Lyrics:
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows
And everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows
And everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows
And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes

Everybody knows Leonard Cohen was the best.
Everybody knows!!
salute to all those who are listening this song in 2024,
salute to the machines listening in 3024,
When I heard this in 1989 in a movie called Pump up the volume. I didn't have the words or an understanding of how the world works, but I felt the truth of it...the DICES are loaded/OLD BLACK JOE is still picking Cotton/a meter on my bed that will disclose..WOW!!!!
Who cares
I am. It's 1st May 2024. The words of this song are timeless because they are 100% truth!
😮
35 years and this song still resonates the truth of the world.
"Everybody knows you've been discreet" is one of the best lyrics ever written.
Yep, and reminds me of this quote: "Three People Can Keep A Secret, If Two Of Them Are Dead."
Definitely ❤😊
@@johnnypastrana6727 "A secret is only a secret as long as it's kept"

Every line in this song speaks volumes. So profound and so deep in such a raw, lyrical and groovy-anthem kind of way. A true poet. A true artist. A poet of the highest order. Just like Bob Dylan. Sometiemes more than Dylan himself. And everybody knows that Leonard Cohen was/is one of the greatest songwriters/singers/poets of our time. A timeless sage who is a seductively mystic and dark and soothing.
Man and woman a shining artifact of the past, every knows

Crazy how a forgotten song can jolt memories you had forgotten also. Love this song
A man of 40 listening to this will understand this song painfully more so than a man of 20 . Every line is a truth bomb.
And a 60 year old will have an even deeper understanding, but will be less disillusioned than the 40 year old.

The song is directly influenced by the time period it came from, so someone who was aware of the world around them in the late 80's/early 90's would have a better appreciation of what this song is about.

And everybody knows that the plague is coming. Everybody knows that it's moving fast
This song should be the new national anthem.
The song tells such a relatable story. All his philosophizing about the cruelty of life ultimately has roots in a deeply personal betrayal.
I first heard this when I was 16 in Pump Up the Volume and it still resonates with me not just with the struggles I had in high school, but with all that has happened since then. and I'm sure it still strikes a chord with everybody and more with the recent events that have left us either crumbling or banding together for a change. thank you, Leonard for your poetry and your music. you will be greatly missed.
maziebunny2 Same here!
same here. The world is a complete and utter ridiculous joke but It comforts me that the world I remember in the 80s is still the same world we live in now its just that his song lives on and stays the same and the world is still the same singing the same old song.

It was the same world when he wrote it. Nothing has changed.

I discovered Leonard not early in my life but not too late either. He is an acquired taste for sure, but so many of his songs are just poignant masterpieces of truths and as far as i know he is a art style unto himself. I have never seen anyone mainstream with a style like that which is truly amazing. Truly special artist who got even better as he aged.
Brilliant the first time and tonight all those years later. RIP Leonard Cohen.

“Everybody got this broken feeling like their father or their dog just died”. This lyric hits so hard. Everybody knows he had to make it universally relatable by adding the dog, in case you didn’t have a father.
I bought this album to make a long drive, with some buckets of flowers, travelling 350km, I kept the heater off because it would wilt the flowers.
Going to my father's funeral.
I bought the album blind, had no idea it was this song with these lyrics.
I've played the album on fairly regular rotation since then.
One night since then, I felt a particularly strong compulsion to play it, and the song that starts: "they sentenced me to 15 years of boredom, for trying to change the system from within"...
I played it loudly and I felt a presence in the room. The words mean so much to me.
Then later that night I discovered that Leonard Cohen had died.
I have no idea what that presence was, but I can tell you it really struck me.
This is one heck of an album.
War Dogs brought me here

@John Henry Hatfield There are those among us who never stray even during decades long marriages, there are religious communities in which it is an important Commandment from G-d to fulfill and the fruits are enjoyed with true love.
@John Henry Hatfield Right!! Most of this has been happening for 30-50 years, and a lot was warned about seem that all have happened. I feel so bad for young children born in the last 40 years, the morals have lowered more and more ever since the Industrial Revolution when people left the farm and land for work in big cities, then WW1 tore the remaining farmers to the war and lowered their morals. When Messiah arrives even the non religious will shout with joy and relief.

Possibly the most prophetic song for the 2020s ever. Bang on!!! And Cohen wrote it over 30 years ago.
