I bought one of those AW&S knives from Twisted Assisted and I love it. As far as the Ettricks go, I think that is more of a problem with the pattern than the maker. Other patterns may be at greater risk of blade slap, the risk of proud tips seems to be the issue with Ettricks.
Not just Ettricks every Warncliffe from a lot of makers. That's why I think it's harsh to try and point the finger at A. Wright. I have a very expensive GEC, exactly the same. I was going to keep my nose out of it. But it was bothering me. Hash it out, and I'd feel better, I think. 👊
You know it was bothering me, mate. Im still torn. I like knife raven and dont want to upset him. All I'm trying to do is promote handmade cutlery. Keep the history and heritage. I didn't think it would be so bloody hard 😂. 👊

I've rewritten my first message. But I'm sure you read it. "Mudane" is not threatening someone's livelihood. When I did my video on RC. I never said don't buy them. I even went through the positives. It was measured, which I think we have a responsibility to do so. You said do not buy A. Wright, because you deemed them unsafe and could potentially take out an eye. I respect and like you. I have been watching you for years. I'm an engineer by trade, and I know how a knife is made. The biggest amount of strain that back spring goes through in its life is putting it into its initial position. That's when you find defects. That's why they are very rare. If they flew out like you said, we would have a lot of one-eyed cutlers. I have a knife with a cracked back spring. Queen railsplitter. Bought that way and for £25. They are rare but do happen. You said they happen on the close. I marked where the break is. It would need clearance (hand out of the way) to get inertia to go flying. Pretty much impossible to close a knife like that with heavy backspring. And like I said, I've been watching you for years. You close them similar to me. Backspring facing down. Not one hit the floor out of 6. One nearly hit you in the face. No one closes a knife with the backspring facing them. As part of my research into this, I called 8 sellers here in the UK to see how many knives they have had returned for backsprings breaking. Very little over a collective 150 odd years of dealing with A. Wright. A. Wright might be a niche thing in Canada, but here, a lot of people love and use them. I asked around, and no one came back with broken backsprings. First time I've spoken to Michael, the owner over this issue. He seems a really genuine nice bloke. Too busy in the workshop to watch youtube. But spoke very highly of you. And told me not to make a fuss.

You claim that knives don’t break in this way, which leads me to inquire as to what you are implying? Do you think that I purposely broke these knives? Or rather, that I was dishonest about how they broke? I understand your scepticism and I am aware there is no way for me to prove that the springs broke in the way I described, but I stated plainly in the video that I would stake my honour as a reviewer and as a person that I was telling the truth. I love Arthur Wright as a firm and would never use my influence in an attempt to damage their reputation. Making that video was hard for me. I didn’t want to say anything bad about a brand I loved, but I felt a duty to my audience to provide the facts. I don’t have much, but I intend to keep my integrity by remaining as truthful, honest and unbiased as possible. I would still gladly call you a friend, Martin. I enjoy your videos and I admire your dedication to traditional cutlery. I hope you can understand why I made that video and why I still stand by my decision. You know my instinct was initially to stand by you. I took it at face value as a lot of people did. I even emailed you in support. I appreciated your support on the RC video, may I add. But then I like to do research. Especially when dealing with something such as this. So I called suppliers (8) as I told you previously on an email. To get a better understanding of the issue. Being an engineer, I like to look into faults and how they happen also. The more I looked into this, the more I realised somethings not right. The Warncliffe video. I have a GEC UN-XLD worth £130 with exactly the same issue as your Ettricks. Am I going to do a video on GEC and tell them they have an issue with the design. Which is a coke bottle by the way. Or am going to file down the kick. You made out that was an A. Wright, issue. It's a Warncliffe blade shape issue. Not just my GEC but also many Warncliffes I have in collection suffer with this. You mentioned at the end of that video you had an Otter spearpoint with the same thing. But now everyone will think there is an issue with the Ettrick. Unfair mate in my eyes. If backsprings were breaking in the amount you have said. It would be an epidemic. They would be loads returned on a massive scale. I'm not saying they didn't break. But sometimes we need to think why and why so many with just one customer? A. Wright are a very small firm. I'll agree with you hard to get hold of. Because they are blue-collar workers. They spend most of the time in the workshop making the knives. Their profit margins are very small. Because they sell them at a very reasonable price. They are all genuinely nice people. You saw the interview of Ashley and Beth. They are trying to preserve traditional handmade historic cutlery. They are not salespeople. They do not have ambassadors. Even you have admitted it is strange. How so many have happened with yourself. I would want to exhaust that before I put out a video.

