That was fast as hell, thanks for this! This faux engine noise has been driving me nuts ever since I bought the car a month ago, even during the test drive with 18 miles on the ODO it sounded phony.... Thanks big dog!
I've had my BRZ for three days and was somewhat concerned about disconnecting the "Active" Sound System. But after three days and putting up with the obnoxious grinding noise I figured was the "Active Sound System", i finally took the plunge today. I followed this video and even me, a mechanical misfit was able to unplug it. Geez....what a difference! Take all the sounds a 4 cylinder boxer makes then compress it into some crappy, tinny cheap speaker and that's what you get rid of. Now, I can actually hear the real engine sounds. Take my word, do it and you will finally hear what this motor really sounds like. Thanks to Eddie Lepiz for sharing the info. Next is the exhaust system. Just can't quite figure out which one. Shame you can't line them all up so you could see a comparison.
Does it sound better or like a normal car?
@@VERT1220You still hear the nice boxer engine but it's not this grinding noise coming through some cheap speaker. I would recommend doing it!
replying 2 years later but what exhaust did you end up going with? I just got my own 2024 gr86 and I'm trying to decide which exhaust I want for my car as well.

It's off by default and is only enabled when in sports mode.
It should’ve been like that with the manual mode. And no need to justify! AT holds more power 😉

This one was quick and easy and I had to get it out 🤙🏼
Just unplugged mine. I didn't do anything with the glove box, also didn't use a screwdriver, just stuck my finger into the slot on the bottom of the side panel and popped it off.
I tried it with and without, I think I like it better with the speaker on. Really pairs well with my MXP catback. Great informative videos for others though, good job!
Page 403 on the owners manual says that the option can be toggled off by dealership if you request for it. Something you can ask for before delivery or during regular service

@@EddieLepiz A+ for trying. What exhaust system are you ending up with and why? There's about four choices I've seen videos on. I like HKS but the distributor tells me about 3 month wait. MXP RS I also like. Have you seen the clear side marker lights they're now selling? I like it a lot better than the orange....So you're saying after the fake noise delete there wasn't much difference inside the car or not enough to capture on camera?
Camera just wasn’t capturing it but for sure a difference, less cabin drone, the exhaust noises are actually coming from the back of the car now. And not too sure, I might go Ark Performance purely based on the build quality.

do you have a similar solution for a Volvo XC90 MY2023 which has the same annoying exhaust and motor sounds. It is an expensive car and pretends to be very quiet, it is in fact not at all when the engine runs, electrical driving it is indeed very quiet.
Is there any other side effect from unplugging that cable?
You get a higher chance at picking up girls

Does the glove box even have to come out? It looks like you were able to get to everything from that side access panel.
No not at all, some people just have bigger hands so they wouldn’t be able to squeeze in there. It’s just if you want more room to work

In what year models is this the thing to do? I have a 2017 and it has a pipe that going into the cabin through the firewall, I will disconnect that and plug the holes, do I have to do this as well? Thanks

What was the point of removing the glove box?
On right hand drive cars it's not the same. The clip isn't on this side so I couldn't just unplug it like in the video. Dealer even said they couldn't turn it off since it was part of the exhaust.
Well would the unit be on the left side instead
@@EddieLepiz I mean the sound control unit is on the left side of the car and I can get access to it wasy. But the cable connector clip is not accessible since it is facing the right of the car and blocked by the glove box. I tried removing the glove box trim to get access but was scared I would break something.
The sound doesn't bother me so far. Does the sound when listening to music sound better after disconet
Ever since I heard about the piped in engine noise I've been wondering how to disable that! My GR86 is in transit to the dealer so I'm just waiting on a phone call. I'm thinking about bringing a screwdriver with me when I pick it up so I can disable it right in front of them before I drive off, lol.
Is there any way to disable the seat belt chime and have you tested the first gen pedal dance yet?
Pedal dance doesn’t work. Seat chime is turn on the car all the way but not running. Quickly unbuckle and buckle your seat belt 30 times and then reset the car and boom
Next video how to install the STI CATBack exhaust to get that actual sound without the speakers.
I'm probably going to end up doing this because the active sound is drowning out my phone calls and no one can hear me well since the sound is coming out of the speaker instead of the engine and the exhaust.
I don't have this car but I'll save this later when I buy a secondhand brz in like 5 or 10 years.

So it is like last gen! I remember looking into it back when 2015 rolled around, they had a hole leading to the engine bay to create more engine noise for the car, people would plug it of course to nullify the sound.

I did this without touching the glovebox at all lol. Just pop off the side panel and unplug cable, and place it back on.
Would this also work on Gen 1?
1st gens have an intake tube sound generator in the engine bay. just yt intake tube sound generator delete and find the best way you prefer.

But why disable the active sound? It's meant to be there and to improve the sound... It does sound way better in videos with it than without it too...
It sounds pretty good in the low end, but it is completely obnoxious and whiny sounding at high RPMs.
You could literally jst turn it off 😅
Why so boring, make any cool sound like Zonda.
