Speaking as an over the road truck driver for 35+ years, I would suggest going to just about any truck stop and purchase a GPS for a truck. The only difference between these and those RV systems is the campsite info. All you have to do one time only is to enter the height, the length, and the weight of your system. Once that is done, set your route to where you want tog, simply put in an address, and your good to go. One more fact, you can pay $500 or more for an RV GPS, or, simply pay around $300 to $400 for a good truck GPS. I wish all RVer's would do this. It would be just as good if not better than any RV GPS.
A very important fact when traveling back roads (especially in Texas), is the potential lack of cell service! It happened and was a little scarry pulling a 42'er. We love our Rand McNally RV tablet. Great display, easy to take out of vehicle, invaluable RV specific extras. Lovin' the LOLOHO!
I use a Garmin Nav. anytime I drive somewhere. I don't need it for *every* travel situation, but with everything programmed in, it provides me with a reference point to where I need to go. It's not perfect for *every* navigational needs, but again, for reference and help finding the closest place to where I'm going, it's perfect for me. :)
My favorite navigation system is a $30.oo Windows phone from Amazon with Here maps. Works for Canada, USA and Mexico. Maps are pre-installed and it works on satellite only. Because it's satellite I never have to worry about losing a cell phone connection or my data usage. Works for my budget. :)

Thanks!! We are not full-timers but we love taking out the RV anytime we can. Over the years the low bridges seem to find us quite regularly so before our next trip we'll be investing in the RV GPS.
The other big issue with using your phone is being out of service areas. I believe Smart Phones use a combination of GPS and Cell Tower to determine location. When the Cell towers are gone you're not getting localized updates and you're left with knowing that your car is driving on a road and that's about it. Who knows if you are the right direction. Erg!
When we were on the Hawaii we hit huge pockets of dead coverage areas and often wondered if were going the right way. It made for lots a awesome side stops along the way. (Not a great time saver) The same goes for west Texas towards the Big Bend area. So we still carry a map in case of a Zombie Apocalypse. LOL

We have the Garmin RV specific model. We like it and feel it keeps us out of trouble. That said, we do get a Unknown RV accessibility warning pretty frequently which is unnerving
Great Info and right where my head is right now. In our motorhome we have used Microsoft Streets & Trips on a tablet which I loved along with the Garmin. But MS quit supporting it and our MH is off to a new owner. Now we have a new travel trailer and need a new garmin in the PU. I'll be looking at the reviews and comments. Thanks LoLoHo
I also use Truckers Map. You can find them in any Truck Stop. It will have Roads marked and a section on Low Bridges. Being a Retired Over the road Trucker. I use a map more than any other thing. Old School maybe ? When you two Love Birds getting back on the Road ? And How's the Foot coming along ?

My initial plan on buying a travel trailer did not include a GPS, as I was going to use my I-Phone. However, your video (with its logical advice) has swayed me.
FYI, many cell phone GPS apps allow you to pre-load the maps. So if you lose cell signal you can still navigate!
Sean, my tow vehicle has a factory nav system integrated into the stereo system that has many of the features you mentioned that are included in the RV specific Garmin. We used it to travel from Seattle to Springfield MA last summer and Little Rock AR the year prior, only to find it to be just as useful as the RV types. While it didn't cover low clearances, we didn't really have to worry about them since the only place we really got off the main highways was in upstate NY where it told us to expect tolls on I-90, which we already knew about from a prior trip, and from Branson MO to Little Rock. I learned not to totally trust a GPS years ago when I had to use one for work. It, more often that not, would send me down roads that were blocked off or went across private property. Needless to say, on our cross country trips, we use the nav system in conjunction with a trucker's road atlas
I use the Garmin RV 760LMT and it has been a life saver for us on our travels in our MH. I have had several over the years and this is the best one by far. Keep you off roads were you may get into trouble. So many features I could not begin to describe them. Kind of pricy but worth every penny.

Avoiding toll roads is huge. I didn't know this but I get charged almost double the passenger car rate in my Dodge Promaster. Don't know what you get charged with a trailer but suspect it's at least double. Back roads are better anywYs! Thanks for the advice!

