Just to put some context to Elliot Page's outfit: he was paying homage to newly out/young trans men. The ill fitting suit bc it's the smallest men's size available and he hasn't grown into it yet, the sneakers rather than proper dress shoes, and the green flower in his lapel is a tribute to Oscar Wilde 💚 Elliot was the only man in a suit there that I felt understood the assignment by representing part of the american young trans masc experience

ok tbh i like the context, i’m a trans guy and at first i was like “is elliot page really gonna go to the met gala in a suit that doesn’t fit?” but i’ve had so many similar experiences with men’s clothes and i see what he was trying to do with his outfit.
Do people really think he can’t afford a tailor? Like obviously he could have the best fitting suit if he wanted. It was obviously on purpose and an omage to like, newly out trans masc at prom. Also like, even if it weren’t on purpose and a choice, being allowed to wear a suit finally is a big deal! If he needed time to get comfortable with that first before going more out there, more power to him. I’m still working on “I can use flower scented shampoo and wear purple if I want and be a valid trans man.” Idk, I feel like a trans masc person needing some time to get comfortable before going outside of stereotypical masculinity, if they ever do, would understandable and gets a pass. Yes even at the met gala. I care so much more about him having a comfortable happy time now that he’s out than… being “not boring” or fashionable or whatever.
I just have to step in an defend Lupita Nyong'o's beautifully creative fit. The denim is supposed to represent the fabrics importance during the American industrial revolution, when workers needed strong working clothes but also something affordable. The style was inspired by elegant old Hollywood femme fatales to represent fierceness and feminine strength. Even her afro is styled in reference to the work of Black American artist Lorna Simpson right down to its texture. This is a passionate, meaningful look from a creative woman. 👌👌👌

She's not American, so she took the American denim and combined it with something traditional from her own country. She matched the theme in her own unique way
i just find no point in celebrities going to the met gala if they’re not gonna follow the theme.
I think Ciara (American football) and Billie Eilish (Marilyn Monroe) did good too. But a lot of the fits are really American for us non-Americans, so there's that.
My favorite was Niki Tutorials. The Marsha P. Johnson tribute looked gorgeous and well thought out.

Elliot was actually great. The flower was an hommage to Oscar Wilde and the oversized suite is every transmasc at the start of their journey. Two great choices

Iman is simply the most gorgeous model of all time. In interviews she’s so well spoken, funny, and kind. She’s so amazing she doesn’t need a last name. I grew up fascinated by her and her trends. Once Mac finds out how old she actually is, he’ll probably faint.

Usually it takes place in the spring because that's when the costume institute opens every year(?), but this year I guess they wanted to use it to close out fashion week or something and celebrate the museum/institute at the same time.

4:56 mac's "bad signing" gives me life.
Some outfits may have looked really simple (Elliot Page) or very chaotic (Dan Levy) but had very good stories and inspiration behind them. This Met Gala you really needed to search up the facts of people's outfits although obviously for your videos is just first look reactions which as always very entertaining x3 but maybe something to think about for next year since could happen again?
the main reason I like met gala; watching Mac roast the met gala fails and praise the ones who did the assignment correctly.

How did nikkietutorials (a Dutch woman) understand the assignment more than the actual Americans?
She wore a dress that paid tribute to Marsha p Johnson, who was a trans woman (like Nikki) who advocated lgbtq+ rights and who organised (I believe) one of the first prides (which was a riot). It’s a huge part of American history which everyone should learn about in school.

There's another one that I think you should've looked at, a 19yo indigenous woman by the name of Quannah Chasinghorse. I feel like she really embodied the theme imho, and was one of the few who understood the assignment.

@@trishasurangana2278 Oh, sorry, transmasc means you are AFAB (assigned female at birth) and identity more with masculinity. So, a transman is transmasc; but someone who is transmasc isn't necessarily a transman.
Transman is a specific identity, characterize with the identification as a MAN (most often they will present as a such, but not always); where as transmasc people identity with MASCULINITY.
With transfem and transwomen (someone who is amab, "assigned male at birth") just replace "masculinity" with femininity and "man" with "woman," respectively.
The nuances of gender identity and gender expression are far too complex for a single CZcams comment.

In order to really understand how brilliant a few of those concepts were, you NEED to understand American fashion history. The denim dress and hair style (Lupita Nyong’o) were both nods to American artists of the 1970’s -1980’s it’s a bizarre look- but it’s on theme. Moderngurlz has a really good commentary video on this event!
