- So premeds are always looking for the answer to this question and uploading their stats to various forums so we thought we would give our opinions on some applicants.
Please make sure to like, subscribe, and share the video! You guys are the best!
DISCLAIMER: Our comments here are obviously not the final say on these applicants and every admissions committee is going to look for their own type of candidates. But while students are on forums looking for thoughts from anyone we are just giving our take on these applicants. Being three medical students and being involved in the admissions process we definitely have something to add to the conversation that could be useful to applicants. Medical students by their second year are heavily involved in admitting incoming students often interviewing them and being involved throughout. Just want to get our bases covered so that we don't come off as this know it all final say on these applicants. This was just for fun and hopefully was informative! Thanks medbros!

I’m curious, you said it is important what sport the applicant was involved in? Why does that matter? Love the video!
Were you guys talking about all MED schools in US , DO programs & Caribbean MED schools or just the top Top schools in US?
Would you guys or have you guys done videos going over your med school applications?

This video is perfect! It kinda gives me an idea of I stand and what I need to improve on. Thank you guys. Please make more of these
Thank god you posted. I was watching a video on restoring an old fashioned stove oven thingy

I was the last applicant you reviewed lol. I’m a big fan of this channel & believe me I’m my own harshest critic. My personal statement does explain my shortcomings really well but I’m glad you guys believe someone will accept me 🙌🏽. I’m currently doing an internship and will do another poster presentation this summer along with taking 14 units each quarter to bring my sGPA to about a 3.5 if I need to apply next cycle.
Best of luck we're rooting for you!

Good video idea. I think it is quite an original idea too as I haven't seen it before and I watch a lot of medical school youtube channels.
This video was fun and rewatching it gets me in my nerves thinking like I'm applying all over again! lol

Woww your' so beautiful you look like kylie jenner
i agree! i already got accepted but was so nervous watching this lmao
I loveddddd this video! Really awesome to hear your perspectives you should do this again
Super fun to watch! Please do this again!!
For the DO applicant, I think what you should have suggested was for the student to pursue a post-bacc or SMP. I do believe that the student would not need to re-take his MCAT if he gets into a post-bacc or SMP for DO programs. If he/she is able to maintain a certain GPA in the SMP/grad program they will be able to matriculate in the following year's class or at the least will be granted an interview.
So in my experience unless the postbacc or masters program is well known or associated to the medical program you are interested in, it is not a huge improving factor on the application. The top things that matter are MCAT, undergrad GPA, 'you factor' whether it be personal statement, some amazing research project, etc. They can definitely go down the route you're suggesting, I just think if DO is the goal they can just retake the mcat and do some more productive things to add to their 'you' portion of their application and have fun before they go into medical school and sit for more school.
@@MedBros, I agree that there are definitely several options on the table. As a prospective DO applicant, I think each student should do their due diligence and apply broadly and be realistic about how they can enhance their applications. I think we can all agree that both MD and DO programs are becoming more and more competitive across the board. The reason why I brought up the post-bacc/masters programs are because that is exactly what I just completed. My program is linked to two different DO programs. In our program along with several other Masters programs the deal is basically that if you meet the metrics (GPA and MCAT) you're automatically guaranteed an interview. I think this is a feasible option for many who, frankly, performed poorly in undergrad and use it as a "second chance" to regroup and show that they can perform at a high level. Of course, you do not need to dish out a bunch of $$$ and break the bank in order to show an upward trend either, you can merely do this by completing a certificate program or a DIY post-bacc. Every student's journey and situation is unique and I think speaking with an advisor/doing your own research can help you gain insight on where you stand. Sorry for the long post, I just want to help out the community as well and be informative. I enjoy that you made this video because it allows for dialogue amongst the pre-med/med school community and only helps each of us who aspire to become physicians. Cheers and best wishes to everyone! Keep up the good work guys!
@@docsheth can I ask which postbacc program you are in that is linked to different DO programs? I am looking into some of those myself
A masters at a medical school is ALWAYS a great option if your science GPA is below a 3.0

