Lee is a wealth of knowledge and if you don't want to do the investigation just do what he does. That said when I first learned about the PC1800-FT batteries they could be purchased for 450 each. Now they're 600. Out of my price range. The UB121000 are 150 each making 400Ah half the cost of the Odyssey pc1800-ft times 2. I concede that the Odyssey pc1800-ft is a better battery, but if I were to spend 1200 I'd spend 1700 on Lithium.

At 12:12 is the reason i'm thinking that installing a smallish Electrical Boiler in a VAN may not be a bad idea... may need somewhat of a smarter control unit, but using the power to heat up water isn't a bad use for it ... somewhat similar with an electric heater ... but again there you will want a smart controller and battery management system to use the power in the smartest way, to keep comfort levels high, while using the most power possible, while still keeping the battery full ... maybe even an integrated weather forecast system can help to determine the amount of power to expect to be gained ... and obviously some memory in regards to the power usage profile ... obviously would need various sensors too ... but in all honesty, the whole thing doesn't sound to complicated, and a raspberry PI is probably already overkill for something like this.
You got your energy sinks: battery, waterboiler, electric heater (with feedback sensors)
You got your energy use profile: daily habits, weekly habits (registering database, query's)
You got your energy supply: solar power (shore), battery
You got your energy supply profile: weather forecast (historic energy supply data)
You got some priorities to be set: order of shut down, order of using sinks.
You got some piece of software keeping track of all of these and operating the whole to maximise power storage, while maintaining optimal comfort.
    Seems easily doable tbh...

FYI- the battery isolator that Lee is using is expensive but after watching this I started looking around and I discovered that Sure Power makes a few models also. Thwy have 12v and 24v models. Sure Power 1315-200 | 12-Volt 200-Amp Bidirectional Battery Separator. Sure Power 1315-100 | 12-Volt 100-Amp Bidirectional Battery Separator and both are less the one Lee is using although I bet his is top shelf.

A lot of folks are using the lithium batteries from Tesla automobiles, pulled from vehicles that have been totaled. Quick notes reference: 5.2 MAh, (or kwh),
    24V (25.2v to 18v)
45 to 55 pounds, 27 x 11.5 x 3.5, Lithium Nickel Cobalt Manganese Aluminum Oxide batteries, from reputable source and guarantee, $1,300, and I have seen them for $900. There is talk of these batteries lasting longer than a person's life. If people want reference material, let me know.

25:28-26:30 What exactly is a charge profile? Does this refer specifically to the charge controller? If so, why change the start battery? I'm not sure how the starting battery would be a different volt or amp characteristics than the house battery. Thanks again for sharing your vast knowledge and keeping it relatively simple for a "CZcams" student interested in Solar installation and function. Thanks Jaime for videoing it .

    • @Endless_Skyway_Adventures
      @Endless_Skyway_Adventures Před 5 lety +2

Every battery chemistry has a specific voltage that is best for each stage of charging. A charge profile assigns a voltage and percentage of charge for each stage of charging. He stated that the Odyssey wanted to see absorption stage at 14.7 volts and float stage at 13.6 volts. Other AGM batteries may want to see 14.4 volts absorption and 13.7 volts float. Testing at the manufacturer also helps to determine which percentage of charge is best to switch from bulk to absorption and from absorption to float. These parameters make up the specific "charge profile" for each battery and with the right charger or charge controller parameters can be matched to the charge profile of the battery to ensure that you are charging the battery in the most efficient and durable manner.

So if I buy a engine battery in to match the house batteries so they’re more compatible with the solar, should I replace the alternator with one that matches the battery better if I’m on the road more than the average? Or will the solar keep the engine battery charged better?
And what happens if I’m doing a lot of traveling at night?
Is there a potential to damage the alternator if I leave the original in?

Can I still use this plan if I have a normal starter battery in my class C (ford V10) with the starter battery connected to the coach batteries which have been upgraded to 2 Battle Born 12v 100 hr (lifepo4)? I like the idea of using our solar for all the batteries. 😀 it sounds like the switching voltage levels are good/safe for both types of batteries... But I'm not a pro.

I must say Lee Blake helped me to understand better the charging. My question is what company or type of person would install? I live in Phoenix area and everyone says oh yeah but every place I call does not so this. Frustrating. Advice?

Jamie, next time you run into lee can you ask him about his solar panel tilting system? Thanks!

Just discovered Lee on Enigmatic. I have a similar design philosophy, modular. I'm in the planning stages of a 170 Sprinter 4x4. I'll be selling my low roof 140 Sprinter which was essentially my test bed. I have 2 questions for Lee; the square clear dry goods containers you're using, where do you get those? Secondly and more complicated. Do you have any thoughts on running things like the cook top, computer chargers, etc from DC power sources. I'm thinking this may reduce losses from inverting/rectifying. I was thinking of making adjustable/variable voltage DC outlets throughout the van so I could dial up/down for specific devices.

Just wondering if you still have any Van build stickers left. I came but had to leave the 18th to get back to Texas. You are doing great work. I will gladly pay for it. I love my fan and the solar is working great.

Where do you get the solar motion light wedges?

So do I need to scuff the paint or will the self tapper creat the proper ground connection by default? The question never got answered. About twenty seconds of important information was reapeated but which is fine but that other peice of information would have been nice to know as well. Thanks for listening.

Another great video. Lee is so knowledgeable. I think this is the relay that Lee was talking about www.sterling-power-usa.com/ProConnectVoltageSensitiveRelay.aspx
Gosh, Lee has such strong following. He is a true influencer. His youtube has no video but has over 8000 subscribers. He can make some serious dough in this social media economy.
I am researching installing hitch and brake controller and wires to prepare my RX 350 for towing my just ordered yet to be built casita. I found many installers do not isolate the 2 batteries. Even installation on CZcams does not do it. I am researching add isolation myself. The VSR sounds much more elegant than the ignition controlled relay. Thanks

I'm new, my question is do I need a charge controller to charge house battery from van alternator? thanks, Sam

Normally I believe charge controllers are used when one has solar. That said I am not certain if one would be required or helpful if you have a specialized battery type(lithium) with a different charge profile compared to a normal battery type the alternator is charging(lead acid). Here is a video on installation of a batter isolator this is a one way charging system. czcams.com/video/1zrwHyy4qyY/video.html

Thanks for a great video Jamie and Lee - I was not aware of that product line from sterling. I’m running one of their BB1230 Dc->Dc chargers in my jeep and love it. My system is a bit different with 2 AGMs under the hood connected with a standard voltage sensitive rely in a jeep specific mount feeding a Battle Born 100AH in the back via the BB1230. The rear system also has 200w of solar and will soon have a second Battle Born 100AH. I need the charger instead of a relay due to the different battery chemistries (and dont want to go lithium under the hood where it is super hot and I have a winch, etc). It would be awesome it the BB1230 was bi-directional with support for different charging profiles on each side... 😀

The used Tesla s batteries5KW --55 pounds--- 1100 amp potential discharge rate---low resistance so quick charging--98 % charge efficiency --24 volt doubles the capability of an MPPT controler----available on E-bay for around $1300---worth a look but must be set up correctly or can burn up your van--yet safe if properly set up-- IMO worth a look--www.mobile-solarpower.com/tesla-solar-battery-diy.html