Garmin GPS units work well. I have been using my Motorcycle garmin. I allows me to specify a lot of the same things a rv unit would. I can review my route on Good Sam or Google maps and download the route. Thanks for the info.
The name if that covered bridge "Lows Bridge" LOL. If I went a across that bridge in my RV it wouldn't be covered anymore!

If you hit a bridge, you are on the hook for the damage to the bridge too. Most low bridges are old and brittle; the cost of the repair could easily be more than the amount you are insured for.
Good advice! I just bought a Garmin nuvi 55 LM for $98- on amazon with free lifetime maps. I would have gone for the traffic feature, but one of the reviews said you need a separate traffic receiver. Also, the 55LM is not RV specific.

Do RV GPS units also avoid roads where propane tanks aren't allowed - such as those with tunnels?
I recently used my phone for a gps which is usually awesome on a trip to and from Portland , Oregon. It was often wrong, telling me to turn here and there and the streets were obviously not through streets and such. We had some RV friends who pull a Holiday Rambler Presidential 5th wheel, with a Dodge Ram , give us their old TomTom, it was still in the box barely if ever used. I love it! Very similar to the Garmin, more of a square then a rectangle. It replaces a TomTom I had for 10 years. Simple to use. Even had a day where we were traveling and got nothing from any satellites on the phone. Pulled over and plugged in the old TomTom and made it home out of a spiders web of confusing overlapping highways! I'm sure Garmin is awesome but I'm sticking to the TomTom.
All of this is solid information. What about knowing your overall weight? Going over that covered bridge looked neat, but what was it's weight rating and how much do truck and trailer weigh? Any weigh station can scale your rig so you know exactly where you stand... F.y.i my 2003 F-250, extended cab, 4x4, with 5.4 weights 6340lbs with me in it.
So right about the low bridges, lots of railroad bridges, even in rural Illinois and other places in the midwest. Do a CZcams search for 11ftoot8 and watch some of the videos, many RV's along with semis and box trucks. One tall fiver slows to a crawl as if that will help the situation, and rips off the A/C units on top. I have measured my Winnebago View, its 11 foot 6 inch to the top of the antenna, highest point.

one thing I do is put GPS coordinates from google earth in my Garmin. If you mouse over some place you want to go on Google earth, it will show you the coordinates at the bottom of the page. You will have to leave off the last number but it will get you within 50 feet of your destination.
+MrMark85044 Yes, good advice. We once had a situation in which the ADDRESS of a campground led us to the wrong part of town (GPS got badly confused) but GPS coordinates will never lead you astray.
Yeah I have had our Android phone take us through some back roads I would not have preferred to go down. I'm still stubborn about purchasing a dedicated gps. I will probably wait until I get in a really bad spot then decide it's time.

I have been using my faithful old Nokia 900 Windoze cell phone periodically for GPS with success usually.
It gives a GPS map position ok but when suggesting routes, it can plot a route 300 miles long around the state just to go to the store a mile away.
Sometimes it doubles as good comic relief and a GPS.

I don't know if it is just my GPS (Magellian). It works great if you set it and do not touch it again, but if you try to change volume or a ser ring then the unit goes crazy, putting in opposite directions or putting the direction you are going at the bottom of the screen.
You then have to stop and reprogram your destination.
I would add that another disadvantage to using your smartphone's GPS is that it will use data as long as you are connected unless you enjoy unlimited data. Even then, when using an unlimited data plan, most carriers like to dumb down your speed when you reach a certain amount of usage. So if you want to use your data for internet or whatever later, you might expect to do it slower and less efficiently. I travel alone, and it takes me almost 3 days to travel from here, (Minnesota) to South Florida
and I don't want to be using data for 3 days. A trip that I do often.
I have tested a couple of RV specific Units and although the idea is great, the rerouting off roads to avoid obstacles that turns out not to be a concern at all is more common than expected with both brands..
I find a good passenger car unit and keeping aware of surroundings to be the best option.
Until the US infrastructure is updated accurately in the RV specific GPS software expect to make unnecessary detours during your trip. The units error on the side of safety which isn't all bad, just frustrating ..
What is your favorite app for finding campgrounds? You mentioned it is a previous video but I cannot remember it. Many thanks for hours of entertainment and good tips.
the only dislike I have with my Garmin is the rerouting...sends me either way out of the way or tries to get me back on the road I'm trying to get off of..if that makes sense!

