All those losses just made the joy of beating Kaycee's Mod and 100%ing it far, far greater. I love Inscryption so much.
Yeah for some reason I found Act 1 and Challenge level 1 excruciatingly difficult which made the win all the more satisfying (even leshy agrees with this ideology, hence why he plays against you so viciously). Yet somehow I was mostly breezing through the other challenge levels (and I beat level TEN today). I think the initial parts of leshy’s game is actually showing you the ropes despite feeling so full, so you’re well equipped for the REAL difficulties
What, dont like drawing 5 FUCKING PELT IN A GOD DAMN ROW? Just get better at the game i suppose. God i love this game but it hurts me emotionally sometimes
@@Epsicronics While rng will always be a factor in the game, a large part of the game is trying to minimise that RNG - a lot of players will use stuff like campfires and even sacrifices just to get rid of cards, because having a smaller deck is more consistent and easier to play around (hey, P03 was right on that front) That’s why most Skull Storm strats involve having only one 1 cost card, because they abuse the game logic that forces drawing one of them on turn 1, so with the right deck you instawin every time (with a really op 1 cost or a black goat to get a 3 cost on turn 1)
@@Epsicronicsit's kind of on you if you have 5 pelts in your deck. You got screwed over by rng, but deckbuilders are designed around creating strategies to minimize rng and maximize consistency. If you put 5 useless cards in your deck, you can't really be surprised when they show up. The game didn't secretly add them, you chose to buy a bunch of pelts without the guarantee of a trader. If I just add every card to my deck without any care for synergy, it's technically rng whether I win or not, but you can see how it's still my fault when I lose
@@mcswashbuckler3833 The trader was 1 fight away god damnit 😭 And yeah i get it but 5 pelts IN A ROW? in a deck of more than 10 no less, of which any could've saved me

Fun fact: I got stuck on act 1 for hours on end too. Using the knife every run. I didn't understand that the game wanted me to lose in order to continue.
I think it's so funny that people complain about being bad at the game when it's literally coded to give you OP shit. Almost every playthrough of the game I've seen has had some type of OP card, usually relating to the death cards, uyaruli, or the persistant ouroborus. They literally hard coded the game to be easy as fuck
Your ourborus in act 3 literally keeps it's stats from act 2 Just get 17 skeletons, an ouroborus an emperor's pets and a necromancer in the second act. Ouroborus farm
Yeah I just beat act 1 tonight for the first time on my third ever run with the strategic assistance of my friend (with my adhd my memory is bad and I can forget card and gameplay mechanics mid-fight) with death touch stitched Mantis God (from a trade of a golden pelt the Mycologists stitched) and Ant-producing squirrels (and of course their Ants). Hadn't seen Ouroboros yet, although he was a treat when I watched aforementioned friend play and got familiar with the first and second acts and then some of the third act. The Trapper got me in my second run due to a combo of forgetting what cards do and inexperience and he about got me in the third run were it not for me asking my friend for help on what to do. Leshy was a cakewalk, I just had to ask what the Moon yanked into orbit and under what conditions. Undying Squirrels were my favorite from my friend's gameplay. I was giggling a lot tonight over the evil combinations of sigils and health buffs I was conceiving, laughed at my own forgetting, and was ecstatic to see Goobert, get Magnificus's eye, and see him as Stunted Wolf again. It's hard at first, but once you start getting the op stuff it's hilarious. Trapper's whooping me in act two still lol.
like,i beat the first act with a card that spawned automaticaly after other card gets destroyed, but also created a copy of itself in my hand after being put down. it was a constant cycle of "card atacks - card gets destroyed - card copy spawn"
The funny thing to me about the people complaining about files being deleted is that, unless I'm forgetting, you get to choose the files you put on the line
They also do not get deleted, the game is not allowed to do that, it leaves you a cute lil "I cant delete this actually but you be a good sport and do it for me" type text file instead lol
P03 tells you to pick an old file, only threatening to delete it after picking. So no, you don’t really get to choose since you don’t know what your choosing it for. Honestly reviews like this don’t surprise me, as some people might not have experience with meta video games and might not know the extent of what games can do.
The people freaking out about needing to sacrifice the talking cards (even though they always come back) are kind of funny to me. Cause like, I get it, but thats just part of the game, they aren't real. I get emotionally attached to the Companion Cube every time I play Portal but I still incinerate it, because I have to, and I feel sad about it every time, but thats just how the game is. Also because I actually don't feel bad when I sacrificed the stoat or stinkbug because P03 is a jerk and Grimora wants to die
The funny thing is, that dilemma is probably part of the point here. Yeah, they're talking, "sentient" beings- beings that feel everything that happens to them no less, and when you get the option to sacrifice them for the first time, there's this moment of whether you're REALLY willing to sacrifice something that is for all intents and purposes *alive* (in the context of the game world, granted) in order to beat the game... And then it all resets, win or lose. You're hit with the reality that, *even in the context of the game world*, it's all just a game and resets back to square one after every run. TLDR; A choice being hard can be the point, it shouldn't be a turn-off if it has a reason to be there
Yeah I feel bad when I sacrifice the talking cards (not so much for Magnificus; worst advisor ever), but I like that I feel something about it. This game made me feel things. Shaking Leshy's hand in the finale, the Kaycee's mod devlogs, seeing Royal get to finally become a boss, all these things made me feel genuine emotion, and I commend any game that does that.
@@rizu-kun9687I actually think the Leshy part of the finale is beautiful. I’m not one for analysing design but for all of the third act and Grimora’s little section,it’s been greys, blues and greens (cold colours). @@lordhellstrande2763 And at least the more you do in Act 1, the more help you get for later runs. Binding of Isaac purposely makes the game harder every so often by adding bad items into the game when you win.

