My mom was telling me there was this doctor who had a lion back in the 70's when I was a knee high and other people would never go near it.. Here I am of course in the cage with the thing trying to feed it she says her heart stopped until the big thing took the food and started licking me. She said it got out once, someone complained and the towns people all hunted it down and killed it even though it didn't hurt anyone.. It just got out. But as my mom says, this lion was huge.

@@evanlecours5612 Agreed, apparently there’s a tactic for each type of bear you encounter: play dead for a grizzly, and pray to God if it’s either a black bear or polar bear
UPDATE: If it’s a black bear, realistically you can get away from it by asserting dominance (E.g., yelling at it, slowly backing away, throwing rocks at it) - it should leave you alone and flee. Just try not to be too aggressive or too quiet around it, otherwise it’s animals instincts are going to detect you as their next meal (especially if food has been scarce that time of the year).
Hope this family made it back safe with any harm...be prepared when out hiking esp in bear trails ...esp with kids...this is scary situation😮

@@jamescool2243 That is the right thing to do if you are dealing with a brown bear. For a black bear the best thing to do would be to get away but if that isn't possible it is better to try to scare it off/fight back. If it's a polar bear the best thing to do is probably just accepting death.

Millions of people take billions of hikes per year, with only single digit bear attacks. Its so much more dangerous to take your kid to school in a motor vehicle. Perhaps it just seems frightening if you're unfamiliar with it?
And to the idea a firearm is the answer...you'd have to be danger close, and under the worst conditions of your life, land several nearly perfectly accurate shots. A gun is just a psychological blankie. Best defense is just knowledge, and scent proof packs!

They did well protecting their kids. Glad it ended safely for everyone, including the bear. “Can we play dead now?” had me laughing but also shows that they did great at keeping the children calm and not panicking during the encounter.
