If you have not heard "Ashes to Ashes," which is a follow up to the story that he wrote 10 years later, it's a must. It is an amazing song, and the video is fantastic.
You could never really nail Bowie to a genre. He transcended all of it. He was jazz, rock, pop, funk, progressive, etc. He did collaborations with Queen and Bing Crosby. He was in Labyrinth. He did his own thing outside of the norm and it was all brilliant.
Don't forget folk and classical
And soul and electronic
that was his genre right there. "outside of the norm".
David Bowie is an amazing musician and even better live. Space Oddity is one of my favorite songs by him. Another one being "Ziggy Stardust" which you should react to next by him. Loved the reaction ❤

I had the amazing good fortune to see Bowie live in concert twice. He was the single most charismatic person I have ever seen live. I would put Peter Gabriel and Floor Jansen just behind Bowie. I would imagine that Freddie Mercury would be at the top, but sadly was never able to see him live.
I saw him 5 times.
1983, 1988 with Tin machine, 1990, 1996 und 2002.

I watched David Bowie perform this on The Midnight Special in 1973 when I was in high school. After that, I was hooked. I followed Bowie through every musical phase up until his death. I loved it all. His music was the soundtrack of my life.
David Bowie was such a genius and amazingly creative artist. I know it’s been said to death, but it’s the truth, words just can’t describe the beautiful gifts he left us.
I have a new respect for you with this reaction, thank you. Being 68 I grew up with David Bowie, going through space with him. 😁
In 1983I was crossing the street and got hit by a car, i was bed ridden for 3 years it was a rough part of my life, I owe David a lot he got me through the rough times and and pulled me out of the abyss i was in my mind. I have a deep love for the Man.
Although you can accept the surface reading as being about the story of Major Tom, Bowie's lyrics work on multiple levels and it can be viewed as an exploration of his personal feelings of alienation and isolation. I highly recommend watching the video to Ashes to Ashes next; it's not only the sequel to Space Oddity, but it remains the greatest music video of all time.

The video was made for a 2nd release of the song in the early 70's the song was originally released in 1969, the year of the moon landing.
This song is not about 'outerspace' it is about 'innerspace' the descent of a man into drug addiction - it makes so much more sense when you have this in mind...
I bought my first record in London in 1960 and first heard this, on its initial release in 1968. This video is 1972. That mellotron note is still my favourite note in any son of all time and comes from one of The "Big 3" (The other 2 being Keith Emerson and Jon Lord:All English) Greatest World Organ Players: Rick Wakeman, later of "YES" who was the session player and the ONLY person who mastered the new mellotron and he kept getting the £6 Recording Session Fee as he would not reveal the secret to the inquisitive Engineers at the time:).

Funny, I just watched a movie reactor watch ‘Labyrinth’ yesterday. Great songs, and Bowie was a perfect fit for the role of the Goblin King.

This is such a classic. I had this song on an 8 track in my car . I had quad speakers and the sound would just start at one speaker the wrap around you. It was very cool. Someone broke into my car and stole my 8 tracks. Well it was the only thing in my car. They left them all on the ground except this one. I was so bummed.

I think my spaceship knows which way to go is a desperate line and really makes the point of being out there without any hope of making it back. Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do hits differently the second time.
I'm 62 and I'm a fan of early Bowie, Ziggy Stardust, and Aladin Sane.
He was the most influential artist who set trends in music and fashion, a precursor of glam rock along with Marc Bolan.
A genius who after learning and working in the theater with Lindsay kemp, he starred in three important films, The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Longing and Merry Christmas Mr. Laurence in addition to Labyrinth.
If you are a Bowie fan, I suggest you check out, even if it's just for you, the concert at Hammersmth Odeon 1973, pure Ziggy who unexpectedly broke up the band Spiders of Mars in a speach just before masterfully performing Rock and Roll suicide, surprising everyone and the band.

Hi Rachel, this song is not abt space travel but about heroine addiction / overdosing.. It uses the space thing as a metaphore so your instinct abt it feeling sad and isolating was right.
Another famous song abt 'space" from that era is Rocket Man by Elton John, who was also battling addiction. Maybe an idea for a reaction?

The sequel to Space Oddity was Ashes To Ashes you cannot categorise The Thin White Duke. I love Jean Jeanie, Fame, all early Bowie right up to the 80's. Pink Floyd got Bowie singing live again after his heart attack in 2004. Watch Comfortably Numb with Bowie. Gilmour and Bowie were friends. I love Iman, Bowies wife for keeping him alive but not at his expenses, they were a powerhouse of a family.