THANK YOOOOU!
I know a guy that was waitlisted but got in with a 2.7 gpa and 495 mcat. Only one LOR and one research experience. Most of his other experience came from fraternity stuff this is why I say just apply quit asking what are my chances. Someone will take you folks crazy out here.
it is very hard to predict and there will always be outliers but looking at data we can definitely make some predictions. Just because statistically you might have a 90 percent chance of rejection, there is still that 10 that you might get in!
Harman is a straight up savage with his comments 💀😂
I honestly feel like you should review or share your feelings about the education system in terms of medical school in the UK! I would love to see your perspective of a entirely different study system! I am attending med school in September I am so excited and scared 😭. May god bless you guys with eternal happiness and success! ♥️
yay yay yay. so informative! I always wonder how accurate the advice on these forums is. medbros!
We getting rejected out here with 3.9+ gpas lmao...
Lakhdeep Singh that’s crazy!
Ya Canada is nuts!
In Canada it’s mostly about EC’s as a matter of fact the mcat is not even considered in some schools 🤷🏽♀️
Because EVERYONE and their mom has a 3.9 gpa get back in line and wait lol
PhantomLink doubt thats the case. But for sure much of the matriculates have 3.80+ GPA in Canada.
Yo this was great. Please do another one!!

We need a hastag name for when you guys do collabs.
When applying to med school are you supposed to tally up all of your total volunteer and research hours? Do total hours matter? Especially for something like research if you have publications and poster presentations to show for it, do you really need to keep a record of your total time spent conducting research? Great video btw!
Hello! I love your videos. Could you please do another would you get into medical school video. Thank you!
What major did you guys choose to increase your chances of getting in? And in what subject did you all do your research? And can we get an idea on what you guys' wrote for your personal statements?
Hi there. Just discovered your channel. From your video I kinda summarized that research is something more important than clinical research and specifically publications? What about non-traditional students, such as me? Is there no chance etc.
fantastic and helpful vid plz do a part 2
Executive order! Looking good people, good luck and happy 4th July
hey quick question !! What is more favorable on a Med School Application - a higher GPA (3.8 or 3.9) from a smaller, lower ranked University or a little lower GPA (3.6 or 3.7) from a larger, high ranked University? Assuming MCAT and EC’s are same
I know this is a little old but I thought I would put my 2 cents in. Something I’ve learned about research as a premed, is that it totally depends on where you apply. I noticed Harman was stressing pubs but from what I’ve seen from accepted students and extensive research, is that it matters more about the quality and passion you have for your research, because in reality progress in science is slow so it could take a while to get that pub. Also DO schools don’t require research and I know some MD schools don’t either but yes a majority MDs do stress research.
Hii! Thank you for the video!! Could you please do similar video for international applicants ?:)
I will watch this video next year when I already know which med school Im going to, and not a moment sooner 😂🤷🏽♀️
Do you guys think becoming an EMT will make you stand out as far as clinical experience?
The second one could make it into an HBCU, not sure that wasn't mentioned since he's URM...
Can Shaman (not sure if I spelled it right) please be on my interview committee? Such a nice guy
Also just wanted to say most matriuclants don't have ANY publications or posters but still get in. On the other hand, there are applicants who have multiple publications but still don't get in.
At the end of the day it comes down to a >3.5 GPA and a >509 MCAT. There will always be outliers of course.
I feel like you guys are reviewing this applications through the view point as if all these applicants are trying to get into top 10 medical schools... Applicant 2 can definitely get into a couple MD schools.
Rising PGY2 here . I just want to say this video is probably true for their institution. Every applicant is different. Every school is different. Great MCAT does not necessarily a great doctor make. If you really want it don’t give up! Good luck. (Also make sure you really want it bc residency is hard 👍🏽😅😂🥺)
I'm gonna have more than a 1000 hours research by the time I apply but 0 publications. The reason is I have my own project and most of my results have been disappointing. So it annoys me that anyone with research should have publications.
I know y’all are probably not going to see this, but I do have a few suggestions and the reason why I don’t like this video as much. I like the concept and intention, but honestly you really scared some people out here (even me) making it seem like you really can’t get into medical school at all with low stats and stuff. I understand you 3 have really good stats and are probably attending really good medical schools. But in reality you represent a small percentage of Med school applicants with really great stats and ECs.
