You should try christmas and easterfood also... Ohh, wait.. We eat the same things then.
shallowlord no
No we dont, you listen to much to the media.
Edit. Well maybe you do though.
shallowlord lol;)
Hahahaha its fun cuz its true
What about Lingonsylt? :< Universal sauce to damn everything
Most of the traditional Swedish dishes you've had come from necessity of preserving food for seasons when the climate (and ice) made fishing impossible, at least in larger scale. Pickling or salting herring were two methods to preserve it. Smoking meat, like ham, was another method. Fresh vegetables, fruit etc were only availble in the summer, but some could be dried and saved for meals during the rest of the year. Potatoes could be stored in cool and dark cellars but the temperature had to be above the freezing point. Life in the past wasn't easy for a housewife. Now we can buy what we want in the grocery store twelve months a year, fresh, canned or deepfrozen.
That potatoe is waaaaay to big for midsummer, imho. Midsommer potatoes should be really small, like two centimeters in diameter tops, and covered in dill.
The key to learning to eat sill is to take just a small bite, together with a potato and a lot of sourcream and chives. I'm surprised you didn't have that, because that's a classic midsummer thing.
Those small sausages "prinskorvar" is christmas food where I live. Never had them on midsummer. But if you eat them they should be covered in skånsk senap, mustard from Scania.
We usually eat pickled herring, sourcream with chives, gubbröra on rye bread, gravlax, västerbottenpaj (a cheese pie with a special Swedish cheese called Västerbottensost, from Västerbotten northern Sweden. If you haven't tried that cheese yet you should. It's the best Swedish cheese. Perhaps make a cheese video where you test Swedish cheese?) and then a strawberry cake.
Åsa S your comments are greatly appreciated. I'm a 3rd generation product of Swedish and Norwegian immigrants to Minnesota and Wisconsin. I've enjoyed almost all of those foods because of the family history. I agree with you about the potato (no 'e,' BTW) Must have dill cream on new potatoes (add the extra for plural).
Thank you again
You're so welcome! And thanks for correcting my sloppy English, I've edited it now. I think it's soo cool that a lot of Americans with Swedish heritage still care about our traditions and pass it down to their kids.
Btw, there is a TV-show called "Allt för Sverige" (Great Swedish Adventure) based on a Norwegian TV-show called "Alt for Norge" (Great Norwegian Adventure) where Americans with Scandinavian heritage go back and get to learn about our cultures and their own ancestors. I really recommend it, both the Swedish and the Norwegian one, if you haven't seen it yet. You can find some episodes of it here on CZcams, if you can't find it elsewhere.
Jag har aldrig ätit prinskorv på midsommar heller.
JohnBlund94 nej bara till påsk och kanske till jul. Prinskorv kan man ju få när som helst.
@@Asa...S my mother was half Swedish. I moved away from her when I was 12 and now that I'm older, I am trying to relearn what I was raised with as a small child and pass it to my son's, because to me it is important. I'm going to check out what you mentioned.
Riktigt häftigt att följa ditt liv i Sverige!
That’s so fun! We have the same food in Lithuania!! I love Pickled herring!!
Yaay fan va kul med en sånhär video!!🙏🏻❤️
Jag vill se en kräftskive video.

Very entertaining vid! Moa is a natural in front of the camera! Bra!
I apologize for the audio in this video, but we were inspired to make this while our midsummer party was going on! Anyways it was really fun to try all the stuff, comment below with your favorite midsummer food! :)
I think it gave it a nice authentic feel:)
Haha okay good, it was definitely filmed in the middle of the madness, I had to cut out some parts where people where dancing outside and being loud by the door 😂
The (traditional) strawberry cake
Stefan Thyron svenska köttbullar! Cx
Linnea Mysterylee yeah! The strawberry cake too!
Wooow Stefan vilken bra video! Bra jobbat
I think the flowers under the pillow thing is that girls should pick 7 different kinds of flowers and as they sleep on them during the night they're supposed to dream about who they are going to marry. I'm not 100% sure though.
I don't think anyone is 100% sure what to do with those flowers. I don't even think the vikings were 100% sure. there's probably a story for each village.
