Interesting video guys. It's always refreshing to hear another perspective on a place I've lived all my life. I would like to enlighten you though, on your take on rail in Australia. Australia does actually have a fairly extensive rail network and all of the east coast is well connected by rail, between the capital cities; as is Perth to Adelaide and Adelaide to the interior; north to Alice Springs and Darwin. However, unlike Europe, Australia's rail network was established principally, to transport goods and products from city to city, rather than for passenger transport. Whilst you can certainly travel on passenger trains between all of these places, the distances are long and the cost - when compared to plane or coach - is frequently quite high by comparison. Unlike Europe, where you can travel via short hops between major population centres, Australia is massive and sparsely populated. Hence passenger rail transport can be expensive and let's face it, a less attractive proposition when you can travel from Brisbane to Melbourne by plane in 2 and a half hours as opposed to 26+ hours on a train.

We're so glad you enjoyed, thank you so much for watching. Yes, it's understandable, some things you just take for granted when you're used to them, and don't necessarily think of logistics. It absolutely make sense though to favour planes for cross country travel here 😊

Don't forget that unless you have a concession card (eg Pensioner's or Senior's), rail cannot compete with road, which provides more freedom for the family.
IIRC the concession fare for the above is very, very cheap.
IIRC its A$2.50, but someone can correct me on that.
IIRC this apply to travel by rail, anywhere in NSW.

Re the snow, the word's first ski club was the Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club, established in the Snowy Mountains in 1861 and holding their first meeting in August of that year.

    Two comments:
    1) We have some great ski fields/resorts in NSW and Victoria. They do get powder snow and have snow making machines for when there is not enough snow. Not always as much snow as NZ and the season isn't as long.
    2) You can travel by train from North Queensland down the coast to Sydney then on to Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Also, you can do a great trip on the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin.

Actually the worst blizzard I've been in was in Queensland in 1984 in Stanthorpe where they had 6 inches of snow and strong cold winds on the hills around. The next best was snowfall at Mt Hotham in Victoria. I went to the top of the Jungfrau in Switzerland in winter and the sun was shining. Probably just as well.

@@Misshowzat I’ve made the plane flight multiple times because I lived in Perth with family on the east coast. The length of the flight depends on which direction you’re flying and the time of year because of the prevailing winds. If you’re travelling the right way at the right time it can take quite a bit of time off the trip. Shortest I have personally experienced is 3 hours 50 minutes but I have also experienced nearly 5 hours!

There's a reason there is no rail network traversing the largest island continent from North East to South West.
The distance is so great, it's cheaper for everyone to fly.
John O Groats to Penzance is probably similar to Brisbane to Melbourne.
The Indian Pacific is more than double that distance. An alternate route from Brisbane to Perth is way further.
Not having a dig. I'm just stating facts. It's a big country.

However you can have it in your vehicle as long as you don't stop in other than designated areas, ie. a toilet stop in a rest area. #2, Australia has a greater snow fall annually than Switzerland. #3, the Indian Pacific, the Ghan and the latest one from Brisbane to Adelaide are fantastic. Have done all three. HOPEFULLY! doing the Ghan again in Oct. this year. This time from Darwin to Adelaide. Not cheap, but a great way to see Oz. Keep up the great vids.

when i went to oz i knew certain ones like 'car park' and 'thongs' but then there were thousands of others that i'd never heard before in my life. especially because oz is saturated with americana so they already knew most of my specifically yankee vocabulary (even if they didn't use it) but it's a totally one way street there's very little australian pop culture in the states so when it came to things like school, parts on an automobile, etc. it was like learning a whole new language.
i would think being from the u.k. there would not be as much of a language barrier in oz as there would be fer americans but i suppose even then the differences are perdy extensive.