@@ettolrahC1Or he hasn't figured out the puzzles. To be fair, I tried to brute force through the act for a while. Got like 6 victories against Leshy before actually beating the act.
To be fair, I kinda agree with 1:20. Not to a point of calling the game trash, but I was really liking the rogue-lite part of the game and when I got to make an overpowered card and beat the game I liked a lot, it threw me into a weird rpg with more complicated and not as fun gameplay where I kinda lost my drive to play further. I wish I could've gone back to the original game and keep exploring the little house instead.
Act 2 is definitely an afterthought, love the story aspect of it, sorta disliked it at first, found it somewhat fun by the end, Act 3 is loads of fun tho
@@Epsicronics Act 2 is certainly not an afterthought. It plays out like an old card collection deckbuilder game, like the old Yugioh ds games. It does a very good job at it and you can make some pretty cool decks and synergies. I think the step away from roguelike, into RPG-deckbuilder was fun, especially since it felt like I was actually constructing a deck rather than just getting cards and hoping for good luck. I love act 1 just as much as anyone else, but I don't think act 2 deserves any hate.
I think it actually did take me over 8 hours (a few weeks at least) to beat leshy's act. but the learning curve is so crazy that after playing kaycee's mod and going back I can't believe I ever struggled with it?
Do the people who really think their files got deleted not even check there computer to make sure the file is gone? Because I can't imagine not doing that but clearly they didn't go to check and see that they werent deleted.
1:42 I half expected this to be a positive review. When I pointed out the game was blatantly cheating to the person who recommended it to me she said "well yeah!" Once I stopped trying to play fair and counter cards, instead win by any means possible, the more broken the better, I did great.
Honestly though? I think the complaint at 1:14 is totally fair. Obviously the second half is a bit silly, but I definitely _almost_ dropped the game during the start of the second act. While I did find it enjoyable after a while, it's such a stark tonal shift and is NOT how the game is advertised. (Totally fair, because that would diminish the shock value, but it's still absent regardless.) Despite my eventual enjoyment, I'd still definitely consider it the game's lowest point for me personally. I wanted spooky YuGiOh, and right as it seemed like things were REALLY gonna pick up, they instead picked North-East and hecking ran with it. Still a great game and worth sticking with it throughout, but as someone who was quite attached to what Act 1 was building up, I can totally understand how the blindside that is Act 2 could totally turn someone away from the game, since the only way to go back to what made the game special is to slog through what you don't enjoy.
I think It has to do with the fact all these different ideas totems ,character pieces and all that are shown and you get cuck out of It for well a very meta game. It would not of been so bad If you actually did the song and dance of Act 1 vs all the other game masters and play vs their styles of DMing..But, instead you got Leashie's good first act, a game boy section, then P.O.E. It is weird, cause it felt It did not cling to the devs meta narrative It would of been one hell of a game.
Yea i think Act 1 and the demo "sacrifices must be made" that act 1 was made off of, was by far the strongest part of the game. And i think it was completely wasted potential to move away from the more subtle horror aspects of "sacrifices must be made", where you play a card game with an isolated man after your plane crashes in exchange for food. For the ARG that the gave dev shoved into the game. Having a fully fleshed out game work with and continue off where the game jam game ended would've been so interesting.
If you look at the Dev page for literally a few minutes, you can see they made Pony Island, a game exactly like this one. And another game that was ALSO exactly like this one.
@doubleaabattery7562 That's fair, although having now played through Pony Island, I feel like the tonal shift in Inscryption is kind of on another level. It feels like the entire game they've been building up completely comes crashing down and turns into this new thing that loses the charm of what came before. Now I definitely came around and honestly really enjoy the second act, but MAN did it lose me for a bit. Pony Island sets up its premise and its twist, and then just escalates from there, rather than suddenly experiencing a MAJOR shift. Haven't played through The Hex yet so we'll see how that compares, but even then, I don't particularly think it's fair to expect people to predict a twist based on a creator's other works rather than the work itself
@@kashino55archive94 When literally all the games are the same premise and in the same universe it starts to become more of a you problem, but understandable
tbf 1:18 i agree, the pixel top-down movement stage was kind of disappointing to transfer to after playing the first stage, because the first stage is absolutely insane. I found 2nd boring in comparison. luckily the 3rd stage is very similar to the first.
Yeah, stage 2 felt more like a “Oh right we should probably connect the two acts we have into a coherent story” rather than something the devs really cared about making fun. It’s why people always adore Kaycee’s mod and want a version of it for Act 3, but never bring up Act 2 in the conversation.
@@Mjgaming54321 from a gameplay standpoint maybe but lore wise it is very important and it also adds to the theme of the game going over all the types of card games it is still a bridge between the two but it def has more reasons to exist
@@Mjgaming54321 Act 2 is worse than the other two... Thats the point. It's a clunky 90s card game for lore reasons, and the act mainly focuses on lore This game IS an ARG after all, the plot has been the focus since day 0.
if you are a card game player you realise just how much free stuff the game gives you and how easy it is to abuse them items for example most people use them in moments when they really don't need them
I found the game too easy. Apart from act 1 and its mechanic of blocking my progress if I didn't lose at least once on purpose. Kaycee's mod was the minimum difficulty I expected.
In act 2 i tried the undead deck, saw how dhit it is , changed to beast, and filled my deck with warrens and urayulis and squirrels, ez . 11/10 can recommend
I almost left the game a bad review because I spent 13 hours stuck at Act 1 until I picked it up again several months later so I can see WHY people love it so much. After finishing the entire game, I want to forget it and re-experience everything again.
Giving games a second chance should be way more normal than it actually is. I remember picking up Hollow Knight and getting 2-3 hours in before putting it down because it wasn't really clicking with me. 8 months later, I tried it again and became obsessed with it for a solid 4 months. Sometimes things you come to adore just don't mesh right away.
The game doesn't even delete your real files it adds another file that is supposed to look like a deleted file but when you look at it it says P03 didnt manage to get enough permissions to delete a file
The random weird RPG complaint is completely fair. People like Leshy. 90% of people when they realize they are forced into the rest try to do the remaining much quicker. Literally the common advice is just to cheese act 2 because it is the low point. The actual fun parts are Leshy and P03. (I would not mind a P03 mod like Kaycee's)
“Cards talk to you and people with empathy will struggle”. (Plays Stoat) “Wow bro, that was such a misplay. My grandma could make better plays than you…..” …….. “I sacrifice Squirrel and Stoat to play Ouroboros”! “You bastard I’ll ki-“ (Poof)
The game actually doesn't delete the file if you lose the hostage file card... Its legally not allowed. It does however create a word doc saying you should delete it yourself to be a fair sport in the file location, so really its not a criticism but a showcase of the games code.
Adding in my own review here, because I have a couple things to say about inscryption. It is a beautiful masterpiece for those with hyper or obsessive brains who like to figure out mystery. I love playing this game and the strategy I had to use made it feel like I was playing up against real people. Not to mention if you are advancing too quickly in the game the characters will baby rage and play cards that you really just can’t beat. It’s hilarious, it’s like playing against angry guards… Which is essentially what they are. Got through the whole game and I’m trying to get into Kaycee’s mod I have 16+ hours in the game. And tbh if you can’t play the game in the time I had ( I’m horrible at video and card games as well as math) then I don’t know what you are doing wrong. Maybe I was lucky? But I doubt that because this game kicked my ass many times as well. My strategy? Use every failure as a learning opportunity and you can become the Ultimate Carder (True fans of the story will understand that joke at the end) Oh! And one more thing- I played this game on my Nintendo switch, so the only files that were used/deleted (none were actually deleted) were Nintendo pictures and my switch friends. A lot less loss playing Incryption that way
Love the guy who said the game deleted his NFT. Like, bro... as soon as you find out your file will be "deleted" if that card dies, you just DON'T PLAY THAT CARD, especially if the file you linked it to is that important
Eh, i mean its part of the world building, and its design is there to actually introduce mechanics and show what kind of GM Leshy is so its honestly not terrible. Although getting a really good first run does sting a bit.
@@Epsicronics i pretty sure it’s obvious the game didn’t want you to beat act 1 on your first try judging by so many times the game throws scripted losses at you. every grizzly
@@Epsicronics I mean if you have a really good first run you might just beat the wall of grizzlies. You can beat act 1 without ever dying if you're good enough