I had a job interview in the Seattle last year and had left my smart phone in the car back in Connecticut. I rented a Garmin GPS from the car rental agency and it lost signal completly for a short bit on the way from the airport to the hotel, kept telling me that I had arrived at my destination after passing it and on the way to the job interview, told me to navigate off road across train tracks. I got a refund for the GPS rental and will not likely purchase a Garmin in the future.

Another problem with cell phone GPS is you need cell service to operate.. not all areas have reliable service...
I've watched a bunch of videos on the rv gps's. What's the difference between the 760 and the 770 rv gps and what's the difference between the bc20 and the bc30 back up cameras?

So i have a older terry travel i use for work 6 months out of the year. I am actually looking to buy a newer one to take the wife around the country the other 6 months of the year. any suggestions on what to look for when buying a new travel trailer. also is there anything you would personally avoid when buying an rv. just would like to hear your thoughts.
From my research, and experience an actual Global Positioning System (GPS), and a smart phone, are two completely different animals. When my phone (tower based) losses cell signal I'm in the dark as far as navigation, however my gps (satellite based) runs strong. I travel on a motorcycle and have experienced this many times on the highways of the Ca. Coast. Most interstates have good cell signal but when I get off the beaten track I loose cell quickly. Others may have a different experiences, but for me GPS.
+grey man I still have the Tom Tom app on my iphone for that very reason. The issue with most GPS apps is that they do not store the map information on your phone which is why you need a cell tower for data. The Tom Tom app allows you to download the whole USA map. I had the Tom Tom app before Apple Maps came out and while I have not had issues with Apple Maps I have kept Tom Tom for those times cell signal is weak or non existent.
I really would like to find a GPS app for the iphone with RV options but I am not finding one.

We enjoy your channel very much but I have never seen a review or any information about TT Tire Monitoring Systems. Has LoLoHo ever used aTMS? What are your thoughts on them. We see many tire disasters on the side of the road as we travel.
Love your videos. I have a Garmin nuvi and the one thing I hate about it is when I plug it in to charge it it thinks that I'm hooking up to a computer and takes forever to figure out that it's just charging. It's useless while this is going on. So I use the phone. I sure wish they'd update the firmware to give a quick choice of Charge or Computer link

Hi,,, Why don't you'al have a "Cap" on the back of your truck??? It would keep items dry and improve your fuel mileage... If you are concerned about running your Generator, enclosed in the back of your truck, just open the Caps "Sliding Front Window" and it's "Sliding Side Windows" and it's "Rear Flip Up Door"... It work's for us... Keep your Videos coming...

+Jackson Sheesley The main reason has been our generator. that thing weighs 150 pounds, so we usually keep it in the bed of the truck. If we could install a bed cap and continue using our generator in the same fashion, I would probably do it.
Use Google Maps and download what you need. Keep it locally on you phone.

I see the last communication here was 2 years ago...so I don't know if you'll get this, or if it's the best source for a question, but I 'did' use your store to just order our own GPS..that being the Garmin 770 RV Navigator! There was nothing I could see that showed it was linked to you in any way, but I did click on the link on your website, so hopefully it will be of some support to you guys. Be safe, be free! how about where to store your rv?
CoPilot for Android has maps built in and goes on sale for $2.99 here and there. Gives you all the same options your garmin has, including entering height of your rig (not very fine grained but good enough unless you're taller than 13' 6"). It also lets you select your road type preferences.
The interface sucks and maps for other countries than the USA and Canada cost WAY too much ($40 for Europe?!) but honestly, those are my only complaints. Well, traffic avoidance should be cheaper too, IMHO, but that feature isn't available if you don't have cell service anyways.
As for mounting your cell, that's easy. And for powering it, you can buy 10 foot USB cables for under $5, just connect them to a cigarette lighter adapter. You can still run a music app if you want tunes while you drive and you can still receive/make calls. Of course you can't mess with the phone while you're in the GPS app (well, you can, but then obviously guidance will be rather compromised) but the driver shouldn't be touching the phone anyways!
I recommend combining that with a stereo that supports Bluetooth audio. Then you've got the best of everything!