You bet it's a sad song. Not only is it a song of isolation and apathy in the face of hopelessness, but as was revealed in the sequel song, "Ashes to Ashes",
"Space Oddity" actually uses its space travel motif as a metaphor for drug use. "We know Major Tom's a junkie. Strung out in heaven's high, hitting an all-time low".
It's also a darkly humorous song in the sense that it was written to cash in on the space race craze and the 1969 moon landing, but instead of reflecting the
unstoppable optimism of the era, it instead embraces the fatalistic notion of futility.

I agree about the sadness and melancholy of the song. If feel that the literal meaning could be that he is overwhelmed with depression when he looks back on our sad, blue planet. Soon after his communications shut down and his spaceship is hurling through space, as he says "tell my wife I love her very much, she knows." I always felt that it sounded like a suicide to me.
The thing that strikes me in the video is that he's playing an acoustic guitar. Such an interesting detail in a song with such space age sound.

First time I've seen you. Great song that came out when I was fourteen in 72 when I was a freshman in highschool. This was during the Apollo NASA program three years after we put man on the moon in 1969. Probably the biggest event in the 20th century. The whole world was tuned in for this event. Younger ones like yourself will never grasp how big this moment was.
Easily the biggest moment in televised history. Funny how time works, just three years later in 72 it was like yeah, we are going to the moon again, no big deal. Here in the US the biggest moments in our history at least in the tv age all happened in the sixties. The murder of JFK followed just three years later with The Beatles first appearence in the states on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9th, 1964.
The world of popular culture changed overnight, they were that important in history, greatest band ever, not even close. The murder of both Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King in 1968 rocked both our nation and the world. RFK would have beat Nixon that year which would means Watergate would have never happened and Ford giving Nixon a full pardon which opened the gates for the minority Republican party which got us to now with that no good fat SOB Trump and his MAGGOT party. Back to Bowie, I loved this guy in HS and then he kinda fell out when that disco craze BS hit in 75 or 76. In the eighties he exploded again with the advent of MTV in 1981 and the release of his "Lets Dance" Lp in 83. His videos were great, very talented guy. I didn't cry when he passed, you live long enough death just becomes part of the life cycle.
The only famous person who died that I ever cried over was when John Lennon was shot to death on December 8th, 1980.

What a tragedy for him to be taken from us in that violent act by a mentally deranged Beatles fan. To this day the biggest famous celebrity to be killed like this and was a wake up call for very famous musicians and security became the norm. John never believed in that, he stated "I'm always walking the streets in NY, if someone wants me dead they're gonna get me. If I'm on the street and some guy is on an upper floor of a high rise with a rifle, he's gonna get me". Sadly, for him and the world, if he had security that night walking into his home he probably wouldn't have been shot in the back three times at point blank range. George Harrison sadly passed in 2001 from cancer but I didn't cry. You knew it was coming. John and George were my favorite Beatles, sad.

i tried to listen to his album "Heathen" for years and never really got it. Then on one day it was in my car waiting in a parking lot and I truly heard the music and Heathen became one of my favorite of all time albums. I finally got it. Everything he did was on purpose and it is up to us to understand what that purpose is....

I'd love to see you react to more Bowie videos! I recommend his last masterpiece video, Lazarus, released just before he died. Bowie has such a visual presence it's hard to go wrong with any of his music videos. The only one I'd warn you about is the Heroes official video, which is compelling but cuts out way too much of the song. You should really watch some of his live performances too! (Btw he wrote all the songs in Labyrinth, no co-writer.)

Yeah, this seemed to come out around the time of the Apollo program. One would have thought that there would have been more of an emotional reaction to it all, but everybody was just gobsmacked and emotionally confused about that. This is one of only a couple of popular songs that are a reference to all that. Besides this and "Rocket Man", the only other piece of popular culture that seems to have processed it was the movie "Apollo 13", which came out decades later. In the 70s, kids considered it to be a drug reference, like a lot of other songs, but I think it's much easier to take at face value as being about stress, loneliness, and risk.

You've not seen the videos? You NEED to watch Ashes to Ashes next, The complete story of Major Tom is told in Space Oddity, Ashes to Ashes, Hallo Spaceboy, and Black Star. Spaceboy doesn't visually snow much on Tom, but we hear him being brought up, and the feeling of being burned out or tired, tied with the possibility of death, so the imagery flashing by might be his final thoughts, and Bowie walking by a wall, very similar to him as Tom in Ashes to Ashes, but much slower and labored, and finally his last visual mention in Black Star.
The 60s and 70s were an era of exploration in music. The industry was just beginning to pay attention. Now it's mostly corporations owning most of the music catalogues.
Remember that this song is from 1969, super innovative in its time

A little bit late, but if you want to watch another version of the same song (approved by Bowie himself), look for astronaut Chris Hadfield version recorded aboard the International Space Station, goes really well with the lyrics, when you watch him sing & play guitar without gravity, floating in the station.
