I think that Monica got caught up in a fantasy of any young girl. He was her prince charming and believed they would live happily ever after because of his lies. Linda Tripp was using her to feed her gossip demon and using her to fulfill her need to be included in life. She turned against her, but then, she also at least gave Monica the saving idea of keeping the dress. However, if she had not kept the dress, there would have been no mess in the first place..there would be no evidence. sad and very ugly situation.
