- Jay Maisel is known for color photography that uses light and gesture to create images for advertising, editorial, and corporate communications. His work also appears in books and in private and corporate collections. His honors include the American Society of Media Photographers’ Lifetime Achievement and Photographer of the Year awards, the International Center for Photography’s Infinity Award, and induction into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame. A graduate of Cooper Union and Yale University, Jay continues his education by teaching. This is his 16th year teaching at the Workshops. His web site is jaymaisel.com.
A great photographer, and an even better teacher. I took workshops from him and Gregory Heisler the same year at Maine Media. I never learned so much in short a period of time. It stays with me, each time I click the shutter. Thanks guys.
I Studied with Jay back in 1983 at the Maine Photographic Workshops. That week changed the course of my life. As it happens that was 36 years and a couple of weeks ago. This was a year or two before Reid started the Santa Fe Workshops. For me to say I am still learning from Jay is a profound understatement.
Just found out about Jay Maisel and I think he will be my favorite photographer soon.
I also love the way he talks about photography.

Most of my friends and family don't understand, and have even ridiculed my obsession with photography. It's nice to hear someone explain it so simply. Very inspiring.
So sad I am a Canadian documentary photographer in Santiago Dominican Republic. It must be tough .. what and where would I be without my photography. I study all the best in order to be better .
dont ever let anyone inhibit your dreams and aspirations. Protect them and never apologize for your love of the arts. Seek people out to go shoot with! I am in similar boat right now where sadly, even loved ones belittle my aspirations because they are data driven people and don't understand simply doing a task without getting paid for it. It really is disheartening but it should serve as motivation to prove those f&^#ers wrong!
Yep, the problem isn’t us, the problem is they just can’t see what we see and therefore they can’t understand. A true photographer is always looking for that special light just like a junkie is looking for his next high.

Inspiring from someone born same year I was! Spent a week studying with him at Santa Fe Workshops 1996, and his honesty re student images was blunt and accurate.
Be your own worst critic!
"I don't have any particular thing I go out to shoot and part of what I try to teach the classes are to go out empty, to have the real joy of not having something to shoot."
Notice this is the exact opposite of the "project mentality" that photographers so often preach. Nothing wrong with a project, but to actually go out and let visually interesting images "arrive" rather than searching form them is a highly underrated aspect of photography.
Project mentality as you put it, the down side is it can result in follow directions way of doing things, as my way of putting it. If the project calls for an object or a topic, then the object will be gathered and placed in front of the camera and shot. There won't be much seeing a photo. The way of all these "influencer's" of a pretty girl and an outfit. Gather them together, and they are photographed. If there's a new video or if they are saying they are trying something different, they get a different girl and/or a different outfit. And if they are really going out there, they've learned to use a soft box with a pretty girl and an outfit.
I would say that you are still searching for photos if you are letting them arrive. Charlie Rose interviewed a photographer (can't remember his name) and he said "the art of photography is the art of paying attention." And going out empty you learn to look beyond the obvious, learn to see when there's a photo of the ordinary or hidden in the ordinary. Ernst Haas is known for saying he's not interested in seeing new things. He's interested in seeing things in a new way.
I've been to a couple of his lectures and he completely changed my world. Thank you for another great talk.

"It is so much easier to take pictures if you have your camera with you"...Why don't I always have my camera with me!?! Because it has become more a job than pleasure. I will from now on. Not taking photos for myself has almost destroyed my love of photography.
That s true. I was also thinking of becoming part time photographer but i stay a lifelong amateur.

Stunning images. Like you I go out not knowing what my goal is. If I like it I'll take it.
Simple as that. Think I might suffer if I was told to do a project on some article. You can teach people how to use a camera but you cant teach them in the moment frame.
That's up to you in how you see it. It's not easy.
