Hatching Quail Eggs From The Grocery Store

  • You've probably heard of people trying or simply just wondering if you could hatch eggs from the grocery store. Turns out quail eggs from the store can hatch birds. Watch as I do just that using a homemade incubator.
    I started with 10 eggs, had 3 hatch, and ended up with 2 happy healthy birds! Sadly one of them did not make it to adulthood, but that's just how nature is sometimes. I also did not mention that the light bulb I used to heat up the incubator was on a dimmer switch so I could control how warm it got.
    I really hope to make CZcams videos detailing my hobbies and projects more often. I'm just going through a lot at the moment. Fun fact: this is my most edited video. This video took several afternoons for me to edit, mainly just because I had so much footage I recorded and things I wanted to say. If you're wearing headphones, you might even be able to tell I went the extra mile and removed background noise from my voice recordings. If you liked the video and want to see more of my projects go to my twitter. (There's not much on it but hey my posts will be like a small surprise) or just don't, that's fine too. / hobojoe357

      Jusr showed my sister this cause her roommate has baby chickens ( not hatched at home but very small ) and she didn’t put that Little In with the rocks so they don’t drown one of them got a Tupperware bowl knocked over on them and died two days later from the injuries I guess 😭😭so I told her the water bowl HAD to be small and rocks or marbles placed in cause of potential drowning ! Your video is soooo good !

    One thing to remember if you try this, is quails are social so you really need to get at least two to hatch. If you only get one to hatch, the single quail is not going to be happy alone. There are a few quail breeds that can live alone but they are not typically used in commercial quail farms, where you'd get these eggs.

    This is really cool! I have so many questions, aren’t eggs sold in grocery stores unfertilized? Aren’t they irradiated for food safety? Wouldn’t the refrigerated temps they’re kept in kill the embryo quickly? We hatched ducks in the past and find this fascinating but know nothing about quails.

    I hatched 18 Quail so far from eggs I bought right out of the fridge at an Asian Supermarket. It’s hit or miss. It depends on whether the company is careful to cull the males from their flock. I tried hatching eggs from three different companies including the one you used. I only had one hatch from that company. I had as many as NINE hatch out of a pkg of 15 eggs from another California company. None at all hatched from a pkg of 18 eggs from a Canadian supplier.
    Update: I ended up hatching 24 of the Quail Eggs I bought out of the fridge at Asian markets! And I was finally able to hatch 8 Red Golden Pheasant Eggs in a Brinsea Maxi Advance ll Incubator. I’ve successfully hatched hundreds of Button Quail in my Brinsea Incubators. They work very well.

    What did you end up doing with them did you keep them? I have about ~50ish coturnix quail rn that I breed to sell chicks as well as for eggs, they’re fun to watch, and pretty easy to take care of especially just two like you have. They might be messy and little but hey at least they’re more useful than a dog or cat since they’re both female and they will lay quail eggs for you to eat! If you still have them try giving them some pine shavings in the bottom of the cage to keep the cage from getting messy to quickly, it’s super cheap you can buy a huge amount for like 5 dollars at the feed store.

      I successfully hatched quail chicks using home made incubator (light bulb). Hatch rate is low maybe 10%-20%. I figured out that the eggs were fresh by visiting the store every couple days, and watching the expiration dates on the package. When the expiration date changes, I know the eggs are fresh, stocked in last couple of days and buy the eggs for incubation. I found expiration date is dated about 2 months + 10 days from day that eggs were freshly stocked in the store.

      I don't remember exactly, but I think it was 40 watts. It's far more important that you have a dimmer switch on it though. If you just have it on its normal full brightness, you would definitely have too high of a temperature unless you had a real big incubator.

    • @springer-qb4dv
      @springer-qb4dv Před 2 lety +1

      @@hobojoe357 Yes I used dimmer switch too and was able to hatch quail chicks. But it's too time consuming to check on the temp every few hours and adjust if necessary. Temperature seem to drift for no reason, so I think it's better to add a digital temperature control in Fahrenheit. There are cheap digital controls (5V) that's sold on amazon that can control a light bulb and hold to within 1 degree F, so that should do the job.

      No, but at about 4 days of incubating, you can take the eggs out one at a time and shine a flashlight through it and see the baby forming inside. It's called candling. If they're only a day old, they're likely still living off nutrients from their yolk. I took the wild game feed, and ground it into a fine powder and put it in a small dish in their incubator. Some people say you have to teach them it's food, but I found they naturally just start poking around and figure it out. You must make sure it's wild game feed though. That has a higher protein content that quail need. There is also a chick specific mix for wild game which I used, but I'm not sure how much that matters.

      You mean chicken eggs? It'd only be possible if you used free range chickens, but the odds don't sound too good. Quail and chickens are raised differently, so it's less likely the chickens get a chance to mate. Might work ok though, I've never tried chicken eggs.

      I no longer have them. I really miss them though. If I'm ever rich enough to move out, I'll hatch more and build a bigger cage for them. Quail eggs are also delicious in hot pots.
