Potatobreeding #86 tetraploid diploid potato crossing

  • I would like to breed a potato with a very dark yellow flesh colour. It's not all that easy, I'll try to explain it. The potato has 12 different chromosomes. Most varieties are tetraploid, which means that the chromosomes are fourfold. So a total of 48 chromosomes. That is what makes potato breeding so complicated. Now the very dark yellow flesh color is in the diploid potato, and I want to get it into the tetraploid. So now I want to cross the tetraploid with the diploid. Normally this does not work. The sex cells, egg cells and pollen contain only half the number of chromosomes. The sex cells of the tetraploid are diploid. And of the diploid is that haploid . But sometimes this goes wrong. During meiosis of the diploid, sometimes no division takes place, and there are also eggs and pollen that remain diploid. If I then make a cross, I get seeds that are tetraploid. But then I'm not there yet, I'll explain that next time.