It took me 20 hours before i got to act 2. Genuinly thought the entire game was just the first act over and over so I can kinda understand some of these reviews lol.
Played it, beat it, played the mod dlc, stopped playing because the mod dlc just feels like a puzzle that if you make a single wrong choice in then you lose, to the point where I was tempted to look it up and see if there was a guide, but also due to the semi-random layout that is probably impossible or just vary difficult.
Steam reviews in a nutshell: Make up whatever random bullshit nonsense you can think of an post it as a thumbs down. Half if not most of these feel more like user error than anything else.
@1:00 honestly, I'm more annoyed that you have to die a couple of times in act 1 to progress. I love this game and I've gotten like 115 hours in a 1.5 weeks, I'd just love to be able to do a lossless run of the story.
the first act is special. Unlike the others which are very basic. I haven't found the logic yet. No one or wiki to explain it to me. If at least the death cards had an interest for act 2 or 3, but not even that.
in the archivist bossfight they say they will delete the files, but they cant or it would considered malware and would be banned, instead they make a file saying that they cant and that you should play by the rules and delete yourself, also, if you're impatient this game is not for you, it took me 6 hours to complete kaycee mod challenge level one, it took me 6 because i found a way to not die, if i didnt find that hack, it would have taken me at least 8 hours, maybe more
I love the guy that tried to say that empathetic people would hate the game but my introduction to it was markiplier who is one of the best people on the planet and he loved it.