There are people out there with really low stats who overcame their stats and still got into top medical schools. Just being involved in the admissions process and interviewing possible matriculants doesn’t now make you someone qualified to screen applications, cuz if you did, only 2% of people applying would get in. So the application is really not just GPA and MCAT it’s the persons story. The entire package. I really think if you’re going to make more videos like this, try to pick ones with low stats and maybe not say you wouldn’t admit them, but advice them on what they could do to improve their application and improve their chances of getting into medical school. Plus there are competitive schools that do reward reinvention of a bad Med applicant with like taking post baccs, retaking the MCAT, and getting more clinical experiences.
That being said, I do admire you guys a lot and I love watching your videos but please try not to be harsh when reviewing people’s apps just because you go to a top Med school. I would say ‘cocky’ but I don’t want to be mean or anything and please I’m not. This video just really discouraged me is all.
This scared me about getting into medical school and I was accepted and am heading into my second year. LOL.
I hope the student who applied to DO applies in Arkansas, they just got a new DO program.
whew this video would have given me MAJOR anxiety a year ago.
Greetings!
Question
I am a tetralingual student who started with community college and after three years in CC, transferring to UC Davis with Biology major. To be Honest I screw up on a few courses in the begining which lowerd my gpa but no an upwards trend can be seen in my grades. Moreover, I have been taking part in bio-chem research on polypeptide and diseases stuff, founder and x-president of a community awareness clun back in highschool, also was selected by high school to represent my school in a international conference working in global actions teams. What else do you think I should do which will help me getting into medical school? Most importantly, how much does it mattter that an appyting student spend his 4 years in university vs a student who started with CC and then a 4 years university? How much does the first two years of college matter towards medical school?
Since you guys are on summer vacation, would you mind looking over my Personal Statement with some ruthless constructive criticism?
Y’all forgot to mention post bacc programs to raise GPA’s and SMP’s. I know several people getting into schools after a year or so of Post bacc or SMP’s.
What would happen if that second-to-the-last applicant tanks his/her interview by coming across as robotic, etc?
Do you think a student with a stellar GPA and great volunteering, shadowing, and teaching assistant positions would be accepted to medical school despite not having research? The reason I am asking is because I feel strongly about doing activities that you truly enjoy, and sometimes, I think people feel pressured to engage in activities in fear of not getting in. Do you think not having any research would be looked down upon if the student is well rounded in other areas? Keep up the great work! Love your channel!
Do research. From what I’ve been looking at like 90% of medical students have done research. If you don’t do it you need something STELLAR like you lived in a 3rd world country for a year helping sick children, or you have a first author publication, or you wrote a best selling novel on science. Lol I’m serious... you’re making it hard on yourself by not doing research
check out my response to akhila's question about research in the comments here
@@MedBros thank you for your comment. I don't see the question by akhila in the comments
@@funsizedtwinkie here ya go: so it really depends. If you want to end up at UCSF or Stanford where research is CRITICAL then you need to have done a lot of research, be on multiple papers or be a primary author, know someone that does research there, get a letter from them, etc. If you want to go to a more clinical based school like many of the DO schools are then virtually none. Do people get into UCSF without research? Sure but their application definitely had something else going for them. Research doesn't even have to be this scary thing with multiple pubs, etc. There are many opportunities to get involved, as long as you're doing something to show for you should be in good shape. Exceptions being certain research-based programs I mentioned. We will do a video on research soon because it was always confusing for me trying to figure it all out as well.
@@MedBros Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! I've been confused about research because it seems like some opportunities involve undergrads helping collect data, and there isn't an opportunity to publish.
This video made me scared. I have no desire to got to any of the top 10 Med schools, but with how y'all indicated that those with top stats get brushed a side by lower level schools has me worried. Now I might have to apply to schools that I'm not interested in. (Most of the top schools are in states I have no desire to live in for 4 years).

