cost more money each year. Inflation. Anyways... if it's so easy, do it!! I dont think it's that easy, but I've also had a couple failed small businesses

      Down2Mob Overland No need to be so defensive. And no, I have no interest in ‘doing it myself.’ I’m already well-entrenched in a career. I realize that truck campers carry a higher price because it’s a rather niche market. But I’m also of the opinion that the whole ‘overland’ thing is trendy right now, and I think that drives much of this. I stepped outside the segment and had a very nice custom aluminum trailer built by a company in Michigan that’s been in business 25 years whose only business is cargo, snowmobile, and motorcycle, trailers that can be custom-outfitted. And they’re seeing a lot of crossover business. I didn’t respond to this video to argue. I simply offered my opinion as to the cost. I personally think it’s excessive based on what I saw. That said, I wish the brand well. The design is unique. Cheers!