@@Epsicronics While rng will always be a factor in the game, a large part of the game is trying to minimise that RNG - a lot of players will use stuff like campfires and even sacrifices just to get rid of cards, because having a smaller deck is more consistent and easier to play around (hey, P03 was right on that front)
That’s why most Skull Storm strats involve having only one 1 cost card, because they abuse the game logic that forces drawing one of them on turn 1, so with the right deck you instawin every time (with a really op 1 cost or a black goat to get a 3 cost on turn 1)

People will always ask for an easy mode utnil the game plays itself. Then they will complain its boring or too easy.
Your ourborus in act 3 literally keeps it's stats from act 2
Just get 17 skeletons, an ouroborus an emperor's pets and a necromancer in the second act.

@@Epsicronics I mean, depending on what the file is, leaving text files in random places can potentially be just as bad.
@@AztecCroc I don’t think they leave the text files in random places. Idk I’m not sure tho
P03 tells you to pick an old file, only threatening to delete it after picking. So no, you don’t really get to choose since you don’t know what your choosing it for. Honestly reviews like this don’t surprise me, as some people might not have experience with meta video games and might not know the extent of what games can do.

P03: What the #%$& is your search history man?!
That's called Kaycee's mod. It's not a mod, it's a extra mode of the game.
You can unlock Kaycee's Mod by beating the game or by pressing Shift+K+M on the menu
Act 2 is definitely an afterthought, love the story aspect of it, sorta disliked it at first, found it somewhat fun by the end, Act 3 is loads of fun tho
The good news is, Kaycee's mod is that first part but a more proper roguelike, very cool
@@Epsicronics Act 2 is certainly not an afterthought. It plays out like an old card collection deckbuilder game, like the old Yugioh ds games. It does a very good job at it and you can make some pretty cool decks and synergies. It can't even delete your files, it just puts a text document saying "I can't delete that, please do it for me"
Honestly though?

Use every failure as a learning opportunity and you can become the Ultimate Carder (True fans of the story will understand that joke at the end)
Oh! And one more thing- I played this game on my Nintendo switch, so the only files that were used/deleted (none were actually deleted) were Nintendo pictures and my switch friends. A lot less loss playing Incryption that way
