I wonder how the alternating pets and kicks effected the Chao development. I know throwing them against the wall was a good start if you wanted them to be *Dark* .

It’s dependant on the faction. If a hero character begins to abuse their chao, the chao will start to become a dark chao out of rebellion. The same applies in reverse with the dark characters.
Another thing to note is that the chao will also act emotionally to every character. You could see it a bit in the video when she picked up the chao as tails and it began struggling. If they dislike the character enough, they won’t like being touched and may throw occasional tantrums. If they are abused even further, they will begin to shudder and even softly cry periodically when you are around. This can eventually lead to them actively running away every time they see you out of fear of being hurt. This is character specific though, so if you approach the chao with another character, they will act normally
There is actually a hidden stat in the game for happiness and it can affect how your chao reincarnates. After they reach 5 years old, the chao will reincarnate and start their life over again (can happen a max of 3 times before dying, unless you make them into an angel/devil/chaos chao the third time around, which makes them immortal). If their happiness isn’t high enough, the chao won’t come back.
I might be wrong about this last one, but I think your chao can also run away back to the forest or begin to bully other chao if you treat them badly enough?
