For this "Two Minute Tying" tutorial, I am tying the X-Caddis, a pattern developed by Craig Mathews that represents the emerging or cripple-caddis. This pattern can be adapted to represent your natural caddis, though I have also varied it by adding a cdc underwing. This pattern is one I recommend when fishing in pressured waters, due to its realistic imitation of the natural.

You can also just tie in a cdc feather by the tip at the bend of the hook and wrap the cdc up to the thorax area while stroking back the longer fibers. This will simultaneously dub your fly AND give it underwings and legs, and it will save time making the two minute time more feasible. Cool fly! Basically a cdc elk hair caddis with a tail.
Great idea with the cdc, Scott; thanks for sharing! The tailing fibers represent the trailing shuck, which definitely help to separate this fly from others. Thanks again...TC

I like the cdc underwing. You should try a dubbing loop and add the cdc to your dubbing. Cdc traps air bubbles and might be worth a try in the body as well.

Thanks for the comments, Matt; I've had a lot of luck with that underwing, possibly bc those fibers can appear to represent caddis legs. Have you already tried cdc in a dubbing loop for a similar pattern? Do you trim the lengthy fibers after applying the loop?

This pattern is just great during a caddis hatch.. We see the olive first up here in NE Pa and adding the shuck just increases fish to eat it...Thank You for the tutorial..

Have already broken the 2015 dry fly ice...Some midge and little black stone flies
that the fish were eating. Also had a good hatch of Psuedocloeon Blue Winged Olives between size 24- 26 but the fish were not eating them....Just as well...Too damned small for me to fish

Its been rough here too... Winter Midge in Jan and Feb I was doing okay... I love fishing Midge patterns...March was dead... No early stones...Not even consistent Midge hatches... You're correct, caddis don't have tails. Did you see the first minute of this video? There is an explanation for the "shuck," which I believe you are calling the tail. That material is used to represent the emerging caddis (versus the adult that you may be used to tying)...thanks for checking!

Tim...on a CDC / deer hair caddis fly do you prefer a gel or powder floatant?