love your username! and I know this topic makes people tense but like optimisticview said, don't let anyone discourage you! On this same channel I posted a video called 'what you give up for medical school' that is a different angle looking at a stressful situation. This is the hardest part because it depends on someone else seeing something in you rather than putting in your work. I hated the application process and I hate it now for residency so I know how you feel along with the many people commenting they are nervous but as long as you approach things with a cool head and put together a plan you're fine. I would definitely apply broadly regardless of top stats or less than stellar stats. YOU WILL BE A DOCTOR SOMEDAY!
How about a zoom meeting?! I have so many more questions I would love to ask.
Hey guys, quick question would training in Brazilian jui jitsu, soccer, and going to the gym on a regular basis be put as extracurriculars and if yes should they put combined or each one alone. Chelssums can you tell me which programs and where pls? Thank you!!
It was interesting to me that medical schools look down on reapplicants. Its quite the opposite for PA school. When you reapply they see that it’s something you’re not giving up on, as it’s very difficult to get accepted. It took me 5 years to get accepted and these are my stats.
3.6 GPA (I don’t remember my science GPA)
Over 10k direct patient care hours (CNA and pediatric MA) by the time of matriculation
50-100 shadowing hours (MD and PA)
8 months of volunteering at Mayo Clinic plus random volunteering throughout undergrad).
GRE was right above 300 which is like average for PA school applicants.
PA schools acceptance rates are usually about 2-5%. One of the schools I got accepted to (and it was a new school) had 2000 applicants for 20 seats (that’s 1% acceptance rate).
Can you guys talk more about research/publications aspect of application?
FYI that last applicant gets accepted to California schools all the time.
How do you become a competitive applicant or stand out?
I think that 3rd person has a solid chance for Cali schools especially being a latinx URM with service to that community
One of the application reviews was rude."Look at other career choices" ?? That was unnecessary.
What did you all do to distinguish yourselves and get into the Ivy's?
Thank you all for your content and straight up honesty. I'm a 28-year-old father of 2. Military, combat medic veteran. Would an application committee take children into consideration? Would having less "extra-curriculars" be understood in light of children had before and during pre-med?
Thank you for your dedication and service to the country first of all! Happy 4th of July! As for the admissions committees absolutely they would take that all into account. From just those few sentences I can tell you have a story to tell and that is exactly what the admissions committee would instantly zone in on. When looking at an interesting application with a great story the stats start to matter less and less. The situation with children may play less of a role than military service because unlike poverty, children for the most part is more of a choice rather than a circumstance but there can definitely be a story to tell nevertheless. I wish you the best with your application!
@@MedBros appreciate your quick response. Interesting point about the kids being a choice. Thank you
Should've said "choice" , just trying to be clear about what the admissions sees. Because this comes up a lot and I've definitely heard admissions completely disregard it or give it some points.
@@MedBros :) I wasn't offended. Honestly appreciate the perspective.
What extracurriculars do y’all recommend ???
What extra curricular do you recommend?
hey so I finished my freshman year of college with a 3.0 gpa. I had a 2.8 but I re took 2 classes I got a C in and made a ‘B’ in each one. is there a chance to bring my gpa up in these 2 years & get into medical school? thanks!
Absolutely there is. If you can bring it up to the 3.3-3.5 region you’re good. It’s also good because there’s an upward trend.
Does the area of research matter? (I.e research in sociology vs research in biology)
Yes
this was super interesting! but what about URM status? I've heard of multiple MD/DO schools that will consider those factors when reviewing an applicant with lower stats
What exactly would be a bigger picture theme for an application? I'm kind of confused on what theme would tie broader activities like research, volunteering, and clinical experience together.
Ambergur23 suppose you volunteered at a clinic that treated Alzheimer’s patients, you were an undergrad research assistant in a neuro science lab, and shadowed a neurologist. All of these activities have a common interest