What wasn't mentioned in this video but is a fun trivia is how successful this Holiday is. There is a massive spike in childbirth in Mars in Sweden.. As a festival of fertility where you dance around a giant penis symbol I'd say it's doing a pretty good job. :D
That's the myth, yeah. The caveat is that it must be wild flowers picked right before going to sleep.
Did it once, and ended up with the worst nightmare in my life. Maybe that's why I'm still single? Subconciously traumatized?
i think it is pick 7 diferent flowers and jump 7 fences.
@@LunarisArts I also did it once, ended up dreaming of Donald Duck so I wonder when fairy tales will come true so I can meet my husband to be...
@@johngranheim3134 The penis symbol part is a myth, there are no facts that say that is the real reason for the shape. Other versions are a christian cross that is decorated or just like that because it is easier to decorate with the wreaths.
I'm loving your videos, Stefan! I am a Florida School teacher but I grew up in the Pacific NW and attended college (UW - Go DAWGS!! woop-woop HUSKIES!!) where I met my very dear friend (of 30 years) who is Swedish. I am planning to teach Middle School Math/Science in Sweden this coming school year to finally experience Swedish culture first hand. I was born in Thailand, so perhaps I will drag here down there for the winter to defrost, LOL! I am growing with anticipation just watching all your great videos and had to say thank you!!
Trevlig midsommar Stefan!🌸
I love pickled herring and the herring in the sour cream sauce. I've eaten it all my life here in America and I also like caviar.
Yayyy I love your videos they are always so fun to watch especially as a swede
Very good video, I always enjoy them!☺️
Keep up the good work!🌸
The reason people originally danced around the pole was to fertalize the soil ( the ground ) so the next harvest would be as good as the previous year
I'm Swedish and i've been working every midsummer....I kinda forgot what it is, but it's good to see some people are still enjoying it. :P
Great job on the different foods you had to sample and tried at the Mid Summer get together w/ friends. The background party noise was great to hear and your host of the party was very enthusiastic to explain some of the different kinds of foods with different "Schnapps" (If I spelled it correctly?). Next time sing a few songs with your friends and drink one shot quickly after each song is sung. Njöt av att titta på video w/din värd för festen.
Kul att du hade en minnesvärd första midsommar i Sverige med din flickvän där.
Sill (pickled herring ) is the Swedish sushi, i love it ! . You should always eat it together with something else like potatoes since it has a somewhat sharp taste.
Du förtjänar mer subs! Fortsätt med videorna👍🏼
Looking forward to the next vids
This seems to be a good one! Dehär verkar vara en bra video!
Btw du är ju grymt duktig på svenska, du lär dig så sjukt snabbt❤️
My boyfriend and I will be moving from San Francisco to Malmö in August, and I’ve loved watching your videos!!! Super excited to celebrate Midsummer next year!
Welcome to malmö :) Skåne has a lot to offer
Malmö has something called Malmöfestivalen 10-17 august, it is a lot of activities :)
Thanks for the info! We haven't decided what part of the city we'll be in, so this is good to know :)
There is mostly a street in "Rosengård" (not the whole part) that is more violent, but more to their own "gangs" for an ordinary citizen it is not dangerous but you should as always be more careful at nights :) I would recommend visit Lund and also Ystad, and in the next summer I would recommend visit Åhus and buy icecream at "Ottos glass" it is really popular! You can easily take the train from Malmö to Copenhagen and have a blast at Tivoli and then take the train back, really easy! just say the word if you want to have more tips
Welcome to Sweden, for work or study?
When you downed the sill after the first shot, that's how you do it! Welcome to Sweden!
Bra video och hoppas du kan en fira en till nästa år!
I agree with you guys, sweden was unusually warm this summer. I love in sweden btw.
You should come over to Örebro... been in Sweden (and about) since '98 from CA.
bra video!
You're a cool guy Stefan! More Swedish than most Swedes are :) Your videos should be shown on Swedish TV to teach us how to enjoy our country more. Btw, you probably know by now, but if not; those small 'hot dogs' are actually called 'Prinskorv' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prinskorv
Take care,
Anders
Ahh okay good to know. And thanks that's a super nice compliment :)
Love the show.