Australia's population outside the cities can be quite sparse with big distances between towns so unlike Europe it does not have the population density to make rail services viable. In addition the time it takes to travel by train between cities means flying or even driving is a more attractive option. Plus the fact that in NSW all the train services converge on Sydney so even if you don't want to go there you often have to. There is no interconnectivity between different country lines except via Sydney. For instance, if you wanted to go from the Inland city of Tamworth to Dubbo (just a few hours south west by road) you would take one train south east to Sydney on the New England line and then get another train north west back to Dubbo on the Western NSW line almost completing a full circle. If the trains' arrival and departure times don't mesh and you have to wait in Sydney, the whole exercise could take nearly 24 hours. Madness. An inland line is to be built between Melbourne and Brisbane (by passing Sydney) but this will mainly be for freight.

    • @TheBAMFamalam
      @TheBAMFamalam  Před 3 lety +1

Gosh, that's super interesting. It makes sense as everything is so far apart here, and as the population is not massive - it is something we've always taken for granted in Europe. In saying that, flights are a great option for travelling in a speedy manner here ❤️

The trains outside metropolitan areas are great for that sort of experience, but that's it. There is a reasonably good system in NSW to travel from Sydney to/from other centres a short journey out, but that's limited to the Newcastle, Wollongong and Blue Mountains area. Not the sort of travel for which you'd commonly use a train in Europe.

May I make a hopefully helpful suggestion about the quality of the audio in your video? You are recording in an empty room without nearby microphones so the sound is boxy, it reverberates, and sounds distant. A furnished room is better. It absorbs some of the sound that reflects off bare walls. As for time zones, Australia’s width covers three time zones, and Queensland has no daylight savings because the extra hour of sunlight fades their curtains. Speed limits are monitored with very accurate technology, and the view is that if they allowed you to drive 5kmPH over the speed limit signs would say so. In Victoria the cops use to allow a 3kph leeway to cover different wheel diameters, tyre pressure, speedo errors etc but I believe they dropped the 3kph leeway and expect the driver to stay at or below the speed limit. And there are signs - they are white, with a red circle with a black number within it, and again, in Victoria in a built up area, the speed limit is 50 unless there’s a speed limit sign saying otherwise. I think Qld’s the same.

Daylight Saving. The closer you are to the equator, the longer the daylight hours, in summer. Qld, NT and WA have parts of the state close to the Equator, which means daylight saving is not, and you won't have two time zones in the one state

Trains connect all the major cities. The world-famous "Indian Pacific" runs between Sydney and Perth. All cities have major suburban rail networks. The Sunshine Coast is certainly not indicative of life in the major cities where the vast majority of people live. Also, the ski fields of Australia in the Snowy Mountains are actually bigger than the whole of Switzerland. Pre Covid, thousands of Europeans head to our ski resorts during the European summer.

Can we just go back to the rail system for a bit. The problem is not simply the lower population but rather the greatly lower population density. There are pretty good trains using the east and west mainlines from London to Edinburgh and Glasgow, making the journey in a few hours. But look at all the cities and industries in between. They will support many passenger and freight trains making shorter journeys - and hence much better track. That allows higher speeds for passenger and any through freight trains. If I were to travel north from Sydney to Brisbane, I'd pass through the general Newcastle area; that requires reasonable passenger and freight services and gets them. But north from there has much lower demand for both and thus the service is at a much reduced level. The tracks are not maintained in a fashion to allow high speed. The same analysis applies to the Sydney - Melbourne route

  • @tileux

you guys must be really bad at avoiding the police. Ive been speeding my whole life - speed limit plus GST or over - and pretty much never get busted. With practice you'll work out how to avoid speed cameras. Its just a matter of working out their hunting grounds and preferred times. Just bear in mind they try to police road black spots at peak hours - you wont find them on a major highway out in the boonies after around 9pm. The idea is to scare the maximum amount of drivers into slowing down a bit in danger areas (which kind of works).
You can travel by train from Sydney to Perth, via Melbourne and adelaide, on the Indian Pacific train, which mostly caters to tourists. It crosses the Nullarbor but doesnt stop in Canberra. You can get off in Yass to get to Canberra if you want. The other big train ride if the Ghan train from adelaide to Darwin (and back). These are multiple day train trips though with your own cabin - its basically like the orient express except in Australia.
