  • There have been a few good comments that are worth responding to here. First, this was done outside in a well-ventilated area. Second, it's been recommended to separate any copper coins from nickel-clad to prevent copper plating transfer, although this didn't seem to cause any problem when redeeming them in a coin machine. It may simply not be worth cleaning pennies based on the cost of the cleaning solution. If you do clean them, watch for pitting since the solution will start eating away at any with surface damage.
I should also mention this is a bit of a "Hail Mary" way of salvaging coins for deposit. All the coins used were pulled out of the trash since they were considered too poor for bank deposit. I definitely would not recommend this for coins worth more than face value.
