Why Batman's Arkham Series has one of Gaming's Greatest Combat Systems - Art of the Level

- Somehow the Batman combat system in Arkham Asylum managed to be one of the greatest gaming has ever created, but if you look backward from August 24th, 2009, you will find a long list of bad Batman games in your rearview mirror. A series long-applauded in comics, TV, and movies was mired in mediocrity when it came to video games. Batman on Genesis was fine. Batman: The Rise of Sin Tzu looked pretty good for its time but offered little else. And let’s not even talk about Batman: Dark Tomorrow. Fun fact: we gave that game a 2.2 and it’s still not IGN’s worst-rated Batman game. There were a few gems here and there, but a lot of it was… not great.
Batman deserved better. Batman fans deserved better. And on August 25th, 2009, we didn’t just get a good Batman game. We got one of the greatest comic book games ever created up to that point. And some would say that even now. With great stealth mechanics, a grimy, well-realized world, and even most of the voice cast reprising their roles from the eminent animated series, Batman had finally arrived to the gaming space in a manner befitting the Dark Knight: seemingly out of nowhere. But the real standout in a game full of already fantastic high points was its combat systems and we’re going to talk about how the devs at Rocksteady Studios created one of gaming’s all-time great combat systems.
Sure, one of the major triumphs of Arkham Asylum was the return of the voice cast like Mark Hamill (Joker) and Bruce Timm (Batman/Bruce Wayne) from Batman: The Animated Series. But the combat system in Batman Arkham Asylum was such a large contributing factor to the success of the game that it was expanded upon but never replaced in future titles like Arkham City, Arkham Origins, and Arkham Knight.

This was the benchmark for superhero games, the Arkham series was awesome.
Origins and knight dropped the ball imo
@@JohnnyWizgetcrunk you sound goofy asf
@@JohnnyWizgetcrunk if Knight cut the Batmobile it woulda been the best superhero game ever. But that mechanic ruined it by how hard they tried to make us use it
@@PICFL1 maybe not cut the batmobile but cut down the uses in fights especially with the Deathstroke fight.

Arkhams combat has always felt amazing. Felt amazing as a 9 year old playing Arkham asylum for the first time. Still feels amazing as a 20 year playing all these games for the 13th time
what's your fastest timing to beat the whole game?
This games combat system is not only amazing but it makes you feel and think like Batman. You have to think about your next target. And you feel like a badass taking on 10 to 100 thugs.
Those dudes he had to fight were scary. We’re talking about Gotham City’s craziest, looniest people. Even Batman had to be a little spooked.
@@DialloMoore503 Batman getting spooked? Nah.

This Series will ALWAYS be the best Superhero videogames of all time
Nah bro that would be Insomniac’s Spider-Man series
@@aa_ron6978 No
Always? That's a pretty short sighted statement
@@aa_ron6978 ironic choice, since the combat system borrowed so heavily from the Arkhan games
@@aa_ron6978, not that overrated game...
I've always loved the combat system in the Batman: Arkham games.
Yes, arkham knight had the best combat mechanics in the series, very smooth and quick, every button had its purpose and combination with other buttons
It’s fun but overrated. Way too easy for me.
@@somerandom414 overrated? That’s the first I’ve ever heard that
Because you played it on easy
@@love6ic202 That’s What makes it overrated. No one ever constructively criticizes it so they made the same game over and over with a lil more open world..
love that they released this right before gotham knights release 🤣🤣
Lmao
yea they not slick lmao
such a game changing trilogy
Quadrilogy 👀 don’t let rocksteady convince you otherwise

@@kurgerbing6593 Arkham origins was great

Arkham City & Knight’s combat system was so damn smooth. Made you feel great and so satisfied.
The Arkham games are awesome AF.
I'd like to see similar combat with the Turtles in an open world game done by Rocksteady. Esp now with showing the 4 player co op in Gotham Knights.
Yo a Ninja Turtles game will be dope as hell by Rocksteady bro
The combat system for the ps2 turtles game was fire if y’all remember that
@@giantssfcentral which one? The first one?
tmnt out of the shadows has arkham combat.
word bro
Not only the Combo’s but the all 4 games in general are the best