I offered my honest experience, I received honest feedback. I saw the mistakes I had made and understood how to prevent them in the future. The reason I was so focussed on the Ettricks was because they were my favourite knives. I spent video after video telling people to buy them. When I thought I’d found a possible “issue”, I felt it my duty to bring it to light. Again, I value transparency, even when it showcases my own ignorance. At least three other people have commented to tell me that they’ve had backsprings break on A. Wrights. This problem is not isolated to me. I never abuse my knives or put them through anything other than normal use. The breaks are as I described them. I still understand how you may feel sceptical, but I have said all I can say regarding this. You know very well I can’t prove that they broke in the way I described, as it’s not like I was able to capture any breaks on video! I don’t expect you to stop loving and championing A. Wrights. All I ask is that you take me at my word. Kind regards.
But your Ettrick video has been seen now by about 1k views. Not everyone reads the comments. You have not stated that really the issue is a Warncliffe blade issue. So it stands as is. People may never try the Ettrick pattern now due to watching that. So 3 people have come forward with broken backsprings. So that's 7 in total, including yours. You still have the majority. And I would imagine a lot of A. Wright owners, watch your videos. How many knives do you think they made over the years that your sample of broken backsprings took place. All I know is I would have liked to find a root cause before I made a video. Because there is one. I would have to tell people not to buy something if the fault did not lie with who I was pointing the finger at. But we are all different. Just my opinion. More now than ever, traditional cutlery is being eroded by machine processes. We have ambassadors for companies using youtube as a marketing tool. I thought me and you want to preserve these company's and the traditional way they are made? This felt like friendly fire. Again, just my opinion.
Congratulations to Graham another winner from Wales, I was saddened watching The Knife Ravens video I just hope Arthur Wright doesn't suffer to much from any bad publicity caused by video been released, I only have one Arthur Wright knife had it since the late 1980s one of the sharpest blades I own, if older knives weren't a problem then perhaps the steel used now not tempered the same, I am not taking sides but I think Arthur Wright should have got back to the knife Raven quickly and sent a few new knives to him as compensation and good PR. As you say Martin a shame no one defended Arthur Wright in the comments although I haven't gone back to see what comments are newer than the last time I checked, lastly huge congratulations to Martin and family on the news of baby on the way.😁😁

And when something seems off, it usually is. I've peeked behind the curtain of how youtube works now, and I don't like it, mate. I wish I could go back to being a watcher. And like I said, I've been watching you for years. You close them similar to me. Backspring facing down. Not one hit the floor out of 6. One nearly hit you in the face. No one closes a knife with the backspring facing them.
As part of my research into this, I called 8 sellers here in the UK to see how many knives they have had returned for backsprings breaking. Very little over a collective 150 odd years of dealing with A. Wright.
A. Wright might be a niche thing in Canada, but here, a lot of people love and use them. I asked around, and no one came back with broken backsprings.
First time I've spoken to Michael, the owner over this issue. He seems a really genuine nice bloke. Too busy in the workshop to watch youtube. But spoke very highly of you. And told me not to make a fuss.

Moving forward, I apologise for my use of the word “mundane”. I understand this is a serious situation, but saying I am “threatening someone’s livelihood” is unfair. As a reviewer, (albeit small) I am very aware of the weight of my words. I would never throw out accusations or attempt to slander anyone. My desire is to provide my viewers with an authentic account of my experiences regarding the knives I buy. If those experiences are positive, I will happily proclaim them as such. If the experiences are negative, I will still inform my viewers out of a desire to offer a transparent review.
I understand that you may have seen my approach as too critical, but given the situation, I wanted to ensure I wasn’t downplaying what I believe to be a serious flaw. I never said not to buy Arthur Wright, but rather that, as a reviewer, I could not recommend them in good conscience until the problem was fixed.
You said that honesty, facts and truth matter and I completely agree with you. As a reviewer, I view it as my duty to provide the facts as I have seen them. Nothing I said in that video was either; dishonest, an embellishment or a distortion of the facts. I spoke the truth and that is something I will stand by.
I understand that, as a knife enthusiast and an engineer, you may think my descriptions of the breaks seem unusual. Perhaps they are. I wouldn’t know, as the only instances of such a failure that I have witnessed resulted in exactly what I described-a break in the middle of the backspring whilst the knife is being closed. In every instance, the spring launched with a significant trajectory, thus prompting me to hypothesise about the possible connection this flaw may have with the overly tight actions. As I already said, each break happened much in the same way as the one before. I laid this out in my video description with greater clarity.
You claim that knives don’t break in this way, which leads me to inquire as to what you are implying? Do you think that I purposely broke these knives? Or rather, that I was dishonest about how they broke? I understand your scepticism and I am aware there is no way for me to prove that the springs broke in the way I described, but I stated plainly in the video that I would stake my honour as a reviewer and as a person that I was telling the truth.
I love Arthur Wright as a firm and would never use my influence in an attempt to damage their reputation. Making that video was hard for me. I didn’t want to say anything bad about a brand I loved, but I felt a duty to my audience to provide the facts. I don’t have much, but I intend to keep my integrity by remaining as truthful, honest and unbiased as possible.
I would still gladly call you a friend, Martin. I enjoy your videos and I admire your dedication to traditional cutlery. I hope you can understand why I made that video and why I still stand by my decision. I was perfectly happy to support you when you made the Rosecraft video-despite disagreeing with some of your points. I hope that we as a community can maintain the freedom to voice our honest opinions.