Herring, potatoes and snaps (and surströmming) fits so well together, I love it!^^. Also, I recommend trying mead (mjöd) if you haven't already it's really good, honey-brewed wine. I prefer Valhalla mjöd because it tastes like mead is suppose to taste without berries. Also it's cheap.
Love from Sweden
Sounds like you're ready for the traditional sports of beer rounders (ölbrännboll)! Also, speaking of traditional Swedish holiday foods - julmust and påskmust!
Patrik Svensson kalasmust finns på sommaren med. Fast är nog bara Hammars som har den
Go to Kiruna or some other far north town. They have up to three (If memory serves) days straight where the sun never sets at all.
It starts to set but then turn right above the the horizon and goes back up again.
I really like that fläder one!
Kung!
Here is something you should arrange (and I think you would absolutely love in the Summer): Go "hiking" in the Stockholm Archipelago for a couple of nights, there are quite a few decent hostels ("vandrarhem" in Swedish) out there. Perhaps something for the next summer though.
Another trip you might wish to partake in is at Höga Kusten - they have an AMAZING hotel up there close to the Höga Kusten bridge, it could be a fun weekend project, and the landscape up there is breathtakingly amazing!
Per you were one step ahead of me with the Skärgård tip, I was just there for a few days. Can you go hiking though? We spent most of our time on the water haha
Hence "Hike" ;) perhaps a canoe trip or sail trip would be a better option, but you definitely should show that gorgeous nature as well as the awesome Höga Kusten area, would love to hear your opinions on those :) Anyway, glad you enjoyed!
Link to one video about Höga Kusten: czcams.com/video/RzwLreixn1U/video.html
One snaps ( or Nubbe as many call it ) that actually is really good is Hallands Fläder, it's an elder flower version. Also very popular for midsummer. And I really hope you drank the snaps cold, its horrible warm haha!
The last sill that tasted a little bit sweeter might have been matjes-sill, it's my favorite as well!
oh wow, your first midsummer in Sweden was one of the first ones I missed (I was in Japan during midsummer)
Jag gillar inte någon traditionell svensk mat, du behöver inte lära dig att äta det haha!, det finns även svenskar som inte tycker om det! Du är bäst Stefan
I think the spice you are looking for is "Allspice, also called pimenta,[a] Jamaica pimenta, or myrtle pepper" according to wikipedia. In swedish it's called kryddpeppar. Kinda funny when you drank the snaps, when we have midsummer parties it's either entirely filled or nothing ;), gotta get real drunk so you don't feel awkward singing stupid songs all night :D... Usually end up with a few beers and maybe 5-10 of those shots.
My first National Eve party in Sweden I didn’t know to ‘bite’ off the snaps and I was swilling it back as a shot each song. Needless to say I passed out pretty early on in the evening, after a while of having double vision. Lol, I learned my lesson before midsummer at least. I can’t keep up with Swedish drinking. 😂
I really love you videos... Btw, the tiny hotdogs isn't that the swedish prinskorv? =)
My midsomer plate is DROWNED with that gräddfil (sour cream) and gräslök (chives) and to mash the potatoes in the cream and cover it with the chives is my true image of swedish midsomer :-D
Also...after the food...later in the evening we always barbeque...yum yum... sausages, steaks, t-bones..
Stefan, the swedish herring spices usually include, cloves, allspice, bayleafe, white pepper, rosepepper, black peppers, sandelwood, mustardseeds, all depending on the type of pickeling. and it´s not that slimy :) just wait until christmas and do another special with the ham and ribs meatballs wieners, cabbage porridge and more!
Yeah always wondered about the midsummer weather situation...why does it ALWAYS rain on just that perticular day? Kinda is a part of the celebration I guess LOL. Great to see your reaction to our "strange" swedish traditions, pure entertainment! Thumbs up from Gothenburg
OMG she don't know why we have midsummer!? It's the summer solstice longest day off the year. It's a celebration where we worship the gods freja and frej :)
One thing you really should try when it comes to sill (for you English speakers, sill is herring that's basically pickled, I think is the right description) is matjesill. It's a very special kind of sill and the meat is more firm than your usual sill. And you're supposed to eat it together with gräddfil (sour milk) and gräslök (chive). So buy matjesill, and mix the chive with the sour milk and then eat it together. It's absolutely delicious. :D Especially with the small early potatoes.