@@gioacevedo5 Isn't that sort of tough to do as a pre-med? It's hard to get opportunities that all line up to one interest. I'm sure there's a way to link seemingly unrelated activities together in your narrative right? For example, volunteering with an inpatient pediatrics department and let's say working as a CNA in a nursing home. Would you be able to state that you show interest in caring for more vulnerable populations (kids and geriatrics) or is that not enough to cut it?
Are you doing a second one of these? And if so, can I send you my stats through email- I'm applying this cycle
yeah we are thinking of doing it and taking applications from subscribers and instagram followers! stay tuned
So if you have a decent stat (510s, s3.5+, +EC) Med school is pretty much just "just it a the wall and see what's sticks"
it honestly depends, getting into med school is a holistic approach . Depends on many things. Like they mentioned, the whole sotry about why you wanna become a doctor, having the same stats and doing the generic things that others do might not make the cut, but you can always show upward trends and etc
What do you think about Caribbean medical schools??
This is depressing. I am an incoming freshman who will attend UGA this fall. Do you have any advice for my freshman year that will help me stand out to med school admissions Committee?
yes we will do a video on how to stand out with your apps soon so stay tuned!
How many times should you take the MCAT from what you guys recommend?
Depends on a lot of things.
-what school you want to go to
-what your score was originally
-if you think you can improve it any
I pretty much agreed with all this
yall were so harsh it def makes me scared now
Honestly I thought they were incredibly positive, most of the voices you hear out there will tell anyone with a GPA
I am an applicant in Texas with similar stats to the first person. I know nothing is given but it is good to know I at least I have a shot...Thanks for doing this video. :)
@@moonrice555 LOL maybe that is why we have so many med schools.
(Just kidding)
don't believe the hype of some of these "applications." a lot of people embellish and get away with it. i think improvements in the verification process of applications must be made-- especially for the ECs section.
While this video is a great sneak peak into what admissions committees are looking for in applicants, I’d want viewers to not be discouraged by this. I wanted to point out that I have personally known applicants with gpas as low as 2.8-3.3 who did make it to medical school with post graduate degrees (both M.D and D.O programs).Despite multiple MCAT rewrites and admission attempts, they got in. Don’t ever give up and continue to improve your application. Also, medical students don’t get the final say in deciding who’s admitted or not (though they do have somewhat of an influence)- it’s better to take your chances and apply broadly.
Agreed!
“i could put together a poster and present it somewhere” 😂😂
Lol this had me mad 🤣🤣. I was like okay stop being cocky .🙄🙄🙄 🤣
The thing about medical school is there is no perfect application or nothing is specific. But what also needs to be considered is race. I know people that have shit scores and are career changers and have landed spots at decent places like NYU for example...one thing you need for sure is LUCK
My brother got into med school with a 3.5 GPA, 516 MCAT, and no research... I feel like that's pretty uncommon.
I mean that's a good MCAT score to balance his GPA. Other extracurriculars matter too so it's not that uncommon
I mean he might struggle to get into a top school but those stats are perfectly fine for lots of med schools
How much does research really matter? I noticed that most of these applicants have a decent amount of research, but I heard most matriculants don't have a lot of research. I have a little bit of research experience and was just wondering if having a ton of research hours is important for being a good applicant.
so it really depends. Just because this group got into med school does not mean their admissions advice is valid. Develop a strong relationship with your pre med advisor and seek feedback from med schools if you don’t get in. Med students, and even practicing physicians, don’t know all of what happens on admissions boards.

I have been telling the world for 50 years that medical care is a necessity, unlike the arts/humanities/entertainment,
and that we can therefore never have enough doctors & nurses and therefore nursing and medical schools should allow everyone in who wants in.
