  • Gordon Parks, the photographer behind American Gothic, is one of the 20th century's most famous American photographers. Parks was a photographer, poet, musician, writer, activist - the epitome of a renaissance man. The work he created over his six decade career was profoundly significant and far reaching. Out of everything he did though - from his glamour photography for Vogue, directing Hollywood’s first Blaxploitation movie Shaft, to his multiple books - perhaps his most important contribution to society were the photographs he took that laid bare America’s system of racial segregation in the 1940s and 50s. Not only did his photography document the black experience during that time in America, it helped to spur on the subsequent civil rights movement.

I was fortunate to be able to attend a talk by Mr Parks in Boston sometime in the mid to late seventies I believe. My impression was that he was a true gentleman. Around that time I also attended a small gathering in Durham, NH that was addressed by Mary Ellen Mark. Good times. Thanks for this video.

Thanks for the comment William! I'm very jealous you got to see Gordon Parks in person, as well as Mary Ellen Mark. She's definitely on my list for a future video - so stay tuned!

I knew the name, I never knew the man - thanks for scratching the surface for me. Time for me to look further here, his photography is so poignant and humane.

@@thegeniusofphotography LOL - I've always mocked people who will reply to a video "I'm first!", but this is quite a distinction haha. You deserve all the positive reviews for your type of content here, you've done a fine job w/ Mr Parks. Thank you.
