This is just class, mate. Lots of people review products, including how they perform and whether they're worth the money. Some will look for the cheapest product on the market that will do the job well enough. Not too many specifically go out to review a bunch of products and lay out their pros and cons to give viewers the cheapest option for their specific needs to get (or to keep) them in the activity. This is just really nice of you.

A good pro-tip is when shooting broadheads on arrows with threaded inserts, and it penetrates enough that the head is sticking out the far side, you can unscrew the head off before pulling your arrow out and it doesn't shred the target as much.

For field points i love a bag target. Once you blow it out; just push the stuffing back in place, find another piece of tough material (canvas, old tarp, several empty cat litter bags) to cover the hole, then wrap it tight with a couple layers of Alabama chrome (duck tape for the uncultured), and bingo bango you got a few hundred more shots before you gotta repeat the process. I shoot a lot so i have done this a few times to my hurricane bag and it works a treat.

A relevant factor that needs to be added to the overall equation is that of distance to target, 10, 15, 20 meters out or whatever distance you shoot at also determines the speed of the arrow and the penetration of the arrow.

Minor gripe. The Mythbusters myth was splitting a wooden arrow down it's length. That was busted because of the wood grain, path of least resistance

Once the centre area of most target softens up, it does not matter which side you shoot it from. They just don’t stop the arrow as effectively once the middle is worn out. Shooting at different spots. Will buy you some time.

Have 2 black hole targets which set 1 behind the other. They last one season. Once your bow is tuned for your broadheads you no longer need to shoot broadheads, just invest in a good field tip target and they last a long time. Just bought a 365 4’ octagon with five cubes that you can turn all sides for thousands of shots. Paid $750 at my local archery shop. All the cores are replaceable.

Great video! Thanks for making it. I have that Black Hole target and once I shot the bullseye out of it I stuffed a dollar store foam roller into it which fit the area I shot out perfectly. Once I shoot the hell out of that foam roller i'll stuff another one in. The foam roller does move with the impact especially with heavy 700 gn arrows so I secured it by pushing a broken wooden arrow shaft in from either side. Problems solved.

I own the 22" version of this target for my 40-50 lb recurves. Here's what I found works very very well. I hang an arrow curtain behind it touching the back of this target. Even in the shot-out bullseye the arrow is easily stopped by the arrow curtain. I have shot hundreds of arrows and will keep shooting hundreds of arrows. All I need is something to attach my paper animal targets too which I mount on cardboard and hold in place with four long wood screws. Another big advantage is my arrows are incredibly easy to pull out.

Great video, Kramer! You have come a long way in the last few years and I’ve really enjoyed being able to watch you grow and succeed!!
I have this target and have put thousands of arrows into it with a compound. It does hold up quite well if you intentionally don’t always shoot in the center. Granted, I primarily use field points and only use broadheads to make sure they are flying correctly for hunting. Although it does work well to stop brodheads, it doesn’t appear to be able to last for more than a few hundred shots in the same spot before it is really damaged. I went to the point of using a couple ratchet straps to compress it and take the cover off. I was able to rearrange and restack the layers of foam to remove the concentrated worn places. This worked really well and made it almost like new again. A little flat black paint was applied to allow me to then repaint some new aiming spots. It works really well and you don’t have to spend a lot compared to other targets. I do make sure to store it indoors, which probably helps keep it from deteriorating as quickly.

So I filled an IKEA parkla bag ($0.99) with plastic bags ($0), backed it with a used polar fleece pled (the dog got a new one ($1.99)) Used duct tape to mark some targets.
I use the same target for 2 years now with a #50 bow. A few months ago I put the whole thing into a new parkla bag. I don't think it would take broadheads but for target arrows it is the best.

  • @jwisniewski86
    @jwisniewski86 Před rokem

I've used this target for over 2 years now. I shoot traditional as well as compound and my wife shoots a compound. It works well for my recurve (recurve is 70lbs draw) and my wife's compound (Wife's compound is 40 lbs draw), but my compound (80lbs) punches right through after a little use. If I shoot at one of the outermost corners, it will sometimes catch the fletching due to them being fresh still. It's still a pain to get out though.
Another drawback is how light it is. When you shoot it from a distance, if you hit one side or the other, it will start to rotate the target. Sometimes it will actually tip over if you hit too high. Also, I have lost multiple arrows from them glancing off the OSB on the top and being launched into oblivion.
If I could do it all over again, I would just pony up the extra cash and buy a quality target, and that's coming from a cheapskate.
Edit: When these targets get even the slightest mist or rain on them, everything slides through like butter.

