It works fine to chop and use the top of the new bought onion, and only plant the root end. Greens grow fine from 1/2" thick of the root end. If you wait long enough, it will even turn into a new onion.

You can cut the root end off, use the onion as you wish, replant the root end and grow a whole new onion, so...🤷♀️🤷♀️

Instead of waste tasty red onions, I recommend to grow tree onion (Allium × proliferum). It's a perennial onion, the leave are tasty and it the plant build a lot of tasty aerial tiny bulblets. The plant is very easy to reproduce because you just have to plant the bulblets in the soil.
I have the problem of too many tree onions! I can't believe how prolific they are and they taste like a real onion. Not the awful, watery, sweet tasteless onions sold in supermarkets.

I think this is a nice little video. I also think that you could’ve started with just the bottom 3/4 of an inch or so of onion, and let the roots produce new onions.
If you allow the green onion stems to grow flour, it will produce seed for next year‘s onions. That’s a good thing to know when seeds are hard to find and expensive when you do find them.

I just did this last week and it died after 3-4 days...it was growing better on my counter top lol🤷🏽♂️

@@tjgrafiks I do that too but after a while it gets water logged and slimy even though I change the water often. Now I let them grow in the water once then I plant in soil. From being in the water, the onion grew great roots then grew frantic when potted.
But spring onions and regrow them. Most of the time they still have roots.

These are green onions. You used a big onion to grow green onions when you simply can cut off the end of green onions, put the bottom section in water and it will produce more green onions.

Whenever you cut into the onion leave a small portion of the bottom of the onion then you can put it in water also whenever you see the green stem on the top of the onion do the same
Cover the bottoms more let them get a bulb and you have more seeds.

So I just found a red onion in my bin that had already started to sprout leaves or shoots and the red onion is soft so should I just put it in dirt or do I have to cut the top off