I'd assumed I would continue to keep things simple and just use my iPhone, but it hadn't occurred to me before watching this that one's data plan is another consequence of using smart phones vs. a standalone GPS unit.
As much as I hate to add another gadget (with another interface, needing another power supply, etc) I may have to consider this when we're ready to hit the road again.
+Brad Cornelius Good point about the data plan. We are using an older cellphone plan that's rather generous with data, but there's no doubt GPS apps eat data as well as battery life. I think we'll end up getting a new 'el cheapo' Garmin, since our ancient old unit is now having trouble finding satellites.
+Long Long Honeymoon - overcharged phone battery from being plugged in all day - yet another good point. Factor in the low cost and unique features, and they surely make a better sacrificial lamb, working on the hot dashboard while your smartphone stays cool and relaxed in the cup holder, as God intended.
+Brad Cornelius You can get offline GPS apps for your cellphone where you pre-download all the maps ahead of time. Of course, you'll want to do that while on unlimited WiFi somewhere (campground, McDonald's, Starbucks, etc). Most of the offline apps cost money, so have a good look. Copilot and Sygic are two off the top of my head.
+shepd3 Thanks! Many people are beginning to incorporate tablets (iPad Mini, etc) into their dashboards in order to control music, driving directions, etc. Obviously voice control is another great feature for this setting. Your suggestions would dovetail into this nicely, too.

Agreed, If no cell service then no GPS. I found this out going through the western mountains and Nat Parks. Even here in NC there is no signal everywhere.
Last fall I decided to purchase an RV specific GPS unit. I have owned many Garmin units over the years so I chose the Garmin RV 660 LMT. The features are there but there are many issues. I entered th detail on my tow vehicle and 33 ft travel trailer and used it in the RV mode for the last 6 months. The GOS took me in many locations that would have been dangerous if I had actually been towing. The RV 660 LMT is not one to buy.. I would highly discourage anyone from purchasing unless you want to buy mine.

+Long Long Honeymoon I agree with your statement that no GPS is to be completely trusted. I have the Garmin Dezl 760LM. It's supposed to be a RV/Truck type GPS. I don't like it for a number of reasons. It doesn't give me a whole lot of benefit except for the larger screen. The screen I like. However, it routes me on truck routes even when in the RV mode. It wouldn't take the shortest route in RV mode even though the shortest route was selected and was a perfectly good road. If I remember right, you have to put it in Automobile mode to make it take the shortest route. That negates any route protection it may provide for RV's and trucks.
I spent some time on the phone with a Garmin tech and they know there's an issue. Their resolve was to tag the specific road I had issues on and correct it in the next firmware push. No resolution for fixing the root problem. Now I usually take a second GPS an/or we use the cell phone in conjunction with the Garmin to get where we want to go. The cell phone eats data when navigating so we try to avoid using it.
I wouldn't recommend this unit either. I think all their truck/RV units have the same core firmware and fixing them would be costly. It's definitely not one you can have 100% confidence in. Who knows what other issues the unit might have, even with respect to road
restrictions. But what can you have 100% confidence in these days?? Just my opinion based on my experience with this unit.

Just watched this, cause we’re gearing up to maybe go full time. Or at least extended time. Have to say some of the reviews on Amazon were less than positive. So I’m not sure about this unit. In fact none of the RV GPS had great reviews. So you’ve had this for awhile how’s it working out. Would you buy one again? You seem tip top how’s the health?
Anyone know of any phone app that has RV navigation options built in? I have not been able to find one. After my last trip through a very tight downtown area I either need to find an app or buy a dedicated GPS.

Have you ever gotten into a situation where you went down a road somewhere and had to turn around when there was no place to? How did you get out of it? That's probably my one big concern with my RV travels.

I think you forgot to mention something. A GPS works off of satellites and phones work off of cell towers. A GPS is much better if you are in a place where cell towers are far and in between. Phones are great in town, but going from Alabama to New Mexico like I will in May, I'll be using GPS.

Another reason is some Parkways do not allow RV's at all.
Some tunnels mostly in the northeast don't allow propane tanks.

We carry one dedicated GPS (a Garmin) and also have a phone mount. We use the phone with our stereo / entertainment system (Apple CarPlay) to listen to music, etc.
Phone GPS' work great until you drive into an area with no cell phone service. Standalone GPS is the way to go when traveling cross county.
+LunaTune On cell phones you can pre load the maps so if you lose signal you can still navigate.