I've tried 3 of the 4 targets that you're gonna test and have found that they last me about 3 months. With just shooting field points. Mine always stay outside, though. But that isn't supposed to matter. I haven't tried the higher priced foam targets, only because it seems I never have the money to spare for a nice Morrell, Rhinehart, or 365 archery target at the time I need a new target. Maybe one day. I've been researching building my own target out of EVA foam exercise mats. This way, I only have to replace a couple layers of the mat and not have to buy a whole target.

I had a black spot target butt delivered to use indoors. When it arrived I was disappointed the top & bottom boards are chip board. Ireland is wet, it rains a lot. Poor quality chipboard melts in the wet. The foam layers are a hard foam unlike that of the ‘super butt, I have those (90cm) outside. I had considered using the black spot behind small 3D & move them around. The black spot is surprisingly heavy too. In any case it’s strictly an indoors target butt.
A relative arranged that the Avalon classic target 45 be sent to me. (I don’t see it on your list) it was €20 cheaper. The foam is the same as the fo of the super butte and the framing wood is plywood.. the Avalon is lighter & more weather versatile.

I use the Cheap supposed to be for Crossbow model of the Black Hole for my archery as this is not enough for the really fast Compounds according to the reviews, the Junior is too weak for all but 30 to maybe 35 pound bows depending on the design with the bigger model of Black Hole not enough for most poundage above 40 pounds at an archers draw as well as the winds seem to knock down the thinner Junior Black Hole as well the lighter model that Black Hole gets blown around easier. The only other model I would get is the more crossbow brands also owned by Black Hole or Yellow Jaket in there lineup of brands if I ever went to use compound bows. I might get one of the bigger Block models with the fabric holding the materteral in that are made for compound but only if using for nothing faster then the Super Recurve bows.

I suppose if you are target shooting a lot this target is not what you want. For me, I only use a target to fine tune just before hunting season. So this would last me years.
Distance from the target will also alter these numbers. Again for me, this is unrealistic because of that.
Penetration is reduced by distance thus increasing the life of the target.

Maybe it was mentioned and I missed it but... can you give gpp of the two arrows or total weight of the arrows. Shooting 3D competitions, I try to shoot lighter weight arrows.

Do the angled Shots penetrate deeper into the target? If so, The extra surface area causing additional friction coukd account for the extra Difficulty in extraction.

Angled shots might be piercing the foam layers, whereas the straight shots end up sliding between the layers, meaning the straight shots are easier to pull out.

I have had this target for a few months. Within a few weeks, my arrows were coming out the back. For about 25-50 arrows a day, it wears out so fast. Right now, I have 2 of these targets back-to-back. If you don't want to spend $100 for a higher quality target, getting 2 of these back-to-back is a pretty valid option. (fyi, I shoot compounds)

Do you also test and rate your selfmade low budget target? Great content!

My home made cardboard target has the same performance. Actually even a little bit better but I guess it will drop faster as bow draw weight is increased. And there is also a distance factor too.

Does the higher poundage of the bow affect the damage? I shoot field tips out of a 30 lb recurve at this same target, and I've had to have done thousands of shots at it and it's never gotten that damaged.

I had a question, how come you haven't suggested a bale of staw for a target. While yes it can be messy to move some times, the cost and durability has some other targets beat by a long shot. The huge draw back I find is the weight of moving it.

[TL:DR] they work, arent great but id give em a solid 5/10] Speaking from experience here, hay bales work but theyre not very consistent, fairly small, can wreck broadheads, And aren't the most weather resistant [Consistency] not all hwy bales are equal, some may be packed tight and be better at stopping arrows, or they can be light and wont do quite as good of a job, not a deal breaker but something to note. [Small shooting face] you have to shoot a hay bale head on or itll pass right through, again, not a deal breaker but important to note. [Wrecking broadheads] hay isnt the cleanest of things out there, theyre is a good chance of sticks, dirt and sometimes rocks in a bale, sticks and dirt will dull blades quick but a rock and destroy a 10-45 dollar broadhead in a second. storing it can be an issue too, unless you live in a warm and dry climate, the twine and the bale itself will rot if its sitting on the ground or gets rained on, also dont want to bring them inside because they can be homes to bugs and pests you dont want around the house. Biggets upside it theyre super cheap, can get a bale anywhere from $1-$7

Will black hole work for Approximately 350fps xbow ? Just to zero scope in with broadhead each season ???

A ratchet strap around it will increase its life, just tighten it as you wear it out

I bought one of these targets last year to test broad heads and using a 60lb compound bow probably traveling at 250-260fps with a 442gr arrow. It lasted about 2-3 days before I was getting so much penetration I was worried I was gonna get pass through. Since got a new bow 71lb draw that shoots 290fps with a 476gr arrow it blew straight threw it. Absolute junk target
