If "Bob-Omb Blast" was renamed into "Item Blast" (blast is just being used as a test-word/codename for this idea's sake), grabbing a single item-box should give you a singular item rotating around your kart, that can be received particularly based on your current position in placements from other players, and unlike Modern Balloon Battle, players don't lose points by having to respawn. Instead, a negative-score counter is added to make the hit-point's experience simplified and balanced to begin with.
I'd also love to explain how by color-coding each player, they cannot be hit by their own item, but at that point it would make this comment of mine a little unnecessarily too long, so therefore I rest my case (t)here, capiche!
