Someone with more knowledge on history might correct me on this, but I feel as this was a similar thing with other leaders from other countries in the mid to late 20th cent. Especially Hitler and Mussolini were in my opinion characters that knew how to appeal to crowds and their maleficent personas were molded in parallel to them molding crowds into racist mobs. People turn a blind eye to the imaginable evil capacity they have. Nearly everyone who thinks he would have stood up to those regimes is not aware of his own capacity of evil and that is terrifying.