Fresh potato with butter is a must
have you tried leverpastej?? If so how did you like it?
Leverpastej is super tasty,i eat
omg I had that exakt tabel outdoors when I was littel, like brooooo
I've been living in Sweden now for 8 years, originally im from Latvia and there we celebrate midsummer as well. Not too sure if Latvians got the idea from Sweden or not because we also have the tradition to have like flower crowns but for guys it usually only made out of different leaves, whilst the girl ones are usually either made only with flowers or have a lot of flowers in them.
I was thinking sill was pickled Herring! My mom ate it constantly.
Nice couple! U guys look really inluuuve! 😍😍😂😂 Luuuve in the air haha.. take care guys ! 👊🏽
Hahah my real girlfriend was too busy partying to be in the video ;)
Stefan Thyron whaaat !!! So that wasnt ur gf in the vid !?? 😂🙈 But U shared the fork with her that U had in ur mouth😱😱 That n all the flirtatious in the vid made me belive that U guys Were together!.. But fun vid anyway bro! 👊🏽Sry for being wrong but that dooh ! 😝Im half american mah self ! From Louisiana ! 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Really like your videos:)
You forgot the best meal in Midsummer and that is like a cake whif meatballs, bred, tomatos, salad and like kind of a sauce that you have and also some eggs and it’s sooooooo good😍Btw I am from Sweden and I live there🥰
Nice video 👍
Hej!
Hade hoppats på undertext för denna video. Det brukar komma automatisk engelsk undertext när du pratar i dina videor. Kanske det kommer senare? Jag är döv, därför vill jag ha text.
Btw, gillar dina videor annars!
Hej Camilla, kanske de kommer automatisk efter ett tag när CZcams analysera videon :)
Stefan Thyron Nu är det uppe! 👍
1:25 when they say casual look where his eyes went 😂
Try the "Matjessill" and "pickled onion Harring" with sourcream and chives, it does hell of a differensen.
Fan va charmig Moa är :^)
Varenda gång Moa ler så smälter hjärtat, typ.
Kryddpeppar (allspice) or nejlika (clove) perhaps those are spices of matjessill (classic sill flavour)? Also "Beska" (or Beskadroppar) is my favourit snaps, I actually like it! ;)
To make that sill, you mix (3part water, 2part sugar,1 part pickleing-vinegar) then you cut the sills and put them in that mix together with sliced red onions and some "Peppa spices".
16:40 Girls would pick 7 flowers from 7 fields and place them under their pillow, so when they went to sleep that night they'd dream of the man they were going to marry.
The sill u tried last looked like an onion sill :)
I love those. They are the only ones i eat :p
My swedish midsummer is, Go to some place and watch people dance around the pole whie i have some fika, then go home and chill lol
This Arabian Midsommer food looks yummy
Ingen midsommar utan kallrökt lax 😍 typ de o potatis som jag äter på midsommar med gräddfil och gräslök, supergott ☺️
I can't stand any of the store bought sill, just because of the slimy texture. But the ones my family makes is... ugh! it's the best! Wish I could teleport some for you to try sometime, haha.
It ain't easy being Swedish.
Not with food like that hahaha
Hang in there. Moa will turn you into a viking in no time. 😉
Yeah it is!
No not with all the refugees.
TheSwed3: Come on man. This isn't a channel for your racism.
Matjesill, sour cream sauce with chopped chives and boiled fresh potatoes with butter, is in my opinion necessary for midsummer.
I thought "Schnaps" was called "Nubbe" here in sweden !
Snoiz nubbe is the nickname for snaps! So it’s correct either way (y)
the small hotdogs is prinskorv in Swedish
In Sweden we always have the same food on all our holidays. Christmas, Easter, Midsummer and everybody have their own style to the food. Like for example the eggs. We have mayonnaise, shrimp and dill on it instead of caviar. Maybe it depends on where in Sweden you are :)
jag är också mer van vid majonnäs och räkor eller räksallad!
