Just a little note.... today (not for the first time) I got hit by one of those stupid telegram message prize scam things with a channel stealing my icon and pretending to be me. I should be flattered I suppose! 😊... but truth is these leeches are trying to rip you off and youtube are a bit slow in dealing with the problem. Fact is I don't ever give prizes away.... so if you ever get a message from me saying you have won something report it and ignore it. 😎👍 PS. please do keep the comments coming though... I will always try to reply and keep up with them, but if you don't get a response you should know that each and every one is read and appreciated! 🎾

Firebird pickups, despite that description comparing them to fat single coils, are in fact Humbuckers. Mini humbuckers are constructed exactly like full size humbuckers, with a bar magnet between the steel pole pieces, magnetizing them. Firebird pickups use two bar magnets with the coils wound directly around each of them.

Ive been wanting a Firebird for a few years, but it was so hard to find one for sale anywhere near my home. Finally a buddy of mine who knew I was looking called yesterday saying he found one for sale just down the road. So I got the guy's number and was able to buy it today, January 16,2023. It feels and sounds great. The only Firebird I had ever played before was a Gibson, which played and felt beautifully. My Epiphone Firebird feels just as good and I saved an awful lot of money!!

Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd played a Firebird on Freebird, that iconic solo is just minutes of Firebird blasting. Later he switched to an Explorer, so his guitar choice was kind of out there for his time (early seventies)... but man, he could make a guitar scream.

My son-in-laws cousin just bought one of these through Guitar Center and they actually did a very nice setup on it. The action is perfect, intonation is perfect, no fret buzz, no high frets, and the nut is cut correctly. The guitar plays and sounds better than the Gibson Firebird I owned back in the 70's. It was very easy to play some Johnny Winter riffs and it sounded great through a tube amp.

@@theguitaristas Firebird pickups are humbuckers, but with a slightly different design. A mini humbucker is just like a regular humbucker but with smaller bobbins; it has steel pole pieces running through the center of the coil and a bar magnet under the coil. A firebird pickup has the same small bobbins as a mini humbucker, but instead of steel pole pieces and a bar magnetic, it has magnetic blades running the center of the coil.

Funny, kind of the inversion here as I was up to get out of the strat mindset. Was lookin for a versatile tone with oldschool charm. LPs were never really my style nor sound, and somethin i can really support here in terms of this excellent video is that the form of the bird and the pickups will make your play, your innovation spectrum, different. But also, the bird is not everybodys thing. But it can sing in its way, highs and also lows with a rough charm.

I bought one of these about 6 months ago I was really impressed with it. Definitely one of the best Epiphone purchases I've made. Edit: by the way I also have a Gibson Firebird studio 2018 with p90s and a set neck (not a traditional firebird but it's cool and sounds great) and the Epiphone comes close and has the neck through design unlike the Gibson studio.

Come on Colin, you have already turned me on to the SG, now after watching this video I can see myself going to my local shop and ordering one of these Epiphone's as it has all the right specs and sounds amazing!!! Thank you again for another awesome video! You are the Best!

They are killer guitars. Got one when they first came out from Sweetwater had them do a setup to my preferences and man it plays and sounds good. It definitely punches in way above its weight class. The epi firebird is the closest to matching its Gibson counterpart out of the new epi line up.

Nice demo of this guitar, I've always been intrigued by Firebirds, but I've heard they are definitely somewhat of an "acquired taste" and take some adjustment to feel right. There is a hilarious segment in Bernie Marsden's book where he describes Micky Moody's difficulties with a new Firebird that he had wanted.

Good in depth review as usual, I’ve got the Epiphone Firebird from around 15 years ago which is an excellent guitar but has a set in neck which is obviously a deviation from the original Gibson design. I’m quite tempted by this new version due to the through neck and multi laminated construction although I don’t think that it sounds significantly different to my older guitar . As far as I understand the original Firebird pickups were humbuckers with two bar magnets one in each of the bobbins unlike the usual one bar magnet between the two bobbins that most humbuckers have. There have been various differences in Firebird pickup designs over the years including one with a single ceramic magnet between the two bobbins. Finding a reasonably priced gig bag or case for one of these monsters could be problematic but I wonder if a bass bag or case might do at a push.

Another great review and what a fascinating guitar that is; I almost want to get one and turn it to evil... That massive mahogany body and neck construction looks very promising for _thiccc_ riffs.
Always loved the idea of a more traditional, but eccentric guitar used for a genre it originally wasn't exactly intended for and someday I'll definetly try that out ^^

  • @PerpetuallyTiredMusician
    @PerpetuallyTiredMusician Pƙed rokem +4

First off great video. The firebird pickups are humbucker pickups they have two bar magnets with rails that are in the center of each bobbin of the humbucker while for example a mini humbucker have only one bar magnet between/below the bobbins touching the posts. I think I remember all that right and I hope it helps.
Firebirds, to me at least, has always felt large the same way as a jazzmaster and the epi scroll feels full sized, they feel very long/tall end to end. So as someone who started out playing bass but swapped instrument rather late (when I studied music in uni) they have always felt "correctly" sized.
Now to see if they have made some limited lefty run or if you can special order them.
Peace and have a great weekend everyone.

Once I found the form fitting case, which took six months I have only had mine out a few times. I got mine in late 2020, about this time of year. They're a stunning guitar, and they packed a lot of features into them for the price. One thing that gets me while playing a true dimension Firebird guitar, it honestly feels like a bass in length and feel, but the fretboard has the optical illusion to be tiny or smaller than normal in relation to the length. LOVE it though, and the only way you will get it away from me is at my estate sale, haha. Forever keeper!

First off, great video and demo of this Epi Firebird. Gotz mine back in April. Ordered thru Sweetwater last year and it took 6 months to get it. Prolly was sitting/waiting on a cargo ship in Long Beach for 75% of that time. Coming from Sweetwater it arrived set up wonderfully. They are really great with their 55-Point guitar inspection/setup. I love this geetar, it's my favorite right now. I'm not just saying that cause it's new. And I've got a lot of other geetars to choose from too. This right here is the best value of any new instrument in 2022. I opted for the case also, awesome as well.

Hi Colin! Thanks for another cool deep dive into another cool guitar. The Firebirds are unique and I don't have a lot of experience playing them. I'm not sure if I've even played one at all actually. I've always been impressed with neck thru guitars though. This one looks like fun.
Something I love about every one of your videos is your guitar tone. I love how you dial in your stuff. Always some very tasty rock n roll sounds. I use different tones according to the music I'm playing but my default tone, or the voice in my head if you will, is in that medium gain range where you operate in. We EQ our stuff similarly from what I hear. Not metal but nowhere near clean with a good mid presence. I think that a good drive pedal going into a good Fender amp is an underrated thing in guitar circles.

I love, Love, LOVE my Epiphone Firebird. Epiphone has really upped their game over the past several years. I am an inveterate tinkerer, when it comes to my guitars. I’m constantly tweaking, adjusting, etc. The Firebird and the 50’s Les Paul are the first to Epi’s I’ve owned with which I was perfectly happy. The ONLY quibble I had with the Firebird was the pickup switch. That’s a cheap fix. Otherwise, the pickups, the construction, the finish
 I am completely satisfied.
