Grace White, KHOU - HOUSTON - It was an emotional scene at Houston's Bush Airport, as dozens of special needs children from China arrived to meet their foster families, and hope for a permanent home.
Like every mom would, Audrey Shook spotted Lucy, 6, right away and from the moment they first met, there was an instant connection.
"Hi! Hi! I'm momma," said Shook, as Lucy appeared to repeat the word "momma" back to her.
It's an end to a journey that started long ago for the Texas couple.
"We started dating in high school and I knew back then I wanted to adopt from China," said Shook.
However, when the couple got pregnant, they put the idea on hold. Nine years later, came a video of Lucy. They fell in love with the little girl, who was in an orphanage a world away.
"I've always loved kids with special needs, especially kids with down syndrome," said Shook.
"These are the kids that are unwanted, they are the kids nobody else wants, they've been sitting on lists for their entire life or sitting in an orphanage," said Shannon Phillips, with Great Wall China Adoptions.
The agency asks families to host special needs orphans for four weeks, but the Shooks already made up their minds.
"She's beautiful and sweet and we just can't wait for her to be ours," said Shook. They couple has already started the process to adopt Lucy.
"We don't see it as we are going to help her, we see it as she's going to help us with our lives," said Brent Shook, Lucy's soon-to-be father.

Unfortunately, there are lots of us... and we're not all kids anymore.
They probably went through hell to adopt that girl. I bet a lot of people would adopt but the government doesn’t want them to do they make the process so difficult.

When Lucy says Mama, it's so heartwarming.
Its like she didn't really believe it herself...."mama?" and then mama picked her up and hugged her, she knew then...she was home and mama and daddy loved her.
But its not her mum. She should say no im not your mum but im going to be there for you now and i will be just like a mum to you now. Lets not confuse the kid
@Tiff is Climbing mountains no she should call her by her name. When she is older she can decide for herself. I understand why they r doin it but i dont think its right. I knew a woman who found out she was adopted when she was 31. She doesnt speak to her adopted parents anymore because they hid the truth. All im saying is that they should be totally transparent and tell the kid the truth from the start. It doesnt mean that the relationship would be different and it could make it stronger by building trust. U lot r a bunch of idiots who dont have a clue

I cried when she said mama, but when i heard the father say "...we feel like she's going to bless our lives" i felt comfort because i know they would never see her as a burden, only as a blessing. Truly heartwarming. Heaven has a place for people like that.
That look on mom's face in that moment she picks her up,She is holding her and smelling that sweet chid smell and she knows at that moment,that second there is NOTHING she will not do for that child.Mom's out there you know what I'm trying to say.God is so good.God Bless this happy home.

This makes me so happy, so many people adopt and foster for the wrong reasons. You could see they were genuine.
It makes me cry. Think about being a little kid with a disability. Life already is hard. And then you get chased around by people and nobody wants you. I don't even want to imagine.
It is so great of this family to adopt those children. Those children are the biggest blessing ❤

They truly are an amazing family with incredible hearts, hopefully they can continue to live a long & happy life with all of their beautiful children ❤️

God bless them and their beautiful family. I am 32 years old, working as a nurse, and preparing myself to adopt (a) child(ren) here in the U.S. and/or abroad, and the child(ren) will be from wherever God places it on my heart. While most of the comments here are positive ones I wish some people with the other comments would understand that adoption is a wonderful process whether it is done in the States and/or from another country.
It makes breathing a bit easier when there are people like you in the world❤️

I was one of the luckier ones - abandoned at a day old on the streets of a small beach town in China and adopted by a family in America at 13 months old. I’m glad to see that everyone has a chance at a forever family

We couldn't afford an international adoption, even though we wanted to. 26 years ago, we were able to adopt a baby girl from our state. She's my precious miracle. Now, I'm a granny!
