EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #89: ROWLEY
The parish of Rowley or Row-ley is an interesting slab of land on the East Yorkshire Wolds, which contains six settlements - Bentley, Risby, Rowley, RIplingham, High Hunsley and Little Weighton
All six of them have interesting pieces of history and we’ll be visiting them all in turn in this episode. Rowley, the settlement which this parish is named for, is one of the smallest, yet has perhaps the
Most interesting past. Vastly depopulated compared to centuries ago, it consists of a church, a hotel and a handful of houses. The tiny village was responsible for the founding of Rowley, Massachusetts
Thanks to a former rector - the Revered Ezekiel Rogers. He and 20 families emigrated to the American colonies in 1639, sailing from Hull in the merchant ship John of London
One of those 20 families was the Grants, and the English fashion model Jodie Kidd is a direct descendant of them. This was revealed in 2008 on the BBC TV show Who Do You Think You Are?.
The largest settlement of the six is Little Weighton, where most of the population live. Little Weighton was supposedly the site of the famous battle of Brunanburh in the year 937
The Hull and Barnsley railway passed through this area too, and all of this is before we’ve even begun to consider the Risby estate, the deer park and the historic beacon site at High Hunsley.
