As someone who lives a literally a block away from the cemetery, I would like to ask anyone who is considering visiting the graves to please be extra respectful when visiting the sites. Yes, there are historic graves, but we also have graves of people whose families still live and are active members of our community. I know not every visitor is disrespectful, but I've seen too many people treat the graveyard like a public park instead of the sacred place that it is. Please, please, PLEASE be extra courteous when visiting our town, and like... don't be weird.
Agreed
Loved your vlog! I've been to Sitka on a cruise port stop, walked around the town before a lot of things were open and then went to the totem park and did a zodiac boat tour, so I didn't get a lot of shopping done. But I will be returning next year, so the specifics on each store was extremely helpful! I appreciate that you focused on the locally owned and made items - that is exactly my kind of shopping! I subscribed to your channel and am going to check out your previous videos too. You have a very soothing narration, give lots of details and show a nice variety of items - thank you for taking the time to post!
Wow, you made my day. Sometimes I make these videos and I wonder, is anyone else as interested in this stuff as much as I am? Thanks for taking the time to watch and then writing such a nice comment!
thanks for including the historical stuff... all that shopping makes my eyes glaze over.
Agreed, a little shopping, a little history, a little eating, it’s all good!
My wife grew up in Sitka. She is 65 now and can recall when the first cruse ships began to arrive there when she was 12. The industry was small at first but then began to take off!
Wow, that would be something to see, it must have been exciting to have a big cruise ship pull into your little village. Thanks for sharing that memory.
@@TinagirlTravels the best way to describe it is that it was like an invasion, only a few at first, then a flood!! Sitka was a small southeastern town and it didn't seem like a tourist destination, but the tourists kept coming! Now in the summer the tour business is a huge, bustling industry!! It's been an interesting experience for my wife.
I think we will bring an extra suitcase for all these treasures featured in your video!
Absolutely! I always laugh now when people say “we only travel with a carry on”. I travel with a carry on inside a giant suitcase, 😂
Just lovely ❤
Thank you!
Great series, I love all the details.
Glad you like them!
Heading here next weekend! Can’t wait!
Lucky Duck!!! Have fun!
Also, it would be nice if you could include land acknowledgement for the Tlingit/Lingit people who have stewarded this land for generations before Russian and American occupation. Literally right next to the Pioneer Home is the Naa Kahídi house, a local performance venue modelled after Tlingit Clan houses where the Naa Kahídi dancers often perform. We also have Totem Park, which is just a short 10 min-ish scenic seaside walk from downtown.
Good to know.
I am looking forward to the icy strait point video! Will you be posting a video for Seward and anchorage, or did you not go to the towns? Thanks! 😁
I’m just working on it now! Hoping it will be out by the weekend. We did not go to Anchorage or Seward, definitely want to check out those ports of call. What ship are you going on?
@@TinagirlTravels we are going to be on royal Caribbean radiance of the seas northbound from Vancouver.
Did you do the old time phtotos at forget me not? We are wanting to do that but was curious if they have a good clothes selection? Also she said they only have the bar scene but she said we can move stuff around and take pictures around the store since we dont want to do a bar scene. On TripAdvisor it says they have 50 greenscreen backdrops and a dog sled, victorian couch, etc so I'm guessing those are old pictures and description and they don't have that stuff anymore? I'm sure we will have fun anyway but was just curious. 😊
Also if our cruise ship leaves at 4 then around what time should we catch the shuttle back to the cruise ship? We want to have time to explore these stores but don't want to miss the ship.
Hi Amber, I didn’t do the photo shoot, I was traveling on my own for this trip. It would be fun to do though. The ship will let you know what time to be back by. Everything is really close by once you get into town. Enjoy your trip!
I'm sorry to keep bugging you 😅 we unfortunately won't have time to go to all the stores but I am having problems deciding between Artist Cove Gallery or Island Artist Gallery. Which one would you recommend between the two. We aren't in to buying paintings so I am leaning towards the Artist Cove Gallery? I am having problems deciding on the stores to go to since I want to go to them all lol 😆
Both are awesome, I wish I could have spent more time at the Island Artists Gallery. Are you going to Icy Straight Point? I just released that video. Thanks for watching Amber! Have a great trip!!
@@TinagirlTravels yes we are going to icy strait point. Thanks 😊
The Devils Club is amazing
Agreed!
Awesome video. What month was this filmed?
End of July, beginning of August.
Going out on a limb...years ago I had my after school students from Pennsylvania, conduct a pen pal event with students from Sitka. I wonder if there could be anyone around who participated.
How many years ago would that have been?
What a fun thing to do! Let’s see if anyone involved in that reaches out!
Cannot believe you didn’t spotlight Wintersong Soap Company in Sitka. One I visit every time I visit Sitka!
I’ll have to check it out next time!
@@TinagirlTravels They offer a wealth of locally made soaps, lotions, salves and have many locally made items. Very friendly and reasonable prices.
I highly recommend the Devils Club Soap!
Great video, what is the name of the shop that you showed briefly towards the end that had beautiful indigenous animals carved? Also the shop that had beautiful Russian nesting dolls?
Loved the video. In Skagway in September.
The Russian nesting dolls can be found several places, I believe she is talking about Grandfather Frost Russian Christmas store. The Alaska Gallery is next door.
I think it was the Russian American Store, 134 Lincoln St, Sitka, AK
@@TinagirlTravels Yes they also sell them there!
My wife and I are enjoying your videos as we will be heading to Alaska again in just 3 days. (Have you proofread the title of this vid?)
lol, I can’t believe you’re the first one to have noticed that! 😂 thanks for the heads up! Have a great trip!!!