free flow was an amazing feeling
Asylum is still untouchable to me. The next game improved on the gameplay mechanics, but the linear structure and focused story, great atmosphere and dark tone just made Asylum a unique gem.
Great video, bringing in lots of external references to other games and movies etc., loved watching this video. Very well done
arkham city combat with arkham asylum ragdolls, arkham knight graphics. That would be TOP tier right there
Well Arkham Knight combat had lots of improvements if compared to city, for me, a slow paced arkham knight combat without those giant thugs would be awesome for a next arkham game
dont forget origins boss fights
This video was created because they are disappointed in the combat system for Gotham Knights
DON'T MAKE ME REPLAY THE ARKHAM SERIES AGAIN!
Well, I'd rather replay the series than waste my money and time on that worthless game called Gotham Knights
This feels like low-key shade being thrown at Gotham Knights haha
One hell of a series for great combat. Enjoyed a lot
Fear is a Tool ...
Its always great to see Arkham's combat system get the recognition it deserves it's fun and challenging. Ive played so many other games and the combat has always fallen short. The enemies always feel weightless and the healthbars make it feel like a chore to fight just to get to the next area when playing.
And they had to drop it before Gotham Knights releases, right? -_-
Exactly.
Yes, so people can see how Gotham knights could have been
What a nice middle finger to gotham knights ☺
That game look so clunky to me lol
Yessirr
Hit y to counter when prompted until they’re all dead, how revolutionary
This was a great video. Thanks!
This is natGeo quality, thanks IGB for everything
Would love to see the Dark Deco world of Eric Rodamski and Bruce Timm's Batman the Animated Series explored in a Marvel's Guardian of the Galaxy-style game.
They teased us with the 3D intro of Batman Mask of the Phantasm, but they didn't have to tech for a beautiful open world or action adventure game back then. The stuff in the Arkham games is cool, but the architecture and whatnot is completely different from BTAS's depression era art deco and German Expressionism that they used based some on the Tim Burton films with their own flavor mixed in.
Freeflow combat is so satisfying
One of my most iconic childhood memories is when Batman got his hands on talia’s sword….. Ooooooo buddy that hormone high was like nothing else 😂😂😂😂
As someone who is going back through Arkham Origins right now this video is coming at a great time. The combat still feels excellent!
They teach the combat systems and the physics of the Cape in Gaming Development....that's how much they nailed it
"It's the freaking Bat 🦇!"- Thug #2
The Arkham games spoiled us all.. Let's not cap. We judge every potential superhero game that came after them based off these games. We can't even be 100% excited for Gotham knights cause it's not Arkham. Damn you Batman😂😂
Kinda wished Gotham Knights was set in the Arkham verse so they could've just carried over (and maybe even improve) the combat system from those games.
Im calling it now.. they for sure made this as a knock on gotham knights combat… watch the review tomorrow, we will see what they say 😮
The Golden Age of Gaming
Imagine a new Final Fight game with this combat
Didn’t IGN post this video already?
Cause it's make you FEEL like batman
It really make you FEEL like batman right IGN?
This comment really makes me FEEL like I'm listening to a broken record.
Best Hand to Hand Combat ever
The only other game that came close was assassin's creed 3 combat...
Lol play better fighting games.
Everyone of these games deserves a remaster.
does anyone know if these are very stable on PC now? Just got a new set up and would love to play all of these at least at 60 fps.
Getting the freeflow achievement in Arkham games was one of the best challenge you can get.
so excited to see how the story continues in the next game! and how the combat will be
There is no next game
@@abdurrahim7539 suicide squad kill the justice league is set in the same universe apparently
Arkham Knight is the final entry of the series though. There will be no next Arkham Game. We stucked with Gotham Knight which is far mile away from the Arkham Games.

You called Bruce Timm the voice actor for Batman in the caption. It's Kevin Conroy.
The flow of clmbat, the satifying combat and the setting just fits
Amazing fantastic love it thank you for video love the games
Why Batman Arkham collection not coming to the switch?
Prince of Persia the warrior within was the first to do free flow combat
Why yall got 50 ads in one video😐
So freaking awesome
This is what IGN is about like old times… The best what IGN CAN DO YOU GO ON GUYS!!!!
This is natGeo quality, thans sonny for everything
The Batman Arkham combat system was incredible!!
One of the best games of my teenagehood!
It’s probably the best combat, but it still has flaws. Sometimes it would target someone across the room and sometimes it wouldn’t even target a person 5 feet from you.
Fr, sometimes batman would punch the air instead of the thug 2 feet apart from him
@@joaopaulogalloclaudino9671 Batman has frog kumite.
I've noticed that pretty much only in Asylum, glad they fixed that in City
Let’s not forget that the free flow system was derived from the Assassins Creed original Trilogy 👀, and Shadow of Mordor took everything else 😅
Batman Returns on SNES was legendary 🔥🔥🔥
Ultimate Spider-Man spider-sense mechanic: 👀
Nah
Now IGN is talking
Sleeping dogs is pure marital art...played BATMAN ARKHAM series and Sleeping Dogs too but gonna say both are different... sleeping dogs is art actually.
"It's the bats!!!!"
Such a great combat system, freeflow made the game's unforgetable. Without it we wouldn't have had Spiderman ps4 and with it we see how garbage the combat in Gotham Knights is.
It's just a click of few buttons on the right timing for a series of combo. Oh well
Ain't no school Better than the Old school
Interesting that this retrospective came out within hours of Kinda Funny's
Excellent game series and excellent video.
Makes you wonder how they took such a massive step back
bcuz it was, it has and it will be 😌😌😌
Arkham series definitely mastered the free flow combat, but it certainly wasn't the "first" have you heard of The Matrix: Path of Neo?
Constantine Rocksteady game man do it
Dropping this days before Gotham Knights releases? Shady asf LMFAO
I’m sorry, but did the video descriptions just say Bruce Timm voiced Batman/Bruce Wayne?!
Not one single mention of Prince of Persia The Sands of Time. That game invented this combat system...
Coming to Switch?? Please 🙏
I’m replaying Arkham knight right now on knightmare difficulty. Just to get ready for Gotham knights
The fact that Gotham Knights didn't use this combat system, or even a variant of it, is very dissapointing
Hell Yeah!
This series was a masterpiece. Still holds up better than most current gen unfinished, broken garbage.
Wolverine PS5 has some big shoes to fill lol. Also we need a Daredevil game with this kind of combat ASAP
Spiderman was fun combat wise
They should do a remaster o remake
How to play Archam Asylum to 120 fps?
This is how evening the odds began
0:59 drop the part about it being one of the greatest comic book games. It's one of the greatest games of all time period
Wait I've seen this video ! This is a reupload.
Wasn’t the combat inspired by the prince of Persia game?
But they should renew batman fighting animation
The True Inspiration for Matt Reeves The Batman movie!!!!
they should wait for when bane meet Ben Affleck
dini looks like schneider
What if they implement this combat system into batman begins

These badly need 60fps patches on new gen consoles.
Why Batman's arkham series has one of gaming's greatest combat system?
Because he is Batman!
it makes you feel like batman

Arkham City in my opinion is not just the best superhero game, but the one of the very best 7th gen games and one of the best games of all time. Arkham Asylum is also brilliant in laying that foundation.