Majonäs, kaviar och en räka ska det vara *mums*
Dixi Wonderland I make my home in Sweden now. My husband is from Linköping. We don’t eat sill ever. Our midsommar meal consists of gravadlax (Homemade), cooked potatoes, deli roast beef, salads. Of course there is always something to toast with too. 😋❤️
Henrik Andersson Jag firar högtiderna med 4 olika svenska familjer då vi är en stor släkt. Låter mer som att du är väldigt trångsynt och fördomsfull.
@@MrHenrikAndersson lägg ner
I have a few problems with the explainations in this video. First of all: 'Sill' translates to 'herring'. Second: 'Besk' means bitter.
Third: The maypole is not a male organ and never has been. That's a complete myth!
Fourth: The picking of the flowers is traditionally for young girls. They pick 7 different flowers while climbing 7 fenses during total silence at sunset on midsummerseve. Then put them under the pillow. Then they will dream of their future husband.
Fifth: It's not called 'snaps', it's called 'nubbe'.
There were a few more things like the traditional clothes some wear, but I think you get the picture...
Hahaha, Surströmming will be a challenge for you. Fermented herring with a smell out of this world :) I love it tho, born and raised on it, can even find the smell tasty nowdays.
Considering I don't like regular herring I feel like that'll definitely be a challenge haha
I love you and youre videos du är bäst
Well, The kräftskiva is alot like the cajun crawdads and mudbugs festivals in south USA.
Looks like salmon roe on the egg. Super healthy!
Älskar sill👌🏼
that made me hungry!xD should have been small potato tho and some kind of sauce to it:)we always have steak and some spicy hotdogs and meatballs aswell:)
I love the swedish holiday food. Like Herring, poe-ta-toe, meatballs(grandmas meat balls, god dammit stop thinking about that), not the prince sausages(thee direct translation) or tiny hot dogs, da cured salmona, and the eggs with mayonnaise and caviar
You should drive to Halmstad because it's 23-30 degrees every day😊♥️
Helan går!!
Jireel in the background🙈🎶🎶
Don't know the exact origin of the flowercrown/midsommarkrans, but I'm pretty sure it came from the tradition for young maidens to "pick 7 diffrent flowers while crossing 7 gärdsgårdar/roundpole fences" and then put them under their pillows and sleeping on them during midsummer night - their dreams that night would reveal their husband to be.
My guess is that the flower crown/midsommarkrans has derived from that tradition for the girls to keep their flowers somewhere during the evening while they look for the rest of the 7 sorts. And they're pretty. =)
Yellow peasoup is probably the most traditioal and swedish of dishes. It's not festive, but I think it's ok and goes back to the midleages/darkages/midievaltimes if not longer)
Aldrig fint väder på midsommar typisk svensk sommar
If you have the opportunity I would strongly advise trying to visit medeltidsveckan at Gotland here in august. I think you would enjoy it
I used to hate sill, but I cut it in to tiny bits and drown it in the sour cream haha, so that's a tip :D
so it's not just me who keep catching potatoes and eggs when i try to fish in the ocean! :O
Jag var i Norrköping på scoutläger! Vet du vad Vidablick ligger?
❣️
If that last sill was Matjes the spices/herbs used is: Dill, cinamon, allspice, clove and sandal wood
I think that sounds exactly right! I actually enjoyed that one the most :)
Well, no shame in not liking sill. I'm Swedish and I can't stomach it, regardless of the spice. I also don't like eggs, or caviar and I have a hard time with eating just pure boiled potatoes. I'm like the worst swede concerning traditional foods.
Personally, I kind of like the Yellow peasoup,(I'm not a fan of the fish fixation that seems to find it's way into every festive tradition) it's a nice dish when you want some variation from whatever else you have been eating lately.. It's not festive food, but I guess you can spice it up a little, often peopel eat soem pancakes with jam(most commonly lingonberry I think) along with it.
I think its löksill (onion herring) which I believe is the most common. The colour seems a bit to light for it to be matjes I believe. If it is löksill then its made with onions, bay leaves, vinegar, suger, clove and black pepper. The recipes may vary though
Blixthand I'm swedish and I've loved sill since the first time I tried it (1 year old)
Tja dina vlogs är super bra