You know my instinct was initially to stand by you. I took it at face value as a lot of people did. I even emailed you in support. I appreciated your support on the RC video, may I add.
But then I like to do research. Especially when dealing with something such as this. So I called suppliers (8) as I told you previously on an email. To get a better understanding of the issue. Being an engineer, I like to look into faults and how they happen also. The more I looked into this, the more I realised somethings not right.
The Warncliffe video. I have a GEC UN-XLD worth £130 with exactly the same issue as your Ettricks. Am I going to do a video on GEC and tell them they have an issue with the design. Which is a coke bottle by the way. Or am going to file down the kick. You made out that was an A. Wright, issue. It's a Warncliffe blade shape issue. Not just my GEC but also many Warncliffes I have in collection suffer with this. You mentioned at the end of that video you had an Otter spearpoint with the same thing. But now everyone will think there is an issue with the Ettrick. Unfair mate in my eyes.
If backsprings were breaking in the amount you have said. It would be an epidemic. They would be loads returned on a massive scale. I'm not saying they didn't break. But sometimes we need to think why and why so many with just one customer?
A. Wright are a very small firm. I'll agree with you hard to get hold of. Because they are blue-collar workers. They spend most of the time in the workshop making the knives. Their profit margins are very small. Because they sell them at a very reasonable price. They are all genuinely nice people. You saw the interview of Ashley and Beth. They are trying to preserve traditional handmade historic cutlery. They are not salespeople. They do not have ambassadors.
Even you have admitted it is strange. How so many have happened with yourself. I would want to exhaust that before I put out a video.
@@SteelCityKnives When I released that video, many people commented to inform me that my “issue” with the Ettricks was largely my own fault. It was a learning opportunity for me. I offered my honest experience, I received honest feedback. I saw the mistakes I had made and understood how to prevent them in the future. The reason I was so focussed on the Ettricks was because they were my favourite knives. I spent video after video telling people to buy them. When I thought I’d found a possible “issue”, I felt it my duty to bring it to light. Again, I value transparency, even when it showcases my own ignorance.
At least three other people have commented to tell me that they’ve had backsprings break on A. Wrights. This problem is not isolated to me.
I never abuse my knives or put them through anything other than normal use. The breaks are as I described them.
I still understand how you may feel sceptical, but I have said all I can say regarding this. You know very well I can’t prove that they broke in the way I described, as it’s not like I was able to capture any breaks on video!
I don’t expect you to stop loving and championing A. Wrights. All I ask is that you take me at my word.

But your Ettrick video has been seen now by about 1k views. Not everyone reads the comments. You have not stated that really the issue is a Warncliffe blade issue. So it stands as is. People may never try the Ettrick pattern now due to watching that.
So 3 people have come forward with broken backsprings. So that's 7 in total, including yours. You still have the majority. And I would imagine a lot of A. Wright owners, watch your videos. How many knives do you think they made over the years that your sample of broken backsprings took place. All I know is I would have liked to find a root cause before I made a video. Because there is one. I would have to tell people not to buy something if the fault did not lie with who I was pointing the finger at.
But we are all different. Just my opinion.
More now than ever, traditional cutlery is being eroded by machine processes. We have ambassadors for companies using youtube as a marketing tool. I thought me and you want to preserve these company's and the traditional way they are made? This felt like friendly fire. Again, just my opinion.
Congratulations to Graham another winner from Wales, I was saddened watching The Knife Ravens video I just hope Arthur Wright doesn't suffer to much from any bad publicity caused by video been released, I only have one Arthur Wright knife had it since the late 1980s one of the sharpest blades I own, if older knives weren't a problem then perhaps the steel used now not tempered the same, I am not taking sides but I think Arthur Wright should have got back to the knife Raven quickly and sent a few new knives to him as compensation and good PR. As you say Martin a shame no one defended Arthur Wright in the comments although I haven't gone back to see what comments are newer than the last time I checked, lastly huge congratulations to Martin and family on the news of baby on the way.😁😁

I'm trying to fight the good fight. It's bloody hard, mate. Especially with my limited time. There are a lot of fights to fight. I've been told not to make a fuss of A. Wright, issue. But let's put it this way. When something is too good to be true, it usually is. And when something seems off, it usually is.
I've peeked behind the curtain of how youtube works now, and I don't like it, mate. I wish I could go back to being a watcher. And just collect my knives again.
