Fun fact: the Edward Scissor Hands character portrayed by Johnny Depp was based on Robert Smith’s look

I was living in London in the mid 80's for a bit when the Cure was quite popular, many of the kids in London would wear their hairstyles in the same fashion as their favorite musical artist, I was an American working cash in hand doing construction, one of the guys on the crew wore his hair just like Robert Smith, the lead singer of this band, my best mate wore his hair like Simon Le Bon from Duran Duran, good times.

Robert Smith (lead singer of the cure and mostly writes their songs) is one smart dude, because he has always worn wild make up on all their music video's, and even concerts, he can still walk around in public with most people not recognizing him "without the make up". From what I've read about Roberts romantic relationships he has had the same woman in his life for over 30 years and has written a lot of his songs about her and their relationship. "Love cats" from the Cure is one of my favorites by them..

I've not heard this song since the 90s and it's good to be reminded of it. I saw The Cure twice in concert, the last being the Disintegration tour and it was amazing!

One of my favorites by The Cure- it was my introduction to them back when I was 14 and they quickly became one of my favorite bands ever. I never put a lot of thought into the meaning behind the song except thinking it was about not wanting to end a relationship with someone.
If you like Love Song, give Pictures of You a listen someday. It’s slow and melodic.

Great suggestion. (I hope someday he can hear all of the album 'Disintegration.')

Great reaction, as usual!😊♥ Robert Smith did play guitar on this recording. And I've seen live performances of this song in which he was playing guitar (a 12-string, in at least some performances). He's an amazing guitarist (and a multi-instrumentalist). Often he and Porl Thompson both play guitar on Cure songs...their official videos don't always show that.
Edited to add: For me the lyrics are very evocative, but I've never tried to figure out exactly what they're about. I don't hear the lines like "yesterday I got so old..." as being literal, the way that commenter did. I think this song could be about any transitional time (after a loss or breakup, etc...especially one that wasn't your own decision) when things are uncertain, when you are sad but there is still some hope. A very bittersweet and beautiful (and also fun) song, to me.

True, Robert is rarely ever shown playing his guitar in their music video's..

Growing up when this came out; see it as the start of something. The goth Bauhaus scene transition to Rave culture.

The happiest goths on the block. They started as a pop-punk/post punk band, got into psychedelic soundscapes and accidently helped codify goth along the way. But there was always a fun and whimsical side to them as well. There is 2 singles collections worth picking up as an introduction, "Standing on the Beach" and "Galore" (together coving 20 years or so of their career, Galore picking up where teh first collection finished) which should give you a very good idea of what they are about.

I always thought those graphic socks poring out of the piano at the start were just colourful representations of notes (they are quaver shaped).

That's odd. Good song. This was released July 1985 but has that distinct 1982 Electronic sound. That's without question.
